CAPT Louls H Hunfe recelv mg the Legion of Merit from RADM Henry S Kendall aboard the TRIPOLI The TRIPOLI prepares for one of her many anti-sub slrilzes during World War Two. In World War ll On the 25th of November, 1943, the USS TRIPOLI began the activities comprising her part in WW Il. She proceeded to Puget Sound, off the coast of Washington, for trial runs, firing tests and various other activities in an effort to ready herself for the big job ahead. During the Winter and Spring of 1944 the TRIPOLI operated in the Atlantic, providing air cover for convoys and conducting anti-sub offensive operations. Toward the end of the Spring season the ship headed for the North Atlantic Where she operated until the end of June. Following this North Atlantic duty the TRIPOLI reported to Norfolk, Va., for further orders. The mfg' continued her operations in the Atlantic until December of 1944 and then pro- ceeded through the Panama Canal for duty in the Pacific. She continued her anti-sub, offen- sive operations in the Pacific until the end of the war and was used as part of the 'cMagic- Carpet troop-returning fleet until she was put in mothballs.
