The class of 1949 has kept faith with those preceding Trinitonians who breathed life into that immortal spirit — the spirit of Tigerland. In their four years of life at Trinity, the class of ‘49 has carried high the torch of the Tigerland spirit along the road to the final goal — a college diploma. They have striven not only to uphold the principles of Trinity but to better them. Individual members of the class have taken a leading role in the academic and social aspects of the University. Those first few freshmen who arrived at the Trinity campus a few months after the end of World War II formed the nucleus of the class of ‘49. From the first, they were the ‘forty-niners,’ and thru the years, they have been neither Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors, but rather, ‘‘forty-niners.” And in them, both as a class and as individuals, we see reflected the spirit of the ‘49-ers of the Gold Rush Days. Therefore, we of the Mirage staff offer this book as tribute to the spirit of the ‘49-ers of Trinity University. ine a) eee ee ae 4 ¢ eRe a. et eens 1 (evi $2 2 2 i ‘ s . There is something about the associations of a college campus that sends the roots of friendship deep down into the soil of our lives. At times these relations may have seemed rather light and not very significant, but in reality, they have gone far deeper into your own personalities than you can now ap- preciate. Not all of your college associates have been equally acceptable to you or mean- ingful to your life. Someone has said: ‘It is one of the ironies of life that our intimates often provoke us more than our enemies.” ENR RSS SS REP OEE fe oe ve The purpose of Trinity University has been to blend properly spiritual appreciation, a sense of responsibility, and an acquisition of essential knowledge. The three should go - together and we trust have been purely woven in your own experience. We trust that iy you may relate yourselves now to the church in sincere loyalty and to all good causes LH that need your support. The world needs the best that you can give. ¥ We are proud of you and wish you the greatest success. MONROE G. Gathered from the four corners of the campus, the staff was composed of biology majors, educa- tion majors, P. After spending many weary hours in the library gathering ideas for the art theme, the art staff soon became authorities on the life of the Gold Rush ‘49ers. Looking back over the past year, | remember not the hard work but the laughs that we shared in putting out the ‘49 MIRAGE. For shall any of us ever forget those nights Searight sat up with the staff just to give us moral support, if nothing else? Or Pid with her “ruler eyes’’? Or Red who worked all night exclaiming every fiv e minutes that she was re- signing if the annual wrecked her health? Or Carol who slaved on a layout just to discover that, besides being a little cross-eyed, she had miscalculated 1 32 of an inch? Or Ralph who counted his new grey hairs every time we showed him the latest expenditures to add to the budget? Or Janie, C. E., and Frances who developed those “eye-level complexes’’? Or Ritchey, Barbe, and Emily who still look a little sick when some unknowing soul mentions the word “club” in their presence? Or Bill who is still wondering which Lever- mann made which touchdown in which game? Or that horrified look of the art staff when we asked them if one of the group would mind drawing up the WRA symbol again “cause we lost it, Raymond’’? Or those knowing glances we received from the engraver and the printer when we came in empty-handed on deadline day? Or Floyd and his immortal expression: - ‘cheese’? Or the many times we stayed up all night, ‘just to keep the coffee pot company’’? Yep, you've all developed an “annual complex” of some sort or the other, you've all worked hard, and you've all done a grand job. Thanks a million.
