Mr. Merrill has filled many roles since he and his family joined the T-P community 7 years ago. Among these are history teacher, Dunbar and Colonnade dorm master, Ass t. Dir. of Admissions, tennis coach, and Dir. of College Placement. With your ready wit and friendly smile, you have shown the wisdom, patience, and understanding embodied in a true educator. The long hours spent in helping us to work through history term papers, to develop skills on the tennis court, and to see us through the tedious process of college admissions have been greatly appreciated. It is with a great deal of admiration and pleasure that we dedicate this, the 38th volume of the TRINITANNUS, to you Mr. Merrill, our teacher and friend. 17 i 20 21 III! ■Ill IIII Peyton Pinkerton Dir. of Capital Fund George Mitchell Ass t. The highlights of the season included an opening victory against Hotchkiss, 7-0. It was the first time that TP had scored and beaten Hotchkiss for the team’s only four year player Mo Vaughn, who properly scored the game's only touchdown. The season closed when TP beat an undefeated Suffield squad, 7-6. It marked the second time in two years that T-P had beaten Suffield 7-6, both times on Eric Johnson extra points. The team struggled through the middle part of the season, only being outplayed by a strong Taft team. In the other games the opponents just scored more points on single, long plays because of let-downs in the better overall games. The strongest part of the T-P team was their ground attack that averaged over four yards a carry. The running backs: John Clasby, Mo Vaughn, and 5'5 Scott Matteson read the blocks of an injury ridden offensive line all year. The line had as many as three different starters for some positions, but made the best with what they had. An offensive line never gets the credit they deserve, but seniors MacCagnan, George Couch, Stew McKnelly, Bill Venable, Darren Fisher, and underclassman Brett Callahan, Tim Ferrier and Ken Love did outstanding jobs. The coaches Mr. George, Mr. Henry, and Mr. Coratti did terrific jobs and are slowly bringing T-P football the respect it deserves. 142 VARSITY FOOTBALL Front RowB. Lareau. M. MacCagnan, J. Clasby. S. There were only five players returning from last year's Varsity. Seven players moved up from the JV's and seven players from last year's Thirds squad! Though basically a young group, the team made great progress finishing with a remarkable 6-1 home record and had three shutouts at the end of the season, one against arch-rival Kent, but lost the final Canterbury game to drop below .500. Memorable moments would include the see-saw battle with Salisbury where we scored twice in the last minute and a half! The hard fought game with Taft that we lost on an indirect kick, and the Canterbury game where our own indirect kick was not allowed were two critical games. However, the three goal game” in practice remained the teams favorite. The four returning seniors. Tom Giroux, John Crandell, Chris Jansing, and Scott Craig rotated as co-captains during the season with Captain Liam Cuddy. Though John's broken leg in the kings-wood game ended a fine three year varsity career, John was selected to the All League Team and received the schools prestigious Annual Soccer Award. Tom Giroux, who replaced John at center half received honorable mention on the League Allstar Team. Chris gave us experience at the midfield and Scott battled his way to become the team’s starting goalie and received the Most Improved Player Award. Strong play by seniors Chris Blau and Gedney Webb at fullbacks, the aggressiveness of Mark Huggins at midfield and the spirited play of forwards Charlie Jackson and Scudder (woo-woo) Sinclair gave the team depth through the season while manager Grant Frautchi had his moments on the practice field. Mr. Reade and Mr. Wassarman have much to look forward to with eleven players returning led by Captains Tom Rossmassler and David Bolduc. We wish the 1986 team good luck to go with the fine talent they will have. 146 VARSITY SOCCER Front Row: S. Sinclair. M. Huggins. C. Jansing. J. Crandall. L. Cuddy. T. Giroux, C. Jackson. C. Blau. G. In anticipation, we waited for the next victory at Hopkins, but Gloria got there first. Illness struck a few of the team runners, but Westminster and Canterbury could not gain victory over the spirit of the TP X-C team. However, the epidemic escalated, as Berkshire, Kent and Hotchkiss slipped through our grasp. But then we discovered the RACING SNEAKER. Salisbury was beaten, Hopkins and Milbrook also were beaten. Kent's mud slowed us down, but Taft couldn't handle our wrath. Maury Smith, Trevor Brown and Mike Ellis led the first victory since 1967 against Taft. The Founders League prepared us for the miles of mud at the New Englands. Maury Smith and Trevor Brown led the way once again receiving an 8th and 9th place award out of 141 runners and contributed in the 3rd place victory out of 24 teams. Berkshire was among the beaten. Overall the team was well packed. Ian Boote made varsity as a freshman, Dave Rock made varsity captain and occasionally stepped down from V to pull the JV to sweeping victories. Jay Walker made 2nd varsity captain and though plagued by illness, was a vital runner for JV and occasionally V, Hamel was our underdog, Doug Milne learned tricks with the cue ball that he applied to X-C. Mike Ellis shrank his beer belly, Trevor Brown made the road trips a rapping ralphing good time and avoided the deadly tennis ball and Maury Smith did away with the mile warm-up and ran TP to victory with Trev on his heels. Though most of the team graduates this year; the past two years of success will hopefully bring in new potential runners to keep Cross Country going strong. CROSS COUNTRY Front Row: C Molella. D. The team was well coached as usual by Mr. Miles Hubbard whose insights and capabilities as a coach were slightly hampered by a rule change which restricted him to the bench. The team was led by senior Co-Captains Mo Vaughn and Ryan Pluinkett. Vaughn led the team in scoring and had several games of 25 or more points. Plunkett led the team in assists and steals while also running the team for the point and contributing in the scoring department as well. Three other seniors, Tony Marx, Eric Johnson, and Scott Craig all saw time and contributed greatly with Marx anchoring the team in the middle and on the boards. Juniors Pat Garrigan and Dave Mayeri started as well. Garri-gan was the team's best defensive player stopping several key opponents in big games. Mayeri started off slow but towards the latter part of the season shot well from the outside and loosened up the opposing defense. The team was rounded off by seniors Rob Hoffman and lain Wilson along with juniors Liam Cuddy and Bill Keating. Omar Robinson and Mark Mascotte both sophomores contributed solid minutes off the bench. The team had an 11-1 record in the league with big wins over Avon and Berkshire twice. 162 VARSITY BASKETBALL Kneeling: R. Plunkett, M. Vaughn. Standing: Mr Hubbard (Coach). L. Cuddy. I. Wilson. E. Mr. Reece's proverbial saying, We ll play with what we've got , certainly was the case this season. Thirteen players were gone from last year’s team, and only six seniors returned. These included Mark Buckley, Chad MacManus, Scott Matheson, John Storrar, and Co-Captains Bob Byrnes and Mark Cinotti. With few returning players and no postgraduates, the T-P squad was in sharp contrast to the league norm; however, the team's determination never faltered. The goaltending this season was superb, led by Mark Buckley who kept the team in most of their games. What continually haunted the team was its inability to put the puck in the net. The opportunities were certainly there, and, although the scoreboard didn’t indicate a T-P victory too often, the players and the coach had reason to be proud. Four games were lost by one goal, indicative of the many heartbreakers enroute to their 4-14-1 season. The players would like to thank Mr. Reece for his patience and hard work throughout the season. 166 VARSITY HOCKEY Seated: C. Resteghini. P. Collette. S. Matheson. J. Donohue. R. Byrnes. M. Buckley. With only four returning lettermen, Coach Coratti was somewhat skeptical about the potential to experience a winning season. However, with the leadership of Co-Captains Andy Slabaugh and Mark Huggins along with the strength of wrestlers Doug Milne and Stew McKnelly as well as the experience of wrestlers Joe Minniece and Tim LaVigne, the team managed to achieve some very respectable wins. All team members showed the desire, determination, and willingness to make self sacrifices for the team. The hard work of each wrestler paid off, and the T-P team was able to beat the big team showing the calliber and positive attitude of all team members. VARSITY WRESTLING Kneeling: E. Bodine. B. Dalbey as co-captains, the Varsity Ski Team placed fifth in Division I of the Berkshire Ski League, tied with Suffield. Seniors Brad Lareau, Ian MacPhail, Scott Lareau, Charlie Jackson, and Jim Tuttle also helped to beat Williston, Kingswood, Suffield, and Loomis at various times during the season. Due to injuries and illnesses, key racers missed many of the meets; therefore, the team lost at Butternut and Catamount to Berkshire, Choate, and Salisbury. At the Blair Invitationals, held at Hidden Valley, New Jersey, an inspired team defeated the defending champion, Salisbury, winning decisively for the first time in fifteen years in competition with Blair, Hill, and Lawrenceville, and eight other high school teams. At this race, Ernie Whit-beck placed first in the combined time for the slalom; Marcus Emerson placed second in the slalom, and Ian MacPhail placed fourth in the giant slalom. Coaches Live Cole, Rick Taylor and Joy Dubin worked hard to instill a winning attitude in the team and to improve their racing techniques. Seniors Jim Tuttle, Sandy Myers, and Maury Smith also made a significant contribution to the team. Marcus Emerson won the Skimeister Award. With Ernie Whitbeck and Scott Lareau returning along with many promising sophomores such as Drew Smith and Steve Hall, the team is anticipating a successful season next year. Willing 174 The 1986 Varsity Squash team compiled a strong 10-6 record with a team that was relatively inexperienced. The season was marked by a couple of exciting wins and several what if losses. What if we had not been missing three players from our lineup due to the flu, would we have beaten Westminster, Avon, and Taft, three of our greatest rivals? The victory over the West Point Plebes was the first win for squash in over ten years, and the close 3-4 loss to Choate showed that T-P can play with the best teams in New England. Many victories were easy wins. The team was led by senior Captain Avery Bourke who compiled an incredible 14-2 record. With his quickness and power, he played at the number two position. Erick Schiele culminated four years in the squash program by ending the year at the number three spot. Juniors Jake Willing, Ken Love, Alex Bard, and Drayton Heard filled out the middle of the ladder and all showed much improvement while gaining valuable match experience. Sophomore Barrette Seaton played number seven finishing with a strong 7-3 record while at the number one position. Freshman Josh Easdon took the league by surprise with his impressive 11-4 showing. Easdon, Bourke, and Schiele represented Trinity-Pawling at the Interscholastics held at Exeter finishing tenth of a field of twenty-six schools in New England. Guiding next year s squash team will be Co-Captains Jake Willing and Josh Easdon. JV SQUASH Kneeling: J. Kirchner, R. Tansill. A. Peoples. J. McCague. A. Leventhal. Standing: B. Seaton. W. Ludington.
