Dare to be different and follow your own star. And don't be afraid to be happy. Enjoy what is beautiful. Love with all your heart and soul. Believe that those you love, love you. Forget what you have done for your friends, and remember what they hate done for you. Disregard what the world owes you, and concentrate on what you owe the world. When you are faced with a decision, make that decision as wisely as possible — then forget it. The moment of absolute certainty never arrives. Above all, remember that God helps those who help themselves. Act as if every thing depended upon you and pray as if every thing depended upon God. —S.H. Payer- Live each day to the fullest. Norton Marvin Vince Bertha Ethel Matilda Wally Pete 131 Class History In September, 1978, a parade of cars came to T-P and dumped off 37 snivelling little monsters that was the freshman class. Although these were a minor bust the first day, we adjusted quickly to T-P life. Wally Danforth and Tom Wilkinson made Varsity teams all year. Wilkie and Al Garcia got along well in Col-louade. They had fun. Collouade South telephone scandal was our first unsuccessful attempt at beating the system. We set up Quads: room in the Quad, but it was the wrong room. Remember Phil Alexander? ... I didn't think so. In the spring C.K. dies by falling through the ice on the back pond to get rid of a problem. Also in the spring those of us who didn't hide quickly enough were thrown into the pond. The play a “Wizard of Oz, and the class of 82 supplied the munchkiuns. The Freshman were the main cheering attraction for the Varsity Hockey teams amazing 18-1-1 record. In September 1979, we returned. Although, during the summer, we lost a few of our fellow classmates, we managed to retain most of the original cast of characters. We also gained a slew of new kids. Johnson Hall, lair of the Overbeast, was Filled with newcomers. It was a radical hall. Richard Hale embarked on the ultimate trip. Dickson went on the rampage. Lee Turner went to Belgium with Allegaert’s tunes. The snowball wars against Cluett raged. The year was wild. We managed to survive to be juniors. The class of '82 returned to T-P in the fall of '80 with a feeling of anxiousness entering our junior year. Everyone looked forward to what was ahead, but also were nervous about the importance of the year. This was the year that everyone started to think seriously about college. The year started busily. A large amount of the returning class and some new students showed for early sports. The class started to take a more important role in Varsity Athletics. The junior class composed a majority of the athletics teams, Walley Danforth taking the reigns of the soccer team as a junior. Early sports went well and everyone looked forward to the season to come. At the end of early sports the rest of the students returned. Outward bound was conducted Sunday and by Monday everyone was into the swing of things. School had a week of school completed before the First occurred. Kessler, Wilkinson, Danforth, Marsh, Hobbs and King decided to leave the Emma Willard Dance for a R.P.I. frat party. The maintenance accepted graciously the help of these six volunteers to help work for a week. Throughout the sport season juniors excelled on their athletics teams. Phil Kessler by mid season had taken over as quarterback on the Football team. Wilkinson was being a menace to opposing team's running backs. Danforth was a strong player on the team. The Season did not end too well for some of the teams. Cross Country ended with a 6-8 record but Soccer had a 4-8-2 record and football a 1-6-1. During the fall students kept themselves busy with the academics and athletics at the school, but of course many extracurricular activities were on. Students participated in clubs. No one can forget the full contract hockey games that went on in the student lounge. More injuries were caused on that floor than on the athletic fields. Winter term was a time of hard work and achievements. It also was a time of high tempers and anxieties. Everyone had now settled into the life and school started to become a routine. Some members did well but by mid-winter our class had academics difficulties. Twenty-seven of our classmates were on academic probation at one time. 132 Winter sports went very well. Each team had a winning season except hockey. There were Five members of the class of ’82 on the hockey team. Spring sports went well. The baseball team did fairly well. The track team were .500, and the lacrosse team went an astounding 13-1, devastating opponents. A few incidents occurred during the spring term. Chris Anton decided to show Mr. Reade his artistic talent by painting Mr. Reade’s dog “Abigale”. Pete Muller, alias MPistol Pete , figured out that the game of lacrosse was played easier after a few bottles of Vodka. School started to wind to a close. At stepping up our class finally became seniors. We were now the leaders of the school. We said farewell to another graduating class, and many of our friends in the class of '81. We took our exams and left looking forward to the upcoming year. Finally, senior year started. Most everyone returned. We had lost a few and gained a few through the years. This was our graduation class now. We added some solid P-G's who added to all phases of the school. The class of '82 took leading roles in the sports program. Captains were: Chris Marsh, Tom Wilken-son, and Phil Kessler for football; Wallv Danforth for soccer and “Wild Bill” Beattie for cross-country. Football and cross-country were 5-5 coming back from a slow start. All three T-P teams finished their seasons with victories. Both soccer and cross country shut out their opponents. The football team won a hard fought battle. T-P had bussed the whole school to the soccer and football games. Also large T-P’s were painted on both fields. The night before Marsh, Danforth, Conners, Spendleg, and Meyer had snuck off campus with five gallons of paint and displayed their artistic abilities on the Cantabury playing fields. It didn't take long for our class to get into trouble again. Seventeen people, mostly football players, took a day leave to White Plains following the Hopkins football game. While in White Plains, the group indulged themselves with spirits of all types. The train ride back was rambunctious. When they returned to Pawling, they met ?n unhappy welcoming committee. In the dorms, seniors took charge. Well known to all freshmen were the punishments that the seniors in East were dishing out. Haggerty, Kessler, Gardner, and especially O'Conner with his infamous dead arm punches were notorious to all freshmen. “A fresh don’t mess with the best of West.” Winter sports went well. Captains were: Kevin Rogers for hockey, Dave Hobbs for wrestling, Terry Conners for basketball, Wally Danforth for squash, and Megan Holbrook for volleyball. All teams enjoyed good seasons. During January a flu hit the school confining half the students to their beds. Health was restored and the school finished out the term without anymore medical problems. Entering into the spring term everyone looked forward to good times and graduation. Some members of our class were accepted early decision, others crowded around their mailbox till April 15th waiting to see which college they would attend. Captains for Spring sports were Wally Danforth and Kevin Roger for baseball, Phil Kessler and Tom Wilkinson for lacrosse. Bob Frost for golf, and Chris Marsh for track. Graduation went off well. All students left the school with fond memories of friends and events. We all entered the summer looking forward to entering college to become the class of '86. We started realizing that after all is said and done, many of us will miss our days spent at T-P. 133 Senior Class Poll MOST POPULAR Hobbs Kessler Wilkinson QUIET 1ST Beattie Quaedvlieg Chapell KEEPS D.C. The 1981 season was definitely a rebirth for T-P Football. The previous year T-P had won only one game. The team with rising J.V. and third team players, two new coaches, a returning coach and a core of returning players, T-P was able to totally turn around and finish the year with a 5-3 record. Returning players were: Captains Marsh, Kessler, and Wil-kenson Seniors: Leek, Lineburger, Brown, Dauk, Martin and Gardner Juniors: Solomon. Rising players were Covington, Flynn. Byrne, Bottom, Couch, Allegaert, Inch, Waller and Dor-rite. New players were: Haggerty, Crane, O’Conner, Nelligan, and Roman. Highlights of the year were the Kent and Avon games. Traveling to Kent for T-P’s second game, the team knew that the last time T-P had beat Kent was ten years before. Through a balance of air and ground attack, T-P won a close and hard fought game. At home against Avon, after narrowly losing the first half 14-13, T-P came back outscoring Avon 3-1. The defense shutdown Avon’s highly talented All-American tailback. Always the underdog, often outsized, often behind, the players reached deep down inside to come back. The team’s courage, intensity, and dedication must be attributed to the conditioning stressed by the coaches and the leadership that they provided. The team had as Coach Henry said, “Mental fortitude.” All in all, a season to be proud of. 150 Varsity Football Season Record 5-3 Trinity-Pawling 19 Hotchkiss 34 Trinity-Pawling 19 Kent 14 Trinity-Pawling 14 Taft 28 Trinity-Pawling 38 Hopkins 13 Trinity-Pawling 20 Loomis 27 Trinity-Pawling 38 Avon 21 Trinity-Pawling 40 Kings wood 0 Trinity-Pawling 20 Canterbury 14 151 J. The team had eight returning lettermen: John Bissell, Veron Maver, Wally Danforth, Chris Anton, Dave Hobbs, Jon Lennard, Bob Frost, and Mark McKallor. Mark suffered a knee injury in the first scrimmage of the season and did not return for the rest of the season. The players had a couple of nice surprises, in terms of new players. Rich Graham and Joe Grusser were a potent ingredient in the players offense along with Dave Hobbs who scored half of the team's points. Other offense players were Skimmer Hellier and Andy Szamborski; Halfbacks were led by Captain Wally Danforth and Veron Meyer. Other halfbacks were Jon Lennard, Bob Frost, George Bamberger and Matt Ehrhard. The players defense was head senior Chris Anton and P.G. John Stevens; other defensemen were Pete Atkins, Joe Spendley, Joe Gold-wasser, and John Bissell. The defense was a big ingredient in victories over Milbrook, Wooster and Taft. But the highlight of the season was when the players went over to Canterbury to hand the Saints a 1-0 defeat. It was the first time that T-P had beaten Canterbury in soccer in the last five years. It was also Mr. Reade’s first victory over Canterbury. Even though the season was not a winning one, the team had a lot of character. W never gave up until the game whistle was blown, and all the frustrations of the season came out in a victory over Canterbury. The 1982 Seniors would like to thank and wish Mr. Reade the best of luck in the season to come. 154 Varsit Soccer Kneeling: Stephens, Spendle), Bissell, Hobbs, W. Danforth. Meyer, Anton. Atkins. This year's Cross Country Team was one of the strongest T.P. had in past years. This team was strong because they had developed their running skills and their attitude about running was of a positive manner. Also, this year's team had many more students participating in the program. This team also had many other contributing factors for its success compared to past years. The team had few talented returning lettermen such as Bill Beattie, Ken Kyle, William Wansley, also the team had many newcomers such as Doug Burke, Steve Lampher, Ted Mosle, Mike Kinnaly, and JD Ceagon that were far better runners compared to previous years. Finally, Mr. Sanborn and Mr. Krawiec worked together as a finely trained staff to develop the team's endurance, physical condition and mental toughness. The effort of the team showed because this year's record was the best in the last six years. Unfortunately, the team's record didn't show its full potential with a record of five wins and losses. They had lost three meets by a margin of one or two points. This was only a matter of seconds to acquire a win. Also, during those meets a few of our runners such as Steve Lanpher, and J. D. Cregan. Furthermore, those meets the team lost was because they did not use those runners in the meet. These two elements were combined together to give the team a few points. The team should have had a far better record because the team was much improved. Finally, the team was disheartened because the team's record did not show it’s extreme improvement, but next year’s team wi 160 Varsity Cross County Season Record 5-5 Trinity-Pawling 27 Hopkins 37 Trinity-Pawling 29 Berkshire 27 Trinity-Pawling 30 Kent 25 Trinity-Pawling 30 Hotchkiss 15 Trinity-Pawling 35 Salisbury 35 Trinity-Pawling 25 Gunnery 34 Trinity-Pawling 15 Cheshire 30 Trinity-Pawling 31 Cheshire 30 Trinity-Pawling 31 Taft 17 Trinity-Pawling 20 Millbrook 35 Trinity-Pawling 28 Canterbury 45 V -1jCh 165 167 Hockey Varsity Hockey Seated: Gray, Sausiille, V illa. The team had some very good newcomers including post-graduates Roger Hagger) and John Quinn, other seniors were Jeff Grey, Clark Martin and Jim Sausville. The new underclassmen were Joe Grusser, Ron Hill, Rick Case and Keven Kearns. The team was very successful at the Lawrence-Groton tournament finishing third with impressive wins over Moses Brown and North Yarmouth. After the Christmas break, the team began its league play with big wins over Taft, Choate, and Hotchkiss with losses to Kent. The team had one of the toughest schedules in history which included Princeton JV, RPIJV, and Union JV. Although the team lost all three games, they showed great talent and team spirit. Next year's team should be strong with defensemen Jon Leonard, Greg Murphv, Joe Grusser, and Ron Hill returning. Others will be Matt Khrhard, Rick Case, and Kevin Kearns. The Varsity Basketball Team had a very successful season despite numerous injuries. Although, T.P. placed last in the Hill Tournament during the Christmas Vacation they compiled a record of 13 wins and 6 losses. The year began with a good start, with wins to Hopkins Grammar and Gunnery, but then T.P. traveled to the Hill School and lost 3 straight tournament games, the first game being against the Hill School and lost by one point, but then T.P. bounced back and won 9 out of 11 league games thus finishing first in the league. The team consisted of eight seniors and three underclassmen, two of whom were returning starters. The starting five were seniors Terry Connors (capt.), Pete McGhee, Steve Lanpher, Greg Crane and junior Ray Casey. Coming off the bench were Tom Leek and Peter Dauk. The rest of the squad consisted of seniors YV illiam Peden, Roger Silverstien and juniors Mike McQuade and Dave Hamilton. Head Coach Miles Hubbard and Assistant Coaches Robin Curtiss and Jeff Sanborn were especially pleased with this years team, because of their outstanding hustle, which characterized them being the number one defensive team in the league. With one starter returning. T.P. hopes to continue the fine basketball tradition next year. 183 J.V. Basketball Kneeling: Nenman. Sapos. Shafer, Taylor. Tsairis. Standing: Kiernan. Hughes. McComas. The 1981-82 Varsity Squash team had an excellent record this year against other prep schools but lost to most of the very strong college teams played this season. Holding down the 1 spot all season was new comer J.D. Cregan who had only two losses all season both to college players. J.D. is currently ranked number eight in the country. This years team was also very fortunate to have Peter von Storch and Wally Danforth as co-captains holding down the number 2 and 3 spots on the team. They have a total of 7 years varsity experience at T-P. The team was backed strongly by Taylor Abbett, Brendan Smith, Burr McDermott and John Florence. Taylor, Burr and John will be the next years returning players. Recognized as one of the top prep school teams this year, T-Psquash latter succesfully against the prep school opponents with notable wins against Kent, Taft, and Brunswick. The team lost to a powerful Milton squad early in the season and lost to Choate but otherwise dominated their foes. This has been the strongest squash team in T-P’s history and as Coach Reade added “... this has been the best team I’ve coached in terms of attitude, hardwork and most of all the enjoyment of the game. This sets a good standard for future teams.” 186 VARSITY SQUASH Record 10-7 Trinity Pawling 4 Brunswick 3 Trinity Pawling 7 Providence Country Day 0 Trinity Pawling 2 Milton 5 Trinity Pawling 1 Harvard 7 Trinity Pawling 7 Brooklyn P.P. 0 Trinity Pawling 2 West Point 7 Trinity Pawling 5 Kent 2 Trinity Pawling 4 Vassar 3 Trinity Pawling 4 Taft 3 Trinity Pawling 1 Choate 6 Trinity Pawling 7 Canterbury 0 Trinity Pawling 3 Williams 4 Trinity Pawling 7 Canterbury 0 Trinity Pawling 3 Kent 4 Trinity Pawling 7 Brooklyn P.P. 0 Trinity Pawling 2 Trinity College 5 Trinity Pawling 5 Brunswick 2 J.V. Finishing with an impressive 9-4 record, the highlights of the season were exciting victories over two teams, Hotchkiss and Avon, which had previously never had been beaten by Trinity Pawling Wrestling team. Two wrestlers, Bayard Clark at 155 and Tom W ilkinson at unlimited, finished the season with undefeated records heading into the state tournament at Taft. Varsity Skiing Standing: Von Storch, lx. Cooper, Buike, Hellier, Flynn, De Paola, Coach Cole. This years Varsity Ski Team had a overall disappointing record, but had great team spirit. Mr. Cole put in a lot of time and effort, not only on the mountain, but off the mountain as well, by getting the team in shape. The team itself put in a lot of time in practice, and was a much improved team over the last years team. The highlights of the teams season was a second place finish, against a line up of strong teams including Gunnery, Hall School, Marvelwood and Foreman. The top racers in that meet were John Cooper, captain, Curtiss Flynn and Skimmer Hellier. Although the team did not have an outstanding season, the team kept up a steady finish in each meet, never finishing lower than third place. The success to the teams improvement must be credited to Mr. Cole. The team should be very strong next year, since all of the members of the team are returning. They are Curtiss Flynn, Doug Burke, Rob lx, Jeff De Paola, Skimmer Hellier and John Cooper. 190 J.v Skiing Standing: Krause, Osborne, Roberts, Gallagher, Siemon, Cragin. It was the first victory ever in T-P history against Hotchkiss. The hardest game was against Wooster. The teams were tied at two games a piece, until Wooster broke loose and won 3-2. The Blazers had a couple of nice surprises. Newcomer, Susan Ford crushed opponents with her lighting serve. The other members of the feared offense were Collette Dumont, Fllen Daubenmire, Natalie deHoff, and Noelle Rogers.
