s ...sci .www-ws-v isa One momentous event of the year to seniors was their eighteenth birthday. lt brought mixed feelings for 61-82 seniors because of a new law effective September 1, 1981 that prohibited the sale of liquor to anyone under nine- teen. This caused many controversies across Trinity's campus as students ex- pressed their point of view on the un- fairness or benefits of the law. Plans of partying legally on one's eighteenth birthday were out of focus as seniors could expect to be minors for their last year of high school. The most common argument against the liquor law was one that John Alcedo used. When you're seventeen you can be put in jail and when you're eighteen you have to register for the draft, but you can't drink until you're nineteen. His belief echoed through the senior class as seniors voiced their opinions over and over on the repressed feeling the law produced. Dana Suhr spoke for numerous students when she protested that When you're eighteen, you're in- ,pu- S ,, vw! dependent enough to decide for yourself whether you should be able to drink. Others, Sharla Roach for one, felt exactly the opposite. Her idea on the drinking law was that lt's fine because most eighteen year olds don't have enough sense to decide for themselves whether they should drink. Another viewpoint similar to this, except with even stronger terms, was related by Joe Lovelady. I think they should raise it to twenty-one! proposed Joe as he affirmed the advantages of the age limit. Whether students were for or against the law, most agreed on one point. They changed the law to keep liquor out of high school: if you want to drink you're gonna find a way to get it. claimed Steve King and many others. So, while the drinking law was ob- viously something Trinity's seniors could not change, it was still a major issue that let seniors freely practice a favorite pastime: relating their point of viewl Opposite page above left: Dana Suhr enjoys relatlng her polnt of view.
