The 1981-62 school year was filled with many unprecedented events. These ranged from royal extravagan- zas to new outbreaks of war. The year's activities affected the life of each Trinity student. Before the students even arrived for the first day of school, they had already observed the most elegant event of the year: the wedding of England's heir to the royal throne, Prince Charles, to Lady Diana Spencer. Within several months of this fairy tale wedding, Buckingham Palace announced the pregnancy of the new Princess of Wales. Economics also played a large part in the year's events. The year began with President Reagan's proposed 13 billion dollar spending cut. While using this as an attempt to balance the budget, Reagan also proposed to build the B-1 bomber and place MX missiles in hardened, existing missile silos. Follow- ing this decision, new negotiations between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. began in Geneva over the reduction of medium range nuclear forces in Europe. These negotiations faced a major set- back when Wojcielch Jaruzelski, the Polish Prime Minister, imposed military rule in Poland to counteract the growth of the labor union Solidarity. As a result of the Communist rule, economic sanc- tions were enacted against Poland and the U.S.S.R. in retaliation towards their intervention. Other world events this year included the U.S. Space Shuttle and its several flights plagued by technical and at- mospherical complications. Despite these difficulties much useful informa- tion was learned, especially for future flights. Soon after the March Space Shut- tle flight, a new crisis arose which may have been the most influential of the year. The Faulkland Islands dispute brought the reality of war and the draft closer to the U.S. Argentine citizens and THS students, Walter and George Puricelli, especailly felt the confronta- tion in the extreme South Atlantic. Closer to home the closing of school also found the closing of Braniff Airlines, forcing some out of school students to compete for jobs with out of work parents. The year's end saw no real hope in the near future for the airline's reopening. ln the year that Walter Cronkite retired, that's the way it was. Opposite page above left.
