Quotes: Denise Theder: Oh Man! Eddie Van Halen is so good-lookin'! Scott Ferguson: Roth had an incredi- ble stage performance that radiated out into the audience. You could feel the excitement! Jimmy Hall: The Van Halen concert was excellent! Van Halen really knows how to rock and how to get the au- dience into the show! Quotes: Bridgette Hixon: l'Jaurney put on a really terrific concert, the way Steve Perry ran all over the stage made it even more exciting. l really enjoyed it. Kathy Thompson: I thought the con- cert was excellent. Steve Perry created an excited tension among the crowd, and, combined with the music and songs, made the concert the best, in my opinion. Triune Van Halen has to be one of the most zany groups on stage. With Reu- nion Arena sold out, their show was a complete success. Van HaIen's show was on September 10th, with David Lee Roth as wild as ever. For those who had witnessed Van Halen before, the show followed the usual guide lines. Roth, with his handy bottle of Jack pro- ceeded on with the concert. Although the drums and guitars were at peak. Roth's words seemed to become jumbl- ed as the show came closer to an end. Even through all of this, the fans were full of vivacity and cheer. The show was a success, selling multitudes of hats, T- shirts, and of course those pins that ap- peared on everyone's letterjackets. Another one of America's number one rock bands reached Dallas on November 7th and 8th. After the release of their live CAPTURED album, their success rose. No one realized, however, that something like ESCAPE would follow, to bring Journey's success to a peak. With many number one hits on the ablum, Journey arrived in con- cert with all of their rock tunes as well as the mellow tunes that brought on their great success. Of the two shows presented, the first was a complete sellout. The second show was so close to a sellout that only obstructed view seats remained. A com- plete variety of music was witnessed, as each member of the band pleased the audience with a solo of each instru- ment. As a different addition, a new member of the band, Jonathan Cain, performed a piano solo that entranced the audience. Appearing as a warmup for Journey was none other than Lover-boy, whose performance was also superb. Although many think of Journey as a mellow band, this is not completely so. Steve Perry, with his amazing and uni- que voice, rocked the audience throughout the show. The band proved itself superior as they finished up the concert with an amazing presentation. Each member of the band was introduc- ed on a huge screen and captioned with their own credits. Finally, the ESCAPE cover design was flashed on the screen as the show came to a fulfilling close.

There are two holidays formally acknowledged by the THS students, Christmas and Valentine's Day. Many ac- tivities were planned for these special occasions. The Christmas spirit of caring and giving was created in a variety of ways. For one, the Student Council held a party for the less fortunate children of the area. The Christmas cards that were sent to student's second or third period classes were another big success. The faculty also par- ticipated in the exultant season by decorating classrooms and supplying a colorful tree in the Administration Office which enlightened seasonal spirits. Another holiday the students enjoyed was Valentine's Day. Sing-o-grams and kiss-o-grams were provided by the Student Council and carnations by the Senior Class. Students could send a humorous, mushy, or sarcastic sing-o-gram to anyone. Sending a carnation to someone special as a secret admirer developed the loving mood of Valentine's Day. The holidays and activities were enjoyed by both the students and the faculty. They provided a diversion to the regular hassles of the day. 'JIYJJ ID' Announced on the radio one fall day was news that caused an uproar The Rolling Stones will be here in Dallas on October 31st and November 1st. People from all around started scraping money together to acquire tickets for this earth shaking event. As the date for ticket sales grew nearer, the anxiety was reaching a peak. The day to purchase tickets arrived and the popularity of the Stones was evident as they sold out the Cotton Bowl within one day. As if this wasn't enough for Mick and his crew, a date for yet another show arose. Just as with the first, this world renowned group sold out the Cotton Bowl for a second time. lt was clearly stated on the tickets that the show was to go on. It quoted, opening 12:00 noon - RAIN OR 1-1'QN BOWL ' vacuo, uns X .5 g 1 - -uw.. -f1jg.','1 ' , 1 - L -Nov, t... r, tm. ,-. .ti , .L Z lzuiurrs stones gig N I A :un nu-1l 0- Z k V 1 si1.sn l A 1981 lM ff.l1..,.......... . The weather conditions were not to slow the crowd, as the Cotton Bowl was packed. Although the show began at 12 noon with two warm up bands, the show proceeded hours on into the darkness. Many spectators spent 12 to 16 hours at the Cotton Bowl for this once-in-a-lifetime show. As expected the Stones concerts were extremely successful. The promo- tional items, T-shirts, pins, and hots were obvious in student attire during the days following the shows. All in all the Rolling Stones appearance in this area was definitely the high point in the year's concert agenda. Does Te as Really Have the Best Rock? Quotes: Jim Stubblefield: Mick and the boys were showing their age, but the sheer excitement of seeing the Stones live made it more than a memorable occasion. Randy Davis: lt was the best concert feasibly possible, idue to the weatherj to see an institution like the Rolling Stones. Organizations and Activities 2 9
