Sports. Pictures flash instantly through the mind. Racers take their mark, get set, then bang! Shots go off in the air - legs stretching for the finish line. Crowds cheering as their football team scores the winning touchdown for their alma mater. Basketball players dash down the court - air filled with emotion - fans shouting their support. Swimmers gasping for air - lungs bursting as they make a final attempt to be first in the race. The cracking of a bat sounds off- a baseball soars far in the outfield - another homerun scored. Amid all this excitement, one realizes how sports plays an important role in everyone's life- including that of the students at Trinity High School. Early school days saw little or no kind of physical fitness programs for students. People failed to realize the importance of physical fitness in its ability to help the student be more alert, agile and quick. School days were quite monotonous until the late 1800's, when such universities as Yale began to understand the value of physical deve opment. However, physical education programs as they are known today were not in existence until after World War 1, when it was learned that more than half of the nation's young men were hysically unfit for combat service. Due to this disclosure, state laws were soon passed that required schools to teach physical education. Therefore, it is through individual state's efforts that physical education has advanced to its present day form. Organized sports of today are the results of yesterday's physical fitness programs. Organized sports: better known as athletics, offer such activities as football, basketball, baseball, swimmin , gymnastics, tennis, golf, track, and volleybai to all students interested in physical fitness. These sports are all designed to teach a student to be quicker, more agile and alert. They also teach students how to co- operate with each other and to strive to be best in what they can do. Although sports have been offered in high schools for the past thirty years, boys have been the main ones to participate in them. Girls did not take such an active role in sports because it was not considered ladylike to do so. All that has changed, however, in just the past ten years. With the coming of Women's Equal Rights, the sports world has seen a drastic change. Girls have come out more and more each year to participate in all major sports such as football, track, softball, etc. Due to a Supreme Court ruling several years ago, it was held that girls could either play in the same league as boys, or start their own girI's league. As a result, many high schools throughout the U.S. are sponsoring girl's leagues. There has been much change in the field of sports since physical fitness programs were first developed in the late 1800's. It can be assumed then, that we will continue to change in the years to come.
