The Riches of the English Tongue The story of the English language begins about 15 hundred years ago with Hengist and Horso, warriors from Germany who came to Britain, bringing the English lan- guage with them. They came to fight for Britain's king, Vortigern, against the Picts, But when the Germanic soldiers—Angles, Saxons, and Jutes—saw what good land Britain was and how weak the country was, they began to fight against Vortigern to take the land for themselves.
