ROCKS EMERGE VICTORIOUSIN CLASHE WITH OUT-OF-TOW FOE 1 The 1969 Irish football schedule was by no means a pushover. Besides facing its city rivals, the Rocks were pitted against two Ohioan powerhouses, Steubenville and Hamilton Garfield, and the Kentucky AA champ of the previous year, Fort Thomas Highlands. After a 700-mile trek deep into Buckeye territory, Trinity opened its season with a convincing 21-8 trouncing of the Big Red at Steubenville. After tallying first on a 5-yard scamper by Rick Han- cock, the Irish rambled to a 15-8 halftime advantage as Pierce con- nected with end Frank Mudd on a 15-yard scoring pass. Midway through the third period, Pierce sewed up the victory with a 5-yard run for a marker. While the Rocks racked up a commanding 306- 236 lead in total offense, the secondary corp blunted Steubenville 's aerial attack by picking off three interceptions. Journeying to Fort Thomas Highlands, Trinity amassed an over- whelming first half statistical advantage - 9-1 in first downs, 232- 22 in total offense - and glided to a 20-7 demolition of the Bluebirds Directing this massive outburst, quarterback Pierce romped for 164 yards and two touchdowns - one a 61-yard jaunt on the game's first ity lead to 13-0 with an 8-yard tally. After that, the Irish were never headed as their defense rigidly contained the heralded High- lands offensive attack. At Waggener Field for their Homecoming Game, the Rocks flexed their muscles for the hometown fans and tumbled to a 33-18 victory over beefy Hamilton Garfield.
