ROCK FLEX MU CLE EARLK CRU H CENTRAL AND DE ALE Against their first league opposition of the season, the Shamrocks buried punchless Central and DeSales 42-12 and 31-0 respectively in a massive display of offensive firepower. At home again after a successful 700 mile trek to Steubenville, Ohio, Trinity pounded out 412 yards and 6 touchdowns for the hometown fans against a lack-luster Central team. Lead- ing only 7-6 with six minutes left in the first half, quarterback Joe Pierce finally broke the ice with a 21-yard scoring play on a screen pass to fullback Joe Kirchner . From there the Irish galloped-to a 21-6 halftime lead and the only thing left in doubt was the size of the winning margin. With their offense piling up 382 yards and their defense sporting a shutout effort, the fighting Irish methodically demolished a hap- less DeSales team at Atherton field. The Rock defense limited the Colts to 103 total yards and 4 first downs while rigidly containing the high- ly regarded Colt pass combination of quartet- back Scotty Buckingham and end Steve Green. The stingy Shamrock secondary permitted Buck- ingham only 2 completions in 13 attempts while snagging three interceptions. ftop, lefty Senior End Frank Mudd, seen here hauling in a 24-yard pass from Pierce against DeSales, had teamed up earlier with quarter- back Pierce on a 8-yard scoring strike for the game's first touchdown en route to a 31-0 whitewashing of the Colts. Against Central, Mudd had two receptions for 24 yards and tal- lied 2 two-point conversions on passes from Pierce. fleftj Fullback Joe Kirchner bulled his way for 44 yards and two touchdowns, one a 21-yard score on a screen pass from Pierce, in the Rocks' 42-12 triumph over the Central Yel- lowjackets. In the DeSales game, Kirchner capped a 53-yard Irish drive with a 2-yard scoring plunge for a 12-0 Trinity lead. He finished thenight with 36 yards in 8 carries. 45
