IRISH FALL SHORT IN RID FOR TITLE REP AT Unknown in quantity and quality, was the preseason appraisal by Coach Kennedy of his 1969 squad. We won 't be a contender, and might wind up fourth or fifth in the city. Noted for his conservative estimates, Coach Ken- nedy's remarks nevertheless reflected the uncertain atmos- phere which greeted the arrival of a new football season at Trinity. Practically overlooked in the preseason polls, the Rocks had only six regulars returning from the state champion combination of the previous year. Shuffling of the assistant coaching staff had resulted in the holdover of only John Sul- livan, defensive line coach. Then in a surprise move that puzzled many followers, senior Dennis Scully, generally regarded as one of the finest quarterbacks in the league, was converted to tailback in favor of junior upstart Joe Pierce. The Irish remained a question mark even as they marched off to Steubenville, Ohio, to do battle with the powerful Big Red in their opening game. However, any doubts were dispelled as the Irishlcon- vincingly crushed Steubenville High 21-8 . The Rocks went on to rack up nine victories in ten outings, absorbing their only defeat at the claws of arch-rival St. X by the score of 12-6. It was this loss, however, which proved decisive in denying Trinity a shot at a second AAA title, as the Irish placed runner-up to eventual state champion St. X in the City Region. After a season which saw the Shamrocks average 23 points and 290 yards a game against usually much larger opponents, it was no surprise for Coach Kennedy to remark that . . . this Trinity bunch has more pride and heart than any l've been associated with.
