The Olympus Staff takes great pleasure in dedi- cating this edition to: MR. JAMES A. MONINGER, an alumnus and member of the faculty, in recogni- tion of his splendid Work at Trinity. During his many years of successful affiliation with Trinity students, Mr. Moninger has ably served in the capacity of English teacher, class ad- visor, and informal companion of all. MONINGER Zin illivmnriam .V , A.. 4 H+ X.f'1'N' ALVIN JANOVICH AUGUST 24, 1928-Ocroisaa 19, 1944 Alvin Janovich, son of Eli and lVIary Janovich, of Canton Town- ship, was a Junior in Trinity High School at the time of his death. As a student in the Vocational Agriculture Department, he took a keen interest in the activities, was popular with his classmates and eager to cooperate with the Department in school in all of its work. ln his Freshman year Alvin had been a member of the football squad. At the time of his death, he was assisting members of his family in moving some farm machinery and equipment when the tractor he was driving overturned pinning the youth and inflicting severe fractures and concussions, from which he never recovered. ij ROBERT ASI-IMORE AUGUST4, 1926-Ocroieak 1, 1941 ' A member of the class of 1944 who passed from us during the Fresh- man year, Robert Ashmore was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Ash- more then of Buffalo Township. Robert was a student in the Vocational Agriculture Department and was interested in athletics particularly football. His chief interest or hobby aside from his interest in athletics was in the welding of metals. We have participated in the sale of stamps and bonds but most important large numbers of our Trinity boys have enlisted in the service. The daily newspaper carries the story of their heroism in the fighting. Few service flags carry a longer list of names than does the flag of Trinity High School. Few schools have a longer list of boys who have given their lives in this great struggle for the rights of free men. May we not forget those who have given their all in order that we might live. MRS. Although at a loss, as to what lay ahead, We have Within, a determ-- ination to make good in spite of the War paint spread so lavishly by the upperclassmen. At a class meeting held on February twelfth, nineteen forty-hve, We chose Mrs. lVlcCarrell and Mr. McCullough as our advisors. Our social activities were scheduled for the future. Already members of our class have carried the blue and white of Trinity into many athletic contests. THRESHER Secretary As the curtain falls on the school year of 45l' we look back on the passing years, and recall the familiar faces of those who have gone before us. These are now scattered through-out the world. There are those who are in the armed forces, those who made the supreme sacrihce, and those doing their part on the home front. In recalling these, we find outstanding in our minds the class of 44f' Those who comprise this class were our friends and associates who, in their departure, presented the school with the stairway between the two buldings, a gift which will always be remembered. Our halls and stairways are not wide enough to permit two columns proceeding in opposite directions to pass through them at the same time. For these reasons some years ago the suggestion was made that a definite course of movement be followed. With the thought that much confusion could thus be avoided a group of Senior boys have been asked to aid in the direction of the movement of the student body through the halls and to render such services as will aid in the work of smoothing out the confusion. This year We have lost several members to the services. In this year of war, in spite of depleted membership, the Trinity Chapter Future Farmers of America has maintained its high standards of leadership, communitive service, supervised farming, and cooperation. These are the foundation stones of F.F.A. organizations. Three boys in the chapter this year received the Keystone Farmer Degree. These awards were presented at the State Convention at Har- risburg, January 19, at which Clarence Beddow was the official delegate of the chapter and county federation. The fact that many upperclassmen are now in the armed services has thrown much of the work of running the club on the shoulders of Freshmen and Sophomores. They have proven their interest and capabili- ties through active participation in such enterprises as the annual sub- scription campaign, farm equipment construction, etc. One of the most important steps taken this year by the chapter was the purchase of a tractor for use in plowing Victory Gardens in the com- munity. GLENN DYE In the early fall the membership was increased by initiation of the boys who had been members of the Junior body of the organization. The formal initiation was followed by an informal initiation held in the Gym Where some mysteries and surprises developed. After initiations a feed was enjoyed. ln addition to general meetings an Assembly Program was presented at which the student body was addressed by VVilbur Baird, Secretary of the Washington Y.lVI.C.A. Members attending the Older Boys' Conference at New Brighton were Robert Ellis from last year's club, Carl Bucheit, Charles Crompton, James Dunn and VVilliam Yvolf. As usual the Hi-Y held the mid-semester dance, Where the cares and disappointments of the year were forgotten for a short time. 4 SCIENCE CLUB Trinity Science Club is an afliliate of Sciences' Clubs of America. It was organized at Trinity last year. This year its membership is com- posed of nearly all the laboratory students. They are divided into three different groups which meet twice a month during the laboratory periods. It is an activit t e club. GO-T0-COLLEGE CLUB One of the most interesting clubs at Trinity is the Go-To-College Club sponsored by Mrs. Smith. The club holds its meetings the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, during the noon hour. Junior and Senior girls interested in college who make at least a B average and are able to retain that standard are invited to join. During this year it scheduled several social and educational programs that have been of interest to girls planning to go on to school. One of the most interesting affairs was a Formal Tea concentrating on the idea of helping the girls over the social hurdles confronting them at the first months of school away from home. Huffman, Mrs. McCarrell, and Mrs. Kincell are the Club Advisors. Experience proves valuable when looking for a secretarial position, so the Commercial Club of Trinity helps to provide the experience. During former years, each teacher was assigned a secretaryg how- ever, a new system has been introduced. Each period, one or two secre- taries work in the typing room and teachers having any work to be done send it up to this department. The work is completed and returned. The Commercial Club was active, sponsoring a tea dance and a ban- quet. New members were duly initiated by the older members. Tn order to be a member, you must be enrolled in the Commercial Course, your grades must be a C average or above, and a-majority of the members must vote on each possible candidate. C? The affairs planned by the Club have included: participation in a Christmas Formal, joint parties with the Hi-Y, and various other activi- ties throughout the year. Moxisrciziz The Junior Hi-Y is an organization consisting of Sophomore and Freshman boys who have attained a C average and upon approval of club have entered into the group. Following their induction they received a formal and an informal initiation. The purpose of the Junior Hi-Y is to create, maintain, and extend. throughout school and community, high standards of Christian character. During the year, the Hi-Y joined with the Junior Girl Reserves in various events. ln the early part of the year the girls sponsored a party for the Hi-Y and in return the boys held a swimming party for the girls. Since the Junior Hi-Y Works in afliliation with the Y.M.C.A. the boys sometimes enjoy it's facilities at meetings held there. MIXED CHORUS The Mixed Chorus, after having been idle for the past two years, has been reorganized. It has progressed very rapidly under the capable supervision of our directress, Mrs. Ruth Johnson. Starting with about six students, it has grown to approximately thirty-five members. The chorus sings sacred, classical, and popular music. They participated in the Christmas program and other activities. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE This group of Vo. Ag. students has long been known as, and errone- ously so, as the Ag. Council. Under the national F.F.A. constitution no such body exists, and in order to comply with the stipulations of this con- stitution, the group has been renamed the Executive Committee. The purpose of the committee is to supply impetus to the Chapter, plan meetings, act for the chapter in matters outside of meetings, and to further develop leadership abilities and participation. The duties of the committee can be summed up as directing the club business and car- rying to conclusion the decisions of the chapter as a whole. Membership is composed of chapter officers and boys of above aver- age merit and interest in this organization. , l ,Q . ADVANCED GIRLS' CHORUS . The Advanced Girls' Chorus has improved very much under the capable direction of our directress, Mrs. Ruth Johnson. The Chorus has taken part in assemblies and participated on the program of the Kiwanis Club. A few of the members also sang in outside activities. The fine points of diction have been stressed during the year. We hope that Mrs. Johnson will remain with us in the coming years and under her direction we know the Chorus will continue to do Hne work. ,r V. The Who's-Who column, inaugurated the previous year, was continued. We the Juniors, paid tribute to the Seniors in the last issue. The successeof the paper was due largely to the cooperation of the entire staff and the student body. The cream of Trinity this year is a little thinner than usual, since there are only eight students who had mental fortitude to delve into the adventures of Aeneas and the ill fated love of Dido. This advanced class forms the nucleus of the S.P.Q.R. CSinatus Populusque Romanusj Club, but each year the high ranking students from first year Latin are ad- mitted. This year there are, in addition to the eight advanced students, twenty-two second year students and on the ldes of Ma1'ch, thirty-live first year students were initiated. The main activity of the year centered around the Christmas season when the club donated food for a needy family. lt was delivered through the Child VVelfare Bureau. The usual spring picnic and frolic at the Log Cabin in VVashington Park is anticipated. The club suffered the loss of its only boy in the advanced class when Leonard Behanna was called to the Army Air Forces. FRESHMAN HOME ECONOMICS There are 13 girls in our Home Economics Club. We have had a very nice year and a lot of good times together. We had a Halloween Party and a Christmas Party. The girls made most of the goodies for both parties. They served at the football banquet and hope to be asked to serve again. We all paid a little amount of money every month for dues. VVe are looking forward to serving at other banquets to be held in the future. POP GOES THE WEASEL On the evening of April 16, at 8:15 o'clock, the Trinity High School Auditorium occasioned a setting for undue excitement. lt was the open- ing night for the Senior Play, Pop Goes the Weasel. The play was previously scheduled to be presented on April 13, but due to the death of President Roosevelt the date was postponed to April 16. The play, a three-act comedy, was written by Edwin S. Day. Miss Jennie M. Ferralli was the very capable director. The plot centered around a dude ranch at Sunset Lodge. There were amusing characters such as Henry, the lazy cowboy, and Iennie, the pistol-packin' sheriff, accompanied by her deputy, jawn. This play had never before been presented to the public. The cast presented the play to three different audiences: namely, the grade school children, Trinity students, and the general public. BEGINNING GIRLS' CHORUS Beginning Girls' Chorus has made considerable progress under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Johnson. This chorus, numbering approximately 35 girls, has been doing two and three-part songs as well as learning the fundamentals of music notation. V CLU B The V Club was organized this year at Trinity. lt is composed of members of the Senior Class who volunteered to sell WVar Bonds and Stamps. Approximately 553,000 was sold in Bonds and Stamps. Of this amount, 551,950 was designated for the purchase of a Field Ambulance. The Mintlte-Man Flag, which represents a 90? or more student partici- pation, was awarded to Trinity in January at a special assembly. Since that time, we have been able to keep the flag Waving every month. lfVe, the Seniors, have felt honored by being able to do this for our country and sincerely hope that lVar Bonds and Stamps will be sold at Trinity until final victory has been Won. The team of '45 encountered strong opposition in the section but is proud to boast a record of 5 wins to 4 losses. The team was broken by the loss of nine of the veteran team by graduation and induction. Verholtz and Leppert were the two reliables of last year but VVa1'co, Bruce, Jaworski, Lavrich, Clark, and Progar enjoyed working together and the result was a surprisingly strong and powerful team. VVarco had his first opportunity for public appearance this year and took a great advantage of it by displaying his fielding abilities to all of the action praising followers of Trinity. He led in individual scoring with 37 points for the season. ln viewing the records we are happy to read Trinity 2, lvashing- ton O. Although the score was much disputed, any spectator will reassure you that VVash Hi was fortunate in escaping with that close a score. BAN D Our band has been very active this year. Inasmuch as it has been playing at the football and basketball games and participating in parades. Although the entire team had to be replaced, the boys were greatly benelited by the varsity action which they experienced last year. The presence of some who have left Trinity would have greatly strengthened the team, but through the grueling hours of practice the organization was quick to learn the value of teamwork and emerged with a reasonable record. Q Trinity staged the seasonal upset in the Red Cross benefit tourna- ment at the Wasliington High School gym. A strong, section-champion, East VVashington team was our victim. This victory matched us with our third game of the season with our city rival, VVash High. The out- come of all three was the same, but our first encounter with them was our most exciting. Clark, Davis, Oliverio, and Weber are the 'graduating seniors whose places must be filled next year. CHEERLEADERS Let's go everybody with a big-HILLER TEAM! The cheerleaders really had the pep this year. Just think of a football or basketball game without them! Corrine Fetherlin, Helen M. Engle, Glenn Dye, and Kenny Burns, the Senior Cheerleaders, will be greatly missed by the student body. Hilda Cain, Edith lVIcVay, Jimmy Tarr, Bill May, the Junior Cheer- leaders, have Worked hard and Well deserve the honor of becoming senior cheerleaders. Some of the boys will be playing varsity next year. Mr. Decker used a system of two teams which he has never done before. Qne team consists of: Boyles, lVIcKahan, Tarr, Kaminske, and Abraham. The other consists off Bannister, Tomsic, Nlaslik, Spragg, Headley, and Batson. With these two teams the Reserves showed great power against their rivals, Canonsbu-rg, twice, and VVash High, the later of the two. Each year upon attainment of a certain number of points the girls are admitted into the club and receive a letter. With the aid of the Boys' Athletic Association, the club has spon- sored all the Skating Parties. Money earned from the Parties is used as a fund for the purchase of sweaters for our girl and boy athletes. On November Seventeenth a Football Dance was held to celebrate the successful season which the football team had passed. Then in the school cafeteria on December Seventh the annual Football Banquet was held in honor of the team, and Coach, Mr. Decker. The guest speaker was Clarence Day, editor of The VVashington Observer. Shortly after the first semester, Miss Barbara Reynolds, one of our advisors, left Trinity, but under the capable leadership of Miss Jennie Ferralli all activities met with great success. ENGLE TRACK 44 At the call of spring, M1'. Decker was calling for his track boys. Answering were: Bennett, Ely, Jaworski, jones, Oliverio, Pazyniah, Pri- vara, Thompson, Verholtz, and many others. Opening the season Trinity was guest at Vvash-Hi on April 25. VVash-Hi came out on top by a score of 742 to Trinity 5216. Verholtz lead our scoring with 13 points. Taking first in the high and low hurdles and second in the broad jump. Privara captured 11 points by taking second in the 100-yard dash, second 220 and first in the broad jump. Thompson of Trinity took first in the mile. Many others took part in the scoring. ' On May 5 an invitational meet was held. Trinity was one of the fifteen schools represented. Trinity's total was 6 points. Privara taking first in the broad jump and Warco taking fifth in the pole vault. May 12, the Trinity squad faced Canonsburg, VVash-Hi and VVaynes- burg at VVash-Hi field. The Gunners were victorious with 56-1,!6, VVash-Hi 52, Trinity 49-5f6, and VVaynesburg 7. Had Trinity taken the last field event, javelin throwing, they would have taken first place in the meet. Trinity was strong in the broad jump, Privara taking first, jones taking second and Verholtz taking fourth. Verholtz captured first in low hurdles, VVarco took first, pole vault, and Jaworski, discus. jaworski tied for high scorer with 12 points. Taking first in high jump, discus and third in javelin. VARSITY CLUB A new club consisting of the Varsity Girls' Basketball Teams of the Sophomore, junior, and Senior class has been formed and given the name HVarsity Club. The club is sponsored and under the supervision of lVIrs. lWcCarrell who is a very capable leader. Members of the club meet every Thursday at the Y.XV.C.A., at which time the gym floor and swimming pool are at their disposal.
