Mrs. Ruth Ryan, our MONITOR. FOREWORD t As the years pass by and you leaf through this, your l958 Monitor, the staff sincerely hopes that you will be reminded of happy times by the appearance of an old friend's face, of a candid shot of scenes on the spot. A The memorial sports seasons, the formal dances. plays and assemblies, together with the teachers and students working together in pleasure and studies, have built the school and your year book. Need we say more than, MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS! A Mike Darrah Editor-in-Chief Superintendenfs Message ln the year of 1910 the first recorded attendance of the newly formed Trinity County High School num- bered l5 students. The school was first housed in the upper floor of the elementary school building. Later it was moved to another site located on the present school grounds. Enrollments paralleled the development of mining up to 1940 when the peak of mining operations reached its climax. Attendance numbered 168. The oncoming war brought a rapid decline in mining and the move- ment of people to the defense industries. ln 1944 the lowest ebb in attendance since 1926 was reached--49. The development of the lumber industry brought a resurge of population through 1954. The High School then numbered 220. The development of a second high school at Hayfork and the Trinity River Project gave another surge of population growth. ln 1956, 308 stu- dents attended school, and this year our peak enroll- ment has been 430. These facts, entwined with our memories of school friends, activities and achievements of the past, leave all of us with nostalgic memories and bright visions of the future. Perhaps this land of beauty will have its third and most far reaching growth from recreation and outdoor sports activities. It will not be surprising to see 700 to 1000 pupils attending high school in the county before the next decade passes. TOM PREECE ON! si! NOW' f ff' Q 1 ff f' ffl' Aa if Whey, ,.,. . K K Q K fy .. Senior May 29, l958, is a day which will be long remem- bered by the class of l958. ln September, 1954, they started out with 76 stu- dents who had earned the right to say that they were freshmen. They were led by President, Bernie Leas. Vice-president Butch Dean, Secretary Freddie Step- pling, Treasurer Angela Sparks, and Sergeant-at-Arms, Lynn Grant. The class was very proud of their Harvest Carnival candidates, Barbara Clawford and Butch Dean, who came in second in the King and Queen contest. The class also won the white elephant contest. Barbara Rose and Freddie Steppling were Home- coming Queen candidates that year. The frosh were very active in both scholastic and extra-curricular activities that year. Mr. Ocock and Mr. Jinks were their advisors. Efficient during their sophomore year were their class officers: President, Don Shelpg Vice-president, David Murdock, Secretary, Phyllis Winters, Treasurer, Wanda Huettg Sergeant-at-Arms, Rollie Shipley. They were well represented in the Carnival by their King and Queen candidates Angela Sparks and Nick Carter who came in second place. lt was a very proud sophomore class when their candidate Bonnie Morton was crowned Homecoming Oueen. Their other candidate was Dawna Jackson. The sophomore class Sock Hop in the spring was a huge success with the theme Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White. , Mr. Prindle and Mr. Qse were their advisors that year. Leading the class through their junior year were Colin Clark, President, Angela Sparks, Vice-president, Mike Darrah, Secretary, Lynn Grant, Treasurer, Rollie Shipley and Nonie Smith. Sergeant-at-Arms. The second crowning of Bonnie Morton as Home- coming Queen was an event which proved the class of 58 was capable of almost anything. History The biggest event of the year as far as the juniors were concerned was the junior prom. They use Cana- dian Sunset as their theme. Their Carnival King and Queen candidates, Bar- bara Rose and Colin Clark, again came in second. The Perfect Idiot was the name of the junior play which was directed by Mike Darrah. Mr. Craw- ford was the advisor. Mrs. Burnham was in charge of the makeup. After three years of hard work the class finally at- tained the rank of seniors. President Roger Ackerman, Vice-president Mike Darrah, Secretary Barbara Rose, Treasurer Kyla Thomas, and Sergeant-at-Arms Nonie Smith and Rollie Shipley, led the class through their last year. By popular demand Mr. Crawford and Mrs. Burn- ham returned to advise the class through their senior year. The Harvest Carnival, sponsored by the class, proved to be one of the best ever given. The senior can- didates for King and Queen, Ruth Ann Parham and Al Rhodes, ruled over the carnival. The senior play, Curtain Going Up, was an out- standing production. For the first time in the history of T.C.H.S. the play was performed in a theater in the round and it was a big success. Mrs. White and Mr. Whalen directed and aided the cast. The senior ball was one of the biggest highlights of the year. April Love was the theme they chose for the ball and it was most appropriate since the ball was held April 26. The Alumni Dinner, Baccalaureate, and finally graduation. brought to a close the class's high school career. The football games, the parties, class assemblies, finals, all these things will long be remembered and treasured in the hearts of those who belonged to the class of l958. Journalism Conlerencetis Successful Trinity Hlgh's first journalism conference was opened by Mr. John Steppllng on the 13th of December at 10:30 a.m. He turn- ed it over to Mr. Preece, who wel- comed the speakers and the stu- 'lents from the other schools. Mr. Bert Phillips acted as mon- itor of the conference. He introduced Paul Boden- hamer, editor of the 'Redding Searchlight. Mr. Bodenhamer spoke about the running of a newspaper office ln general. Af- ter his talk, he answered ques- tions asked by students from Hayfork, Hoopa, and Trinity High Schools. Scoop Beal, editor of the Eureka paper, then told the groiip how high school and col- lege students helped in writing articles for the newspaper. Hex also told how sports played a big part in the paper. He ended his talk with a poem about sports. After hearing these speeches, the students were taken by bus to the Trinity Journal where Mr. Steppling showed them how a newspaper was put out. Then the students were taken to the parish house for lunch. At the luncheon, Mr. Henry MacArthur, of Sacramento, talk- ed about such workshops as the one being held here, and how if there were more of them held, there would be more interest shown in jdurnallsm by studentsg He alsodlscussed wire service re- porting. After lunch the students went back to the high school. There, Mr. Carey Guichard, Nbusinless manager of the Redding Search- light, told about the advertising and business end of the news- paper and the different job op- portunities in a newspaper office. Mr. Nell H ' . .. of Eureka, finished the program with a tal? on newspaper photography. H also showed the group somefcam- eras and pictures. ' The students enjoyed this workshop. Many of the students felt that there sholud be more of these workshops -- also iri other fields. i The visiting speakers alsad felt that more workshops should be given as it increases the interi est of the students ln the fields being considered. The conference began at 9:00 a.m,, registration having been from 8:30 to 9:00. The first speaker was Mr. George Brand, managing editor of the Redding Record Search- light, who spoke on news .stories and editorials. He said, The pur- pose of a news story is first to inform the readers, second, to' entertain. The 'second speaker, Mr. Jack Robertson, printer and former newspaper editqr, spoke on head- lines and layouts. During his talk he also emphasized the im- portance of meetihg deadlines in putting out a newspaper. Mr. William Lee, managing ed- itor of the Chlco Bmterprlse 'Rec- ord, gave an interesting talk on of the Red ,Bluff Daily News. His topic was Write It Right. Wilson emphasized putting the five W's and the H into the first paragraph or two of a news story. The five W's and the I-I are Who, Wlhatv Wh1y, When, Where and How. The! ast para- graphs contaln less pertinent facts and are not absolutely necessary to the story. He said, By doing this, if the story has to be cut down, the last para- graph could be out off and the story would still contain all tho, important facts Mr. Wilson also discussed the importance of qualification. I-Ie said that quotes made a story, more interesting, but that it was absolutely necessary to get them quotation and who said lt cor- rect. If you don't put down who made the statement, he said, then the paper is left open for a libel suit. Four schools, Enterprise, Red frm- U. I 'Y ml! 11 the lm me imc , fx gy-A. .. . W ,,,, q , ....
