We who have taken up the task handed down to us realize our responsibility. Our object has been not merely to improve upon the Work of our predecessors nor simply to make an annual Which will reflect credit upon the class of nineteen hundred and five. We have endeavored to compile a book Worthy of the college,-- one that will be a source of satisfaction to her sons and friends. - With the hope that We have succeeded in some degree, vve present this IVY to all Whom it may interest. To those who have aided us in its production, We extend our sincere thanks. N 1 1 L A A I 5 1905 THE TRINITYIVY 9 qualified to pursue. A course covering three years and adapted to the training of civil engineers is now offered to special students. Upon honorable dismissal, they are entitled to a certificate from the President, stating the studies which they have pursued. In certain departments the college offers, also, instruction for graduate fstudents. The depart- ments of instruction in the college number tvventy-four, including eighty-two elective and voluntary courses. The Principle of Instruction The number of the teaching force, large relatively to the number of those taught, admits of a close relation between instructors and students. Each student is held accountable for his work every day, and receives personal encouragement and guidance to a degree impossible where the number of the taught is greater. Practical research and laboratory methods are applied Wherever possible. The Library The College Library, numbering 47,ooo volumes, is under the superintendence of a professional librarian,'vvho guides the students in the use of books. They have also at their command the Watkinson Reference Library of 53,ooo volumes, the Library of the Connecticut Historical Society, and hthe Hartford Public Library with its Well-A stocked reading rooms. Laboratories and Observatory The Jarvis Physical Laboratory contains, in addition to the lecture and apparatus rooms, a large laboratory for Work in the elementary courses, a reference library and several smaller laboratories adapted and devoted to advanced Work of a special character. The laboratory has a very complete equipment for Work in all the branches of Physics. Special attention has been given to making the facilities for work in electricity as complete as possible. The department is provided with standard apparatus for electrical measurements, and has a Workshop, steam engine, andndirect current and polyphase alternating current. generators for its special use. 10 THE TRINITY IVY Vol.32 The jarvis Chemical Laboratory is well equipped for work in general experimental and organic chemistry, in qualitative and quantitative analysis, and in assaying and gas analysis. The main laboratory has desk space for thirty students working at one time. This room is devoted to work in general experimental chemistry and qualitative analysis. For work in quantitative analysis and organic chemistry separate laboratories are provided and properly equipped. A room set apart for assaying is fitted up with suitable furnaces and other necessary material. The new Hall of Natural History contains biological, botanical, geological and mineralogical laboratories provided with every modern equipment. The Observatory contains a six and a half inch refractor, a two and a half inch transit, a standard clock, a chronograph, a small refractor, a portable transit, a sextant, and conveniences for the simpler work in astronomical photography. Gymnasium and Athletic Field A Gymnasium is supplied with the best apparatus, in the use of which the students are trained by a special instructor. A new athletic field, about nine acres in area, was recently completed at an expense of S ro,000, contributed by friends and alumni of the college. Fellowships, Scholarships and Prizes The Russell Fellowship, yielding about 3400, is awarded biennially to a member of the graduating class of superior ability, who engages to pursue an approved course of graduate study at Trinity College or at some foreign university. The Holland scholarships, each having an annual value of 3600, are awarded to the students attaining the highest rank in the Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman classes respectively. Prizes of the aggregate value of 3490 are awarded in the several departments. Expenses A The amount of the Treasurer's bills each year varies from as 177.50 to 3242.50 Board can be obtained at 34.00 a Qweek and upwards, making the cost of board for thirty-seven weeks, at the lowest rate, 1905 THE TRINITY IVY 11 3148. The amount of the Treasurer's bills can be reduced to holders of beneficiary scholarships, of which there are more than fifty. Situation The buildings of the college are situated on a site commanding beautiful views in the southern part of Hartford, itself one of the most beautiful cities of New England. The largest of the buildings, more than 600 feet in length, intended to form the West side of a great quadrangle, is of stone in the English secular-gothic style, and is one of the most notable collegiate buildings of the country. The Jarvis Laboratories, the Hall of Natural History, and the Gymnasium, are tasteful and ,commodious structures of brick. Six of the college fraternities have special chapter houses. For catalogues apply to the President or to the Secretary of the Faculty. ' QQ.-sz vw 1 .'l7JIl lf 1, -:fi ,,, in qgalrif? 574352 my . , .. -nv .. In the social way, too, some of our men have won no small reputation. But to continue to enumerate 'o4's strong points would be encroaching too largely on the pages of this book, and might be considered boastful in the Historian. Suffice it to say that during our four years' stay here, 1904 has kept well in the front rank in everything which tends to the improvement of the college and of ourselves as members of it. May we continue to uphold the good reputation of our class in the wider walks of life, always true to our motto, Tpofrog Qtkazos Ifrfyya Tzyzzbfarov There is one more honor which we may very justly claim, though one in which the pleasure is mingled with sadness. We shall be the last class to graduate under that learned gentleman who has held for so many years and with such dignity and ability the office of President of our college. Among the memories of Trinity which we shall cherish in after years, none shall be dearer than the remembrance of our beloved President. The interest of the college and the welfare of the students have always held the first place in his heart, as we who know Dr. Smith can most emphatically declare. The best wishes of every man in the class of 1904 will follow him always, of that he may be confident. . P. L. L. wk cl .. But what does it matter whether or not his class forced back their opponents in the push rush, or if they crossed the goal line more frequently, or ran around the bases a few more times? Such things will be forgotten soon after graduation. When our turn comes perhaps we shall be pardoned if we boast, All the men of 1905 worked for the college and the class, doing all in their power for both because they loved Trinity and r9o5. COWPER - HiSt0fia11 Q- ' 4 1 42 THE TRINITY IVY VOL 32 Sophomore Class History N OLD alumnus was reported to have said recently, If I can live to see the Sophomore class then I can die in peace. YT Such an expression is surprising when we consider how long the college has awaited our coming. All wrongs would be righted, obsolete customs abolished, new methods of class government introduced. In short the college would have reached its millennium. Frankly speaking, we are proud of our record and of our class. A writer once said that the man' doubtful of his claims to recognition attempts to win acknowledgment by blowing his own horn. We need not do this for the plain facts are more than convincing. We have acted our part in the college world as best we could and feel justly pleased with what we have accomplished and for what we stand. The class has always been for the college, acted for the college and played an important part in college affairs. Withdraw the IQO6 men from the various organizations and the loss will be most sadly felt. In numbers and quality naughty-six forms the nucleus of all the athletic teams, the glee, mandolin and debating clubs, the T able! board, and of any association that represents Trinity. If it is possible, separate the class from the college and examine the record as a class. To an unbiassed observer we connot help but seem the class of the college. The members are typical Trinity men and this means a great deal. The best of feeling prevails within the class and everyone considers it a pleasant duty to respond to any such call as All out 'o6! Push rush! All our class teams are champions, but to rehearse their numerous victories would take too long. This pleasant reading can be found the T able! and the IVY. The only disappoint- ment this year was the push-rush, a farce which the judges thought was for their amusement and constantly called ties of rushes which to the minds of the unprejudiced spectators we clearly won. In scholar- ship also the blue and the gray is near the top. 1905 THE TRINITY IVY 43 But the greatest triumph Was the abolition of hazing. There was a feeling in the class that as long as hazing continued the efforts of the alumni to increase the number of students would be partly defeated. The resolution was unanimously passed early in the fall and so far has worked successfully. The rules and traditions were impressed upon the Freshmen by means of neatly printed notices instead of by nightly applications of the paddle. In conclusion, We recommend our example to the Freshmen, who have been treated more fairly than any entering class of recent years. Next fall they will experience how difficult it is to be Sophomores and to have few friends in college outside the class and then they can say, if they do not now, that 1906 always lived up to its motto, umivfa zrpbs 1511 'riltzov iE1f6pa. 4 F. Historian 48 THE TRINITY IVY Vol. 3, Freshman Class History E ARE not a particularly large class,-we are not a par. ticularly strong class in any one form of college activity, but it is certain that during the few months of our con- nection with the college, we have done much for Trinity in many ways. We have no desire to run the college until ' our rightful time comes and until we have been taught how to manage college affairs by the classes above us. However, we do wish in every way to make Trinity proud of IQO7 and to that end we have worked and will continue to work for the college and our class. On bloody Monday we won the bulletin board rush, and in the push-rush fought IQO6 to a standstill so that the event had to be declared a draw. At the beer rush in the evening we covered ourselves with glory as hosts and with our program of speeches Qentirely impromptul we brought down the house. Cn the football squad we had fifteen men, three of whom won their letter and three their stripes. We lost the inter-class football gameto an exceptionally strong class team, while our team was without the services of two of its best men who were unable to play on account of injuries received in the Wesleyan game. Two of our members are on the basketball team. In the inter-class series we defeated the upperclass teams and were finally bracketed with 1906 for the championship. Our banquet to the Juniors is said to have been one of the most suc- cessful ever given. At the time of writing it is too early to tell of our St. Patrick's Day ceremonies and to give an idea of our ability in track and baseball but those who are interested in us may rest assured that our best ehforts will always be put forward when we are struggling for our Alma Mater and IQO7. 1905 THE TRINITY IVY 49 Members of the Freshman Class , ERNEST CECIL BILLER CHARLES STANLEY BRYAN. Muse, inspire my humble pen to write The darksome deeds of that most darksome night, Whose acts committed live through endless time, The blackest written on the rolls of crime. all- it 95 The night was dread to suit the dreadsome deed And lowered surly over hill and mead. A single star had glimmered slowly out, Asif some shame had put e'en it to rout. The college buildings reared a shapeless bulk, And topped the lofty hill, a blackened hulk, Save where a solitary beam of light Showed dimly forth and scarce defied the night, As in a highest room, with endless toil, A scholar burned the lonely mid-night 011. Across the dewy grass a figure crept And rnumed, on his purpose, stealthy, step't. He reached the buildings, half desired to rung A minute more-the awful deed was done. CANTER II. The morning broke, a morning cold and drear. The air was filled with whisperings and with fear The day came on, a day of wrath and strife, And slowly clearer grew the signs of life. A section door was opened in the row And up the walk came Eddie, always slowg At Jarvis Hall he stopped to read of teas Or see who'd lost the latest bunch of keys, But looked in vain, discovered was the sin, A space of wall where bulletin had been. This was too much for Eddie, he was dazed And wandered off with shaking head, amazed. And next appeared a figure built for use, A man who stepped a mile and looked like Zeus. Around he cast a penetrating look, And as he walked the college buildings shook. He carried in his hand a notice white Which said The MissionlClub will meet to-night To raise a fund to purchase china bowls 'L' A. 1905 THE TRINITY IVY 157 The bulletin is gone, we have no track Nor are there any plans to get it back. Now I propose, our grief for this to smother And let the honored faculty get another. Some threats were made and resolutions read But in each heart the board was mourned as dead. CANTER IV. Thus passed the old and honored notice-board. Its loss was wept, then borne and then ignored. As each old relic dies and has its day, So died the board and mem'ry passed away. Its place his taken in a certain wise, But never iilled--the new board's small in size. But then perhaps it's young and will aspire To hold the honor once held by its sire. P I-IILIP EVERETT CURTISS. A Victim of Circumstances LL FRESHMEN are more or less guileless and unsophisti- 'Q cated when they enter college, and I belonged decidedly to mu the more class. Otherwisel would not have been strand- ed at a small town in the western part of the state with 'sf nothing but my dress-suit case, fifteen cents, and my sales- man's outfit for Brown and Co.'s latest-published books. When I unloaded upon the unwilling and unfortunate landlady the dress- suit case and outfit in payment for back board, and spent the fifteen cents for a scant dinner, my dreams of going through college on the pro- ceeds of a sumrner's canvassing of A Trip Through Cuba with Doctor Jones fell through with a crash. With humbled spirit I sought the railroad track, and, with the ease borne of long experience, swung aboard the first fast freight for home. It was in the warm twilight of a july evening, and we rumbled 4 ' Kit 1905 A THE TRINITYIVY 159 Hain't they, though? That's queer! 'Pears to me they learn a fellow most everything at them schools ! S I wish they'd teach us how to make a little money. They tell you what your ancestors did a hundred or a thousand or a million years ago, just as you want it, and then leave out the only really important thing there is. I'm for business the minute I strike the town, and a steady job too-I don't care if itls only a grocery clerk. Now, boy, don't be a fool. You don't look far ahead enough, that's the trouble g but it's so much easier tu look back, I s'pose, and see what you didn't do that you should,'a'done, that I dunno as I ought ter blame you fer not knowing what's what. It kind o' reminds me of a little experience we had on this here very road not more 'an a few years ago. We was hittin' up good speed out aways 'tother side o' Lewistown to help us over the long grades. The boys was loafin' in the cab jest es now, havin' a purty good time, too, I guess. One feller, while shufflin' the cards, happened to look out an' saw a headlight no more 'an a mile back, where no headlight belonged g but poker was more interesting so he didn't say nothin'. Well, no more 'an ten minutes later I spied that light and it was so dog gone close we could make out there was nothin' but engine and tender--cleanest case of runaway I ever seen. Now it ain't a bit o' fun to have a back-end collision any time, and 'specially when you have tu take refuge on top o' cars carrying dynamite as our'n often was, for them big oil wells we passed back aways. VVell, we stared awhile at that there light dancin' around the bends, an' mockin' every move we made, an' hangin' on to our steps as if never to be shook off g then, every rnother's son of us shuffled fer any- thing we could get aholt of. Finally some geezer showed up with a big can o' lard his wife made him get fer her from a farmer over at Lewis- town. Two of the boys laid down on the platform with long sticks smeared with the stuff, and when we slowed down as we struck the grade, they daubed them rails slick as butter. That headlight didn't bother us no more, and after a while we backed down cautious like to see what was doin'. Its fame is based on a solid foundation. For originality, Tiffany 8: Co. are unsurpassed, the skill and intelli- gence shown in the execution of their work are themes for continuous comment, while in artistic detail, and conscientious care, they are far in advance of European or American competitors. It is not, therefore, a matter for surprise that Kaiser William, of Germany, should become intensely interested in a specimen of Tiffany 8z Co.'s exquisitely beautiful work--a vase presented to the Frankfort Saengerfest, by the wealthy New Yorker, Mr. Pagenstecher. When the Kaiser saw this vase, he exclaimed: Wonderful! Such work cannot be done in Germany 1 The Kaiser's habit of bluntly telling the truth did not please the German silversmiths, who sent a deputation to complain that his assertion was unjust. The Kaiser refused to eat his words, as they say in Russia, replying to the deputation as follows: H I will give you one more chance I If you fail, I will order my trophies in New York in future. Could any higher compliment, or more substantial recognition be given to the firm of Tiffany 8z Co. ? Americans are justly proud of this great house, and The Item predicts that one more chance will be sufficient to convince the mighty German Emperor that if he wants trophies that are the best in all respects-representing the highest accomplishment in originality, art and manu- facture-he must give the order to Tiffany 8: Co. -Editorial-Philadelphia Hem, 3 October, 1903 'Q s I HIGHLAND LINEN Hand-Made Style 6 N-HUp,L O ll Highland Linen with deckle edges, giv- ing the eflect of hand-made paper, is the latest. ill If you have tried Highland Linen you will understand Why it has met such Wide- spread popularity.
