1 .sh.ut:xs:.a..i f r, G-Editorial. We take great pleasure in presenting to the undergraduates and friends of 'the College, the first IVY which has been published since our establishment in the new buildings. Our rooms are all we could desire, the buildings are the finest of the kind in this country, the view is beautifulg in short, we have -every thing which could combine to make us comfortable and contented during our college course. We have, this year, taken upon ourselves, at considerable trouble and expense, the task of making the IVY accord as much as possible with the beauty and novelty of our surroundings. To accomplish this purpose has been no small undertaking. As the first step toward this object we have discarded the old, time-honored cover, and have adopted one which is entirely new, both in material and design. Another innovation has been the replacing of the insignificant wood-cuts representing the editors, formerly placed in the front and back of the IVY, by cuts drawn on stone from photographs. In short, the whole appearance of the IVY has been materially changed flet us hope for the betterj, and it can now take a foremost position among the publications of other colleges. We trust to the class of '81 to follow in our footsteps, and to improve, if necessary, the IVY. Athletics appear to have taken a fresh start this year. The first spring meeting of the Athletic Association, held May 25, 1878, was a decided success. Several of the records then made surpass those ,of any other college in the country. Our Foot Ball eleven with very little practice played two very creditable games with Yale. 4 Base Ball prospects seem rather more favorable than usual. The Freshman Class has furnished an unusually large number of candidates for the nine. XVith plenty of practice, we hope the team will gain honor, both for the College and for themselves. We are glad to say that the Boat Club has finally succeeded in raising enough money to build the long-talked-of Boat-House. Since the erection of this building quite a number of students have purchased shells, and at the present time six men are in training for a four-oared race with the Hartford Rowing Club. During the first part of this term, the dissatisfaction which prevailed among the' undergraduates culminated, on and after Washington's Birthday, in a very serious revolt against the rights of the Faculty to enforce certain rules. The difficulties were finally amicably and satisfactorily adjusted, through the agency of Bishop Williams and the parents of many of the students. ' It is with deep sorrow for our loss that we are called upon to express the feelings of the class in mourning the death of our beloved classmate, EDXVARD INGERSOLI. WYXRREN. By his kindness and affability, he rendered himself dear to all during the few months that he was with us. In his death we have to piourp the loss of a true Christian, an earnest student, and a faithful and dear rienc . Hoping that due allowance will be made for all shortcomings, we entrust the future care of the IVY to the class of '81, feeling sure that they will prove themselves not unworthy of such a tntst.
