It is the end of Trinity's second decade as an institution of higher education and as we look back and reminisce upon the 1978-1979 school year it is a good opportunity to evaluate Trinity, define its goals and rededicate ourselves to the tasks we have been given in order that these goals may be reached. To make Trinity what it is today, it has taken constituents, administrators, Staff, faculty, and students who are willing to surrender time, money and often comfort and conveniences because they saw Trinity as an institution with a purpose and with goals worth striving for. Trinity's educational plan is built upon the union of liberal arts training and career training. Its location in the metropolitan area of Chicago gives rise to excellent opportunities for students to receive practical, on-the-job career training. Trinity hopes to prepare students who will carry a christian perspective with them into all aspects of their life as they assume the responsibilities of Christian adults in the world. ax' -M' ' I ,., . ' . ,... ,,A, I ,, I The 1978-1979 school year ended with some feelings of apprehension. Trinity was faced with a difficult situa- tion. Some of the key faculty members were not going to be returning to Trinity in the fall. This left many teach- ing positions vacant. A large portion of the responsibility for finding teachers was put on Dr. Vander Slik, the Academic Dean. This year also was Dr. Vander Slik's first year at Trinity. We asked him what he looked for when interviewing a candidate for a faculty position. A task that engages much of m energy is building the faculty. A conspicuous part of that task is finding new faculty members. What does Trinity look for in a new faculty person? There are two kinds of qualifications. First, we seek people who are personally committed to the Lordship of Christ and who can articulate a kingdom view in the substantive field of their expertise. Second, we want people with solid academic credentials who can share learning with students and the rest of the Trinity community. The process of searching for faculty is arduous. We de- fine a position, broadly advertise its availability, try to stimulate applications through friends of the college, evaluate respondents, interview promising candidates, and appoint the very best person available. Interviews are crucial. At Trinity they are very searching. Typically a candidate comes to campus and spends some time with a department representative and the Dean. He or she teach- es a class in the area of special interest. Then a presenta- tion is made to the whole faculty on the topic, A Chris- tian Approach to teaching . CFill in the blank with the appropriate disciplinej Further discus- sions take place with the Faculty Evaluation Committee, the President, Dean, faculty, and students in the affected discipline. The candidate is interviewed by the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees. Academic Affairs Committee members are es ecially concerned with the spiritual commitment and ability of the candi- date to integrate reformed faith with learning. After in- terviews, the Dean draws together the evaluations of the many garticipants for a decision on whether or not to offer t e position to the candidate. A less noticeable part of faculty building consists of stim- ulating and encouraging professional growth. The Dean seeks to know the strengths that faculty possess and use those abilities as fully as possible. It is my responsibility to remedy deficiencies, reward accomplishments and es- tablish an environment that encourages achievement. God has entrusted to Trinity an able and dedicated facul- ty. It is a joy for me to take part with them in teaching the Trinity student body. Together may we all give God the glory for bringing us together in this place. 41 f . -.fivgxg , 4 WK? 1 'rf '- - .4 173 -J My My MJ gui ' mfff.,,.w., 12 , . ,, , ., ,., -5'.5.5.52Z?32g1f fl . Students and facul- ty greatly appreciate many of the con- veniences made available by the var- ious secretaries and managers. Finan- cial Aid advice, policy regulations, money exchange route, etc. are made familiar to the student by these peo- ple. They are also helpful in everything from ordering a new book from a pub- lisher, to finding a part-time job for the student. It is necessary to thank these people for showing their dedication to Chris- tian service, not only because they are efficient, but because they are con- cerned. Favors are granted and trust is established because these people do more than just their job requirements. Thank-you! Y 9 -N x SI ' I 1 1 get -- 1 ' 1: 1 Wx ' I ' d , X . I 3 3 QQ I as S. V1 II I ',I fi: km mi' The annual convocation ceremony at Trinity Christian College, a time of rededication for both students and faculty, was held on Sep- tember 6 at Palos Reformed Church. The cere- mony was opened by Stephen P. Mitchell, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He intro- duced Dr. William Stronks, Professor of Mod- ern Languages at Trinity and the main speaker for the evening. Dr. Stronks challenged his audience to live a life of new values which are different than those of today's society. He re- minded his listeners of the powerful words of Micah 6:8, He has showed you, O man, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Following the convocation ad- dress, Jim Dykstra, President of Q i, ,-Qe the Student Association, led the WW- entire assembly in the convoca- tion litany. CONVOCATION President Dennis Hoekstra and Dr. Jack Van Der Slik, Academic Dean, then presented the schol- arship awards. Following the convocation cere- mony, the Trinity Women's Guild hosted a reception in the fellow- ship hall of the church. TRINITY CHRISTIAN COLLEGE ., f .Q-, .. . I :fe :AA ini' 'W . ., V. Ig' E is ll, While it rained outside, sixty-seven graduates jovially congregated at the Calvary Reformed Church in Orland Park on Saturday morning, May 19, to don blue caps and gowns. Some of them felt a certain kinship with the Trinity professors who, robed in their regalia, would follow the graduates in the processional, led by marshalls Paul Van Stedum and Martha Madany. After a greeting by Dr. Luke Schaap, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the graduates and audience were ad- dressed by Dr. Paul Henry, political sci- entist and currently assistant minority floor leader of the Michigan House of Representatives. Following the ad- dress, graduate Marty Henderson led the Graduation Litany, incorporating scripture and song. Forty-seven seniors then crossed the platform to receive diplomas confer- ring the Bachelor of Arts degree, and ten Business Administration and Medical Technology students received the Bachelor of Science Degree. Cameras snapped, congratula- tions were given, and outside the sun shone. ,Q ? . ,F my ,QQ GRADUATION TRINITY CHRISTIAN COLLEGE 9? WN '95 I, .' Flag Football fizzled out after only a few games because of the weather. Hoc- Soc was the most enjoyable and pro- vided some very exciting action. The Moluccan terrorists took the cham- pionship. Basketball and floor hockey intramurals here at Trinity also pro- vided the fans with plenty of action. The team included Karla Buteyn, Julie Verhulst, Brenda Bielema, Linda VanderMolen, Joleen VanGilst, Jane DeJong, Deb VanDrunen, Diane Guerrin, Gwen VanderArk Cathy Feyer, and Pam Gabrielse. Brun Ball was a new game this year as well as different. The women enjoyed playing the game but some thought it a bit to strenuous. In the preceding years we had a very academic and theoretical approach to the rally. ln this year's rally, we attempted to go beyond the theoretical and deal with an issue in a much more concrete way. The theme of this year's rally was MobiIizing the Christian Diacon- ate, with special regard to the issue of poverty. We had also hoped to involve the community, of which Trinity is a part, by directly inviting the deacons and ministers of all the surrounding Christian Reformed Classises, and by also sending invitation to various denominational agenies such as the Board of Christian Reformed World Missions, the Christian Reformed Board of Home Missions, the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, and the La Salle Street Church, here in Chicago. The speakers and workshops leaders were drawn from a wide range of organizations and positions. The keynote address was delivered by J.P Tiemstra of Calvin Collage's Economic Department. He opened the Rally with a world-wide view of the present situation in relation to poverty. He was followed the next day by, Dr. N. Monsma, Professor of Economics at Calvin College, who spoke on the national issues in relation to poverty, and how Christians should and can involve themselves with causes and consequence of poverty. Mr. J. Boldnew, Home Missionary for the Christian Reformed Church in Appal- chian was alsoa speaker. Mr. E. van Donkersgoeld, Executive Director Of the Christian Farmer's Federation of Ontario also spoke to us on issue of land use and a just food policy. In afternoon there were three workshops, which dealt with more of the local issues, here in Chicago. The workshop leaders were Mr. Clay Collier, executive Director of Christian Action Ministries of Chicago, Rev. W. lpema who works with the Chicago Orleans Housing Development, and also Mr. D. Davis, who is working at the Mile Square Medical Centre in Chicago with the Grassroots Organization. It was hoped that this years Reformation Day Rally would not simply be a student affair but a community project. The needs of the Chicago community surround us, and the purpose of the Rally was to assist us as Christians to fulfill our Christian responsibility to be activity involved in the creation. The reformation day rally. The committee prays that in some small way this years Rally has helped in the furtherance of God's Kingdom. PETE CARLSON S3 86 Y MIME ARTIST I WHITE BIRD fi, 5. TALENT SHOWS TRINITY CHRISTIAN COLLEGE Trinity didn't publish an Allelu for the 1978-1979 school year.
