The Yearbook Staff gratefully dedicates Reflections ’86 to Mrs. McGaughy Coach McGaughy keeps everyone in You’ve used that one on me before! line. Robbie McGaughy 12 Headmaster In Romans 12:5 wo read. So wo. who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. This verse indicates that each of us who knows God by trusting in His Son. the Lord Jesus, for salvation lias shared ownership in every other believer. I own. as it were, a part of you and you likewise own a part of me. We belong to each other. If I own a new hike 01 a car ora nice wardrobe. 1 will naturally want to lake care of it. If my car breaks down, for example. I will make every attempt to get it fixed, to meet its need to be repaired. In a similar way. those of us at Trinity who profess to know Cod personally own a part of each other. Logically (and obediently), then, we will want to take care of our possessions by meeting each other’s needs. That would include enlarging our groups to include those who want in. reaching out to those who are lonely or shy or hurting or a little different than we are. ask- ing forgiveness of those we know we've wronged, and confront- ing each other lovingly when the Lord so impresses us. The broader implication of the idea of belonging to each oilier includes our involvement in the community-at-large, our secondary students' participation in the STEP Project, the senior ministry project, individual students' participation in Teen Mis- sions. class and grade level involvement with Genesis I School in Mendenhall. Mississippi, and individual involvement by numbers of our students in ministry and service outside Trinity. The primary characteristics of a caring community are a will- ingness to embrace those of its own who have needs, and a will- ingness to share its energy and resources with those outside its community who have need. May the Lord motivate us to do both passionately and faithfully. Michael Beidel 14 Mike Beidel: Headmaster and calculus whiz “O Magnify the Lord ... Stan Potocki The Graduating Class of 1986: The 1985-86 senior year has been predominately one of excitement, challenge, newness, endurance, and of course, seniority. We were given added responsibilities and greater freedom. We have met the high expecta- tions which were placed upon us. As a class, our years at Trinity have been marked by special relationships, an attitude of inquisitive open learning, and a commitment to Jesus Christ. In my opinion, these characteristics are key to our future success in college and in life. My prayer is that all of us will practice what we have learned at Trinity and grow closer to Jesus Christ. The relationships we have built here are very important and meaningful. Though we will go our separate ways, these friendships will always be special to us. Their spirits were sunny and. despite the weather, the weekend was extremely heartwarming. When no particular activity was planned for the class, seniors could he found in small groups playing volleyball, canoeing, or horseback riding. In the evenings the class spent time as a group talking or playing games. On Saturday the seniors gathered by a campfire to share testimonies, thoughts, and feelings. The evening was concluded with a slideshow, some tears, a lot of laughs, and the beginning of a great senior year. First encounter with a football. A class with class. Marty makes waves. On Saturday evening, the group shared their thoughts and feelings about each other. Later that night, the games began. They have strived to work together as a unit and have en- couraged each other. On the birth- day of each sophomore, a poster was hung in the hall to wish the student a happy birthday. It was signed beforehand by his or her friends and was taken home by the birth- day person as a momento. The sophomores also sold Homecoming mums for their first fundraising pro- ject. At Christmas time, the class also got together and made special care packages for children who were victims of the earthquake. Another acitivity in which the Sophomores participated was week- ly visits to the Treemont Nursing Home. The smiling faces of the residents made the trips worthwile. Just for fun and fellowship, the class had a progressive dinner and a retreat to Pine Cove. Coach Bob Adams Season Finale! 139 Coaches’ Page Hoad Coach Hank Harmon The 1985 Varsitv Football team had a difficult start, but the season ended well for the Trojans. The season began with two defeats, yet the second game against St. Marks was a near victory. The Trojans almost achieved a come-from-behind” win but fell short as the clock ran out. TCA capped a big win over Garland Christian in the third game of the season, and the Trojans played a nearly flawless game to decisively defeat the Swordsmen. Two weeks later, tne Trojans made a spec- tacular come-from-behind” conference win over Fort Worth Christian. Our team was down 13 to 0 and ended the game with a 21 to 20 victory over the Cardinals. The highlignt of the season, however, was TCA's conference win over First Baptist Academy. Victorious over FBA, the Trojans tied with Fort Worth Nolan for second place in the conference. The team attitude verse was Philippians 2:3 which states. “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself.” The team verse was Colossians 3:23 which reads. Whatever you do. do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men. Kaeh coach contributed greatly to the team. Coach Bob King was our defensive coordinator. Coach Kyle Morrill worked with the defensive backs and the receivers. Coach Bob Adams was in charge of the J.V. defense while Coach Greg Peterson worked with the J.V. offense. Coach Rob Waples did his consistently great job as the athletic trainer. Outstanding play was exhibited by senior leaders such as Trevor Ma- jors. Wendell Harry. Stan Potocki. and Todd Williams. Captains Wendell Harry and Stan Potocki did well in their post, and Trevor Majors also did a very good job as the team chaplain. Many young players show great promise for the future. Kirk Thor as running back gained 327 yards in the final two games. Tremendous line play was exhibited by Sam Vaughan. Bob Oliver. Mike Ahlstrom. Jeff Townsend, and Brett Anderson. Sophomore Jeff Williams was able to gain experience as quarterback. Several young defensive backs played good ball: Kirk Thor. Jay Calvert. Richard Ellis, and David Burton, junior Brent Carraker made himself known as an aggressive, talented linebacker. Many honors were received by several different outstanding players. Trevor Majors was elected all-district first team, and all-state honorable mention tight end. first team all-distrct and all-state kicker, and first team all-district punter. Wendell Harry received the honor of second team all- district linebacker. Stan Potocki was elected second team all-district defensive back. Todd Williams was honored as a second team all-district guard. Juniors Sammy Vaughan. Kirk Thor, and Brent Carreker also received several first and second team honors. A Successful Season The Junior High Football Team completed another successful season by doing their best for Christ on each and every play in practice and in games. The Trojans played with a lot of desire and determination and never gave up whether ahead or Behind. The defense played well together and hit hard in keeping the opponents from scoring in over half their games. A highlight of the year was coming back to shutout Ft. Worth Country Day. 20 to 0. after being defeated the week before. Both teams had very successful seasons. The team's theme verse was Colossians 3:23. The 1985 Varsity Volleyball Team led by the experience and leadership of seniors Allyson Avinger and Kelly Frazier worked hard and effectively to finish the season on a positive note. The team’s good attitude and willingness to bond together built a special unity that became evident throughout the season. Although the season record was not our best, the girls played extremely well in district play often falling short in the end. The youthfulness and rebuilding of the team was a factor in the lack of con- fidence and consistency. Once the team’s confidence became more evident, the girls’ consistency level started to rise. Their improvement warranted many praises and compliments from opposing coaches concerning the team’s progres- sing ability. These three team members were awarded honors for their ability: Paige Nicholson — first team. Allyson Avinger — second team, and Denise Ramirez — honorable mention. Coach Martha Parker Junior High Volleyball Another Successful Season The 1985 Junior High Volleyball Team had a very- successful and exciting year. Both A and B teams went undefeated in regular season play. Thirty-nine girls were out for volleyball and all displayed tremen- dous effort, determination, and enthusiasm throughout the season which was key to their many victories. The A team was (13-2) for the year and received the second place trophy at both the Coppell and Trinity tour- naments. A Time of Growth The J.V. boys basketball team experienced a year of growth. Most of its members were freshmen: therefore, the team was a young one. They developed their skills quite well throughout the season, which should especially help the boys that will be moving up to the varsity level next year. The team was loci mainly by the duo of Jeff Majors and Alex Galloway. Although the team did not have a winning season statistically speaking, their time of learning outweighed the losses. The B-team displayed tremen- dous teamwork, enthusiasm, and unselfishness which made fora fine year. The A-team posted a 7-0 record this year. Four of the losses came by narrow margins. Varsity Girls Reach Regional Finals The girls qualified for the TAPS regionals in Houston with a 14- i record, ending the regular season on a three game winning streak. The Trojans played their pressing game against San Marcos but came up short. The girls finished third in their district, which is highly commendable considering the top two district teams were also the top two teams in the state. TCA won the Trinity Christian Cedar Hill Tourna- ment and finished second in the first TCA tourney. The girls’ desire was to honor the Lord through their example on and off the court. The team’s verse was I Corinthians 9:24. Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the' prize? Run in such a way that you may win.” The Tro- jans’ pressing defense, desire, enthusiasm, bustle, and never quitting attitude were leading factors in TCA’s success. The quality of never-giving-up best describes this year’s team. Four times they were behind by more than 12 points, but fought back to win. Much raise and thanks go to our Lord who is using us to bear His fruit. Congratulations to Beth Mikkelsen on her selection to TAPS District 1 first team, while Jackie Schimmer made second team, and Autumn Getz and Amy Chafin received honorable mention. Beth. In the second half of the season, the team picked up the pace with victories over Ft. Worth Trinity Valley and St. Marks. Tom Slocum shot 41 on the Bent Tree front nine to pace the win over the l.ions. After a brief let down at the District Tournament, the team played its most consistant golf of the year at the TAPS State Meet. For the two- day tournament. Steve Mabery and |eff Townsend had low rounds of 86 while Tom Slocum shot the low team score of 84. Sophomore Russell Brown chipped in his two best back to back scores for the year with a pair of 93’s. The final tally showed TCA in 5th out of 12 teams and only 6 shots out of 3rd place. Trojan Aces The 1986 Varsity Tennis team consisted of 18 players who bonded together develop- ing a team that once again showed dominance In our district. The competition with area public and private schools paid off greatly as a warm up for district. The team represented Trinity well with the boys finishing first and the girls improving last year's finish with second place. The accomplishments at district helped boost the team in self-confidence as well as provide competitive play. The team traveled to Waco for the State Tournament in hopes of defending last year's Championship. The results of the State Tournament found Trinity with a 13 to 13 tie. sharing the Championship with the Vanguard School. Tho Co-Championship was assured when one of our doubles team made it to the quarter finals and another to the semi-finals. The team also supported our ®2 singles player to the semi-finals round and was defeated by the State Champion. I was impressed with this year's team for their willingness to put the team first before themselves. Their hard work and devotion enabled the to defend their title as ''Champions.” The boys finished with a Conference record of 5-0 and a soason record of 11-1. There were 23 athletes who fill- ed out the roster and each of them found some way to make a significant contribution to the team effort. The entire year was a concen- trated effort to qualify for state competition and finish as high as possible in the district meet; the Trojans were runners-up at district. In the state meet the team finished 4th out of 12 teams. The significant part of the year was our team’s ver- satility. When one person was unable to compete, another prepared athlete was ready to fill in for the team. So many ac- complishments were witnessed this year that space does not allow for listing. This was a year of transition for the club, as they had new officers and a new sponsor. Under Mrs. Caldon’s leadership, the girls collected eyeglasses for those in need from underprivileged countries. The girls have baked many cookies to raise money for the Teen Missions participants. The League also hosted the Talent Show and held a blood drive for Wadley Blood Bank. The Girls’ Service League has had a profitable year and looks forward to many years of service in the future. The Saturday Night Life tradition was carried on this year by its leaders, Melanie Carl and Trevor Majors. The Saturday evening gatherings gave students a wonderful opportunity to get together and spend time with each other. The group kicked off the year with a wild and un- forgettable scavenger hunt... conducted in cars! After the hunt, many students went to Baskets for fun. food, and fellowship. Those who attended Saturday Night Life meetings were privileged to hear speakers such as Dale Talifero and John Moppen. They also did a lot of singing and laughing, and enjoyed just being together for a time of spiritual renewal. Rick, I think there’s gum on my shoe. The Writing Club is a weekl gathering of students who want to share their writing. It encourages students to develop their writing as an act of re-creation, not merely a means of communication. Poems stories, and journal entries that flow out of each person’s personal experience, ideas, and insights art read during the meetings. Wc discuss what the writing is saying and how it's being said. Occas- sionally, the writer asks for con- structive cirticism of his or hei work. While some students plan t enter careers which will involve writing, what we hold in commor is that we are all amateurs — w love writing and so we gather tc share it. They contributed to the school by helping with the operation of the library. They prepared new books, worked at the circulation desk, taught other students how to use the library, and produced audio- visual materials. Overall, they made a great contribution to the total library program. Betty Milton 193 The Wide World of... When it came to spirit, the students of Homecoming '85 pulled through. There were many activities planned by the Student Council in which the students participated. On Thursday night, a thrilling lip sync competition was held. Students and teachers did their best to imitate musical stars of today and the past. Friday, there was an ex- citing car bash and a volleyball tournament in which the different classes competed against each other. The day's activities came to a dramatic close with a “red-hot” pep rally held at the field. The students were fired-up as the cheerleaders made their memorable entrance on a fire engine. The drill team performed a fine routine, too. That evening, many alumni, and students, and parents came to support the Trojans and witness the crowning of the 1985 Homecoming Queen. Kristina Castro. For the seniors and some unhealthy underclassmen, the flight home was a breeze. Paige Belew is inducted into the NHS. 20H Valedictorian: Barbie Carpenter This past year al Trinity has been one of tremendous learning and growth both for my classmates and myself. Academically, we've learned more than we've ever learned before. We've learned to think and to interrelate the things we’ve discussed in- side and outside of class. Socially, we've developed much stronger friendships. We’ve reached out to people of all different types. Because of the busy year, the time we had together was quality time. Spiritually, we've learned a lot about Cod and what He wants from us. C. T. Studd once said. If Jesus Christ be God and died for me. then no sacrifice is too great to be made for him. The greatest gift we can give to Him is ourselves, unmold- ed. and ready for Him to use. We've learned this year that life is most fulfilling when lived with Christ as head over all areas of our lives: academic, social, and spiritual. Salutatoriam Wendell Harry I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith: In the future there will be many more courses to run. and fights to fight: yet the one I have now completed, my high school experience, is the most unique. In this time I have grown to know Cod. learned of how to learn, and discovered the benefits of diligence. I have seen, acknowledged, and absorbed countless pearls of wisdom from a faculty super-saturated with Godly, intellectual, and wise people. The difference between these past four years of growth and the future ahead of me is that yesterday. I was being reared by these Godly and wise people: tomorrow, it is my responsiblity to become one. Note: Autumn Getz received recognition as salutatorian in both the awards assembly and during the graduation ceremony. In the final tabulation of grades, however. Wendell Harry’s grade point average was .005 points higher than Autumn's. Therefore, both Autumn and Wendell are worthy of scholastic recognition. 209 D.A.R. He is very active in school activities, attending every football and basketball game, accompanying the eighth grade on the wilderness trip, and leading singing every morning in chapel. Mr. Beidel's love for Trinity and all its students is evident in his attitude toward his job. Though his schedule is a busy one. he takes time to meet with students for Bible studies or just to talk. His willingness to help any student academically or spiritually never ceases. Mr. Beidel is certainly an outstanding teacher and well deserving of this award. Stan Potocki This year’s recipient of the D.A.R. Citizenship Award is Stan F’otocki.
