REFLECTIONS TRINITY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY REFLECTIONS 1983 FACULTY 13 ACTIVITIES 189 SENIORS 33 HONORS 207 CLASSES 93 THUMBPRINT 227 SPORTS 143 ADS 231 WITH APPRECIATION The 1983 TCA Yearbook Staff wishes to dedicate this edition to Betty Milton. In 1972 Betty volunteered to help in the library. There was no library and so she was handed a library guideline and a budget. The beautiful library we enjoy today is the result of her vision, ten years of work, and her service to God and Trinity. We honor her not only for the library whose growth she has directed to approximately 11,000 titles and audio-visual aids but also for her cheerful and serving spirit. Betty Milton’s warmth and humility provide a service to each of us that reaches beyond “librarian.” She truly has a servant’s heart. WE BEGAN OUR TOMORROWS . ... YESTERDAY REACH BACK TO YOUR JOYS AND SORROWS; LOSE THEM AWAY IN YOUR MIND ... ... FOR MEMORIES ARE TIMES THAT YOU’VE BORROWED, TO SPEND WHEN YOU GET TO TOMORROW. 5 FOR HOPE SHALL BRIGHTEN THE DAYS TO COME... ... AND MEMORY GILD THE PAST. SENIORS ’83 H TODAY WE CREATE THE MEMORIES THAT WE WILL SHARE FOREVER. 9 HERE COMES THE SETTING SUN; THE SEASONS PASS ONE BY ONE ... ... SO GATHER MOMENTS WHILE YOU MAY; COLLECT THE DREAMS YOU DREAM TODAY. 11 • • • JESUS CHRIST THE SAME ... YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW. FACULTY 13 BOARD OF TRUSTEES 14 Faculty Above: 1-r, Dr. William Bell, Grover Hope, Harold Ratcliff, Bill Millet, Gerald Horn, Bo Miller, T. D. Dickey, Don Grimm, Dr. Trevor Mabery. Not shown: Charles R. Crews, Donald W. Hodges, Thomas W. Landry, Lawson Ridgeway A. WORD FROM THE HEADMASTER Trinity is distinct in at least two ways. First, because we are a private, independent school, we have the characteristics of an independent school. We have a college preparatory cur- riculum, innovation in our offerings, flexibility in our scheduling, and involvement of faculty and students which exceeds the boundaries of the classroom. We also have an emphasis in our teaching on those intellectual skills which are necessary for academic success. Secondly, we are distinctively Christian — committed to developing students whose in- tellectual, aesthetic, physical, emotional and social development is integrated in relationship to the Lord Jesus Christ. We are also becoming a community of faculty and staff, students and families whose unity is found in Him; we are committed to the authority and trustworthiness of Scripture; and we are continually exploring new ways to help meet needs of the community outside Trinity. I hope you are as excited as I am about being a part of Trinity. During this time the Trojans have gone to the playoffs five times and have been in the state playoffs once. “Coach Beane knows his stuff and has a great desire to win,” said senior co-captain Ned Heiser. “Over the years he has shown great leadership to me and others who wish to accept it.” Coach Beane demonstrates care and compassion toward all his players and shows great interest in the team as a whole. Sophomore Phil Holden describes Coach Beane as “the kind of Coach who has concern for others on the team. He is a good example to follow and look up to.” “Coach Beane is always a step ahead; he knows what the meaning of discipline really is,” says John Lovelace, a sophomore, recalling the 1982 football season. The Lord has blessed Trinity with a great athletic Coach and an all-around wonderful person. 144 Sports Top roui: Coach Beane, Coach Waples, Coach Fuller, Coach Henderson, Coach Starr, Terry Brown, Allen Compton, Second row: Phil Holden, Mike Busch, Whit Johnson, Billy Bos, Doug Reese, Gary Gibson, Steve Gibson, Stuart Cole, Alfi Scherer, Jeff Holder, Tim Mayben. Sports 145 The Year In Review Trinity started the season playing against Greenhill. Greenhill’s final season record was 7-1-1 with their only loss being to Trinity. Trinity won by a score of 36 to 3 and Darren Weatherford had 195 yds. rushing. This was an extremely good start for the opening game of the season. The mighty Trojans went on to play their second game at Wylie in front of 4000 fans. Playing a 3A high school, the Trojans went down to the last minute of play leading the game 9-7. But Wylie scored, with a minute left to play, on a 4th down pass, to win the game 12-9. It was a very exciting game. 'The Cistercian game also presented a challenge, however the Trojans played extremely well in the second half winning with a score of 30-0. One key note in this game is that the Trojans held Cistercian to minus 12 yards rushing which really says something about the mighty Trojan defense. 146 Sports i The next week the victorious Trojans went on to win over Fort Worth Nolan, which is a 4A high school. The Trojans played extremely well, scoring the first three times they had the ball, and making the score 21-0 early in the game. The Trojans played an excellent second half and went on to win 31-15. After the two previous victories, the Trojans went up against St. Marks, fighting a tough battle. Yet we ended up losing the game to the roaring lions 46-13. The Trojans bounced back the next week against Garland Christian. It was Trinity’s Homecoming and the Trojans obviously wanted to please their cheering fans as they went on to win 20-6. The crowd was about 2000 strong as the Trojans rushed for 134 yards. With the final score, Trinity was victorious. The game against Garland Christian was Trinity’s last non-district game. The Trojans not only celebrated a Homecoming victory but a victory record of 4-2. Sports 147 TROJANS VICTORY- BOUND Excitement filled the air. It was the night of the Trojan’s first district game of the season. The challenging team was FWCD. All previous attempts to gain a win over the Falcons had failed. Holding All-State quarterback Mark Vincent to only one touchdown pass for the game, T.C.A. rushed for 206 yards and passed for 58 yards as they went on to beat the Falcons 20-7. The second district game against Ft. Worth Christian held even more excitement than the game against FWCD. The Trojans had much more control of the game than the score would indicate because at one time during this game T.C.A. was ahead by four touchdowns. FWC scrambled to get back into the game as the dominating team held their lead and won the game 43-27. This game set up a 2-0 district record for the undefeated Trojans, which made for a classic battle the next week against Dallas Christian, whose district record was also 2-0. The battle was hard-fought, but the Chargers turned two turnovers into touchdowns the very first two plays that T.C.A. had the ball on offense. Stumbling, and losing their composure, the Trojans came back in the second half with a touchdown by Darren Weatherford, but it just wasn’t enough. The final score was 16-6. The confident Trojans finished their regular season of play with a grand win against the First Baptist Saints. These age-old arch rivals played a tough, exciting game, but as all the Trojans knew, Trinity came out on top, winn- ing the game 18-14. The defense played excellently with Scott Miller getting 15 tackles. The offensive high-lighter was Stuart Cole who had two touchdown catches on two consecutive offensive plays just as the first half ended. This gave the Trojans momentum going into half-time. The winning Trojans came back in the second half dominating the game more than the score would indicate. Sports 149 I TROJANS LEAVE HEARTS IN WACO As the Trojans advanced to the playoffs, excitement turned into intensity. Electricity hung in the air over Baylor Stadium in Waco, Texas. This was the Trojan’s third time in the playoffs. The defending team, Northwest Academy was a tough one. Trojan banners waved, pom-poms shook, and it seemed as though everything was red, white, and blue. This playoff was certain to be the one to go all the way, but the game lasted 14 seconds too long as the Trojans were sadly defeated 14-12. The scoreboard flashed the final score but in the heart of every Trojan we were the true winners. 150 Sports Sports 151 SENIORS T. D. The members of the team recognized God’s power and control in allowing them to win the coin toss which placed them in the TAPS regional play-offs for the fourth straight year. The team won the first-round game over Hyde Park of Austin, but were defeated in the regional finals by Garland Christian. A highlight of the season was the over- time victory over Ft. Worth Christian. The Trojans desired to honor God in their play throughout the season by using Matthew 5:16, “Let your light (witness) shine before men (teammates, opponents, officials, spectators) in such a way that they may see your good works (sportsmanship, hustle, desire, team unity) and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” TEAM HONORS TCA tied for second in TAPS District 1. The Student Council expended much time and ef- fort to create a very exciting day. 'I'he festivities began with a Hawaiian dress-up day appropriate for a beach theme. At the end of the day there was a huge pep rally complete with class yells and a skit by the drill team and varsity cheerleaders. The Student Council sponsored a contest for the best decorated wall and the senior class won. The night ended with ice cream provided by the Student Council. The hours of work paid off. Homecoming ’82 was a great success. Reflections Staff It’s 2:00 A.M. — quad-paks everywhere ... “Where’s a cropper when you need one?” “Who’s the jerk that lost the stamp?” “Do not wander in the halls, do not pass go, do not collect $200.” “This is a class like any other class” ... These are all well-known statements among the 1982-83 yearbook staff. Being on the Reflections Staff requires patience, skill, and the ability to work well with people. There is a great amount of pressure, especially before deadlines, and prayer is a must. Yet, in spite of all this, the staff has lots of fun and there is a great reward in being able to see the result of one’s work. A special word of thanks goes to Mrs. Underhill, the yearbook sponsor, Mrs. Sides, the business manager, and Mr. Linebarger, the photography director. Standing: Jennifer Jurgensen, Matt Raker, Wendy Maurer, Robin Sugg, Amity Booth, Kristy Schweinsberg, Sylvia Powers, Tracy Newberry Below: Tonnya Turner, Susan Stokes, Shelly Russell, Phil Miner 192 Journalism Staff Launches “Clarion” “The pen is mightier than the sword,” eleven high school journalists firmly believe. Armed with their pens, the members of the “Clarion” (meaning a battle cry) staff meet to keep the school in touch with the news. They take turns at interviewing, editing and covering special events. The school paper has been revived after two years of silence. The staff completed several newsprint editions of which Trinity can be proud. The “Clarion” staff includes Scott Peterson (Editor), Holly Hargis (Assistant Editor), Andrea Lyall, Martha Moock, Mike Lamb, James Davidson, Becky Grimm, Dee Hill, Dana Chiattello, Lockette Meador, Crissy Meroney and sponsor Martha Eubank. Special thanks to Audrey Sato for designing “The Clarion” banner! Activities 193 Student Council The 1982-83 school year was an active foundational year for the Student Council in which many new policies were established. The most important addition was a document which outlined Student Council responsibilities, purposes and pro- cedures. Another important policy deci- sion made by the Council was to add an ex- ecutive council of three or four people who will aid the officers in determining the agenda for meetings and in making sure the decisions of the Council are carried out. The Council also chose a faculty representative for a school disciplinary committee. Student Council planned T.C.A.’s Homecoming activities, and all- school skate, several dress-up days, and sponsored a fund-raising drive for charity. Council members also were responsible for collecting ticket money at football and basketball games. Over 100 teams participated in this years single-elimination tournament. The high point of competition came when Trinity’s “Whiz Quiz” team won a land- slide victory over Garland High School, thus qualifying for the second round of play against a very tough St. Mark’s team. Although T.C.A. lost, the team members enjoyea the chance to be filmed for a television broadcast. “Know Your Bible” is a game based on the “Whiz Quiz” concept, yet its content is taken entirely from Scripture. The team was very successful with all participants displaying both knowledge and teamwork. With the loss of only one senior team member we anticipate many exciting “Whiz Quiz” contests in the year to come. SHANNON SHANDRA BEVERLY HILLS “Whiz Quiz” team members include: Tim Daum, Eric Bryan, Terry Brown, Bart Tolleson, Bob Shahan, Randy Stevens (alternate) “Know Your Bible” team members include: Tim Daum, Eric Bryan, Bart Tolleson, Beth Werner, Scott Mills (alternate). Junior High and Senior High Choirs performed at several events this year. With all music memorized, the students sang at the Christmas program for the Women’s Bible Study group at Grace Bible Church, gave concerts at Plaza of the Americas, sang for Chapel, and participated in two choral contests. The choir’s final performance was “Heaven Help the Home,” based on the book by Howard Hendricks. The high school band had the opportunity to play for several programs, among which were the Christmas Jubilee, the PTF Ban- quet, and chapel. 198 Activities Activities 199 HANDBELLS The Junior High handbell choir delighted audiences at Sandy Lake Park, Plaza of the Americas, Grace Bible Church, and at the Southeast Region Competition this year. Play- ing classical bells, the choirs per- formed familiar seasonal favorites. The cheerful go-fers of the “Dewey Decimal Department” of Trinity are the Library Aides. These busy students provide a variety of ser- vices for students and faculty, finding and delivering books, magazines, cassettes, filmstrips, and videotapes. Want to check out a book? They’ll do it. Need help finding a reference listed in the Reader’s Guide? They’ll find it. Can’t get a filmstrip threaded properly? They can. And will. These aides man the front desk, help find, file and shelve materials, and deliver, operate, and maintain the audio-visual equipment. This is a part of T.C.A.’s expanding library facility. LIBRARY AIDES First Row: Terry Brown, Beth Werner, Allen Compton, Second Roi Tom Ziglar, Laura Williams, Robin Sugg, Doug Reese College Day The Student Council hosted 51 college representatives who came to T.C.A. to inform students about the variety of pro- grams, courses, and extras that each of their schools offer. Joining Trinity’s students and parents were, students from Evangel Temple and First Baptist Academy. The college representatives said they were impressed with the organization of the event, the number of parents attending, and the “polite, neat kids” they encountered. Activities 201 Outward Bound Last summer eleven TCA students and three sponsors headed for the New Mexico hills for a two week wilderness trip. Car- rying thirty-five pound backpacks and building their own shelters out of tarps, these hardy outdoorsmen hiked five to ten miles a day. The results? A good time and spiritual growth in the midst of struggles. First Row: Mr. Wayne Brannon, Mark Kaiser, Mr. Wendell Harris, Karen Gilmore, Dennis Hill, Debra York, Ricky Pierce, Lisa Shilds, Tim Daum, Scott Whitson Second Row: Tim Ward, Morgan Tolbert Europe Trip “Parlais vouz Francais?” No? How about “Sprechen Sei Deutsch?” Oh well, fortunately English was spoken at all the stops TCA’ers made on their tour of Europe over spring break. Visiting five major cities from London to Amsterdam to Bonn to Cologne to Paris, the group of nine- teen students and two sponsors had a busy schedule. On the itinerary were visits to a diamond factory, a perfumery and the Tower of London. 202 SKi YftiP On a crisp, cool evening in February, 150 students and 15 sponsors boarded buses and headed for Purgatory. After a brief stop in Santa Fe for breakfast the next morning, the group arrived Saturday afternoon at beautiful Tamarron Con- dominiums and deep powder. The students and faculty enjoyed 3 days of super skiing, night skiing, Bible studies, a skit night and the final episode of M A S H . Activities 203 FALL FIESTA On October 2, 1982 the annual Fall Fiesta was held at Trinity. This is an all-day family activity for all ages. Many activities take place throughout the day, such as volleyball games, a country store, a dunk tank, a cake walk, and 15 games under a large tent. The fair is an event to raise money for the Academic Council. 204 Acti' CHAPEL ’83 Excitement characterized this year’s chapel program with participation by such well-knowns as Christian singers Dallas Holm and Tim Sheppard, saxophonist Vernard Johnson, memory expert Jerry Lucas, and aerobics pioneer, Dr. Kenneth Cooper. A wide variety of area speakers as well as T.C.A. faculty and student groups rounded out a schedule that was both challeng- ing and entertaining. Dedication Ceremony Launches School Year On Sunday, August 22,1982 the dedication of Trinity’s newest building addition was held. Those in attendance were addressed by Dr. William Bell. The third grade Blue Girls presented Trinity’s headmaster, Mike Beidel with a large Bible for the new chapel. There were over 500 people in attendance at the dedication and many stayed for a reception in the cafeteria. The new building provides many needed additions, including an auditorium, cafeteria, concession stand, gym, wrestling room, art and music facilities, a trophy and artwork display area, and several classrooms. HONORS - 207 TRINITY SPIRIT AWARD This year’s Trinity Spirit Award goes to Scott Miller. The Trinity Spirit Award is an award given to a student who is a leader worthy of having followers. This person must be dependable, trustworthy, faithful, and a person of principles. Scott meets these standards and more. One teacher said about Scott, “It has been a joy to work with and teach Scott over the last six years. No student better embodies the ideals and principles that are T.C.A. May others take a hard look at where His eyes are fixed ... on Him who is Perfect, the Son of God.” 208 Honors and Recognition DAR AWARDS The Daughters of the American Revolution is a society founded to preserve America’s ideals and heritage. Honors and Recognition 225 VALEDICTORIAN SHANNON FOX In my years at Trinity, two lessons remain in my mind. The main thing is that there are always many responsibilities and assignments putting pressure on us. Because of these, many times the seemingly urgent things take up all of our time and squeeze out the important things like our time alone with the Lord, our fellowship with other Christians, or our various ministries. This is a danger I feel everyone needs to be aware of and guard against. We need to keep our priorities straight. The other thing is that the grade we make is not important. The important thing is how we use what God has given us. As long as we do our best, we please God. SALUTATORIAN: JANE BROADY — picture not available 226 Honors and Recognition THUMBPRINT Dialogue Poetry by Beth Werner Photography by Clifton DeWitt “Batter My Heart— ” Batter, break, be rough with me — The time is coming; it’s not yet here, When I’ll say those words to Thee. Step by step Thou drawest me near. Time and again I turn to You. But those words, so crucial, so hard — My heart will not release ’til what I speak is true. And, meanwhile, running, my heart is marred By thoughts which have no place In You. By You I am assured I’ll see Your face, for, by Your grace You’ve taken my place; it’s in Your Word. In this one thought I rest my faith: You, Lord, have promised to keep me safe. Beth Werner “Could you count all the books you’ve read?” “No — that would be like counting the stars — but it sure is fun to try! “Why am I so complex? Why do I have so many questions and answers that only partially satisfy me?” Because you are made in the image of a Greater Being, and. until meeting that One, will not even be fully able to understand yourself. “Why do people call me wise? old for my age?” Because you are not afraid to think and learn from other’s pasts. “What makes me me? Many things; above all, God. “Thank you.” You’re quite welcome. “Can I live with you, God?” Are you not afraid? “Yes, I am; but not uncertain.” Then come, and follow me. Beth W’erner The Dreamer' Secreta In The Wind” Still, silence captivates all; Nothing dare interrupt its beautiful prison; A time for dreaming amongst his former fathers; A way to sense nature’s melancholy tone. There ... sits the dreamer. Resting all hope on Dover Beach. Reality is only one setp away, yet only the dreamer may grasp its world. New life and meaning await him; Can’t you hear His call? The dreamer’s prison holds him firm — Its silence lingers onward. As the sea hopes in vain to end its eternal conflict, The dreamer sits wanting life to open without His key. A friend to meet; this friend called death waits for dreamer to be with him forever. Like a pit this silence holds him from the two escapes — A longing need to end his vain endeavor. The Wind draws near and listens to the dreamer’s silent prison. Love and Peace are in the air. The dreamer now has risen! Ron W. Hill Photography by Stephanie Boyd. How high can you fly? Will you take my dreams with you? For you can never cry. Please teach me to fly. How long will it be Till you share your dreams with me? Please take me along, Teach me a song. Will your world overpower me, Or will my songs awaken you? Please give me a chance, To create a romance. Shall I be frightened by love’s gentle whisper, Or will my dreams just wander away? For you are a creation whose world holds the key To making my dreams become real. Ron W.
