Too Little, Too Late A never-say-die Trinidad State bas- ketball team helped overcome mem- ories of a dismal regular season with a fine performance in the Region lX tour- nament. The Trojans slaughtered favored Nebraska Western 94-67 in the tourney opener and gave Empire Conference champion Casper a real battle before falling 79-66 in the quarterfinals. The team was saddled with problems from the beginning of the season, since there were no starters coming back from i968 and only one letterman, Jim Rapp. New head coach Gary Marriott was hired too late to do any recruiting and the nine Troians that were to stick with the squad lacked in the important factor of height. Despite competing in the best iunior college conference in the nation, TSJC was rarely ever beaten badly and scared the pants off some of the taller, more talented teams-losing half of its games by around ten points or less. The Tro- ians finished the year with a frustrating 3-24 record. Rapp led in scoring with a T7-point average, while Rayford Tillis hit T2 per game and Rick Ridgway ll. Ron Lovejoy was strong on the boards with Tillis and Rapp, while Marriott got fine efforts from guards Jerry and Gerry Nickell and Ernest Koontz, forward Rodney Brown and center Dave Newby. lc T 1
