Foundations Before Treblinka a people believed The past we hold isn't pretty in a philosophy called Nazism. A shining palace of high culture But built on quicksand. When will we learn it? The philosophy upon which we build Ultimately determines our future. Youth senses this. That's why we came here, searching For direction ' For knowledge For a philosophy that can preserve humanity And no matter how much we know, We've only begun to find it. So we're dedicated to a lifetime of searching. Our beliefs, our assumptions will determine not only our answers but even our manner of searching. Not only the decisions but also the evidence admitted. Some believe that humanity is a group of machines a product of pure chance That we are alone in the universe with only ourselves to establish truth, or law. Others believe that there is nothing one can know, or believe. For them, this silence is the only answer. Others believe, as l do, that God gave us a world to explore and enjoy a universe to explain a mind, soul and spirit equal to the task. An endless processional of black, shackled slaves A sondercommando slave shoving his own mother into the furnace at Auschwitz A thousand children in a single, filthy building A trail of broken Indian treaties An eleven year-old Girl Scout raped, killed, and stuffed into her sleeping bag for disposal. But here and there we catch a glimpse of another aspect of the human spirit That painted the walls of an ancient cave That developed an alaphabet to express a thought That built vast pyramids to house the dead That engineered Cathedrals to the glory of God That composed the music of a million scores That constructed a coast to coast highway system That sent pictures over the air waves That built a thousand hospitals and orphanages That sent humans to the moon That touched another and whispered, l love you. l care. The legacy of our human past keeps us from being either too proud, or, too humble. And how shall we mold the future? The answers we will give first depend on the questions we ask depend on our presuppositions depend on our openness. Will we find the ultimate answers? I have found some. With the answers we frame our lives upon, we will mold the future. A firm foundation outside and beyond ourselves. Manipulation, or freedom? We see Tri-State as a place for searching for questioning old answers for trying new solutions ' for seeking ultimate answers slavery, annihilation, or dignity? The choice is in the philosophy upon which we build. Before Treblinka, came a philosophy. Will our generation recognize the quicksand in time, for examining not only answers, but also questions or only after it has destroyed six million lives? We are continually excavating the roots of our past Will the answers this generation provides prove strong exploring them examining them explaining them. enough foundation to support a future world which desperately needs solutions?
