T)eparintent Of Mechanical Engineering left - right: Prof. John C. Humphries, Head of Dept.; Prof. Douglas Barton; Prof. A. V. Andolina; Prof. Ramsay Jackson; Prof. Raymond H. Hemmert. The field of mechanical engineering is es¬ sentially basic, borrowing, as it does, funda¬ mentals from all other fields of engineering, and permeating all of our present day indus¬ trial world. It would be difficult to name any field of industry in which mechanical engineer¬ ing problems are not met. These problems have their origin in the design, the manufacture, the choice, and the operation of mechanical equip¬ ment. This equipment may be used in manufac¬ turing anything from a needle to an ocean liner, or it may be used in transportation by land or sea or air. It may be used in power production, in heating and air conditioning, in refrigeration, in agriculture, in steel making or in any ofthe other phases and fields of industry. The mechanical engineer may find his work in problems involving the economic choice of equipment. With such detailed knowledge of equipment and its functions, the mechanical engineer is well fitted for the profession of sales engineering. Works management is another field in which the mechanical engineer often specializes. Indeed the basic nature of a good mechanical engineering course, can be said to form the ground work for many types of work in al most any industry. MECHANICAL LABORATORIES

' Department Of Kadio Engineering The technical course in Radio En¬ gineering is methodically arranged to include only essential subjects. The curriculum embraces instruction by text book lecture, laboratory drafting, and designing practice. The Radio En¬ gineering graduate is expected to possess a mastery of radio circuits and apparatus, as well as all those fundamental sub¬ jects which form the basis for professional engineering prac tice. In order that the student be able to gain a real knowledge of Radio Engineer¬ ing and its various phases, he must have a thorough appreciation of physi¬ cal theory, a clear understanding of chemical principles, and a broad working knowledge of mathematics. This training is accomplished in the class rooms through lectures and home study. It is imperative, however, that this work be supplemented with extensive laboratory practice and report writing.
