Great governments have come and goneg great empires have risen to sublime heights and then fallen into oblivion only because the citizenry could not assume the responsibility placed upon it. Today we are living in an age of science. Some would have us believe that our obligation to society can be fulfilled through scientific methods. You who are going out into the world of competition have been trained to apply sound logic to the solution of all problems, and you must assume the responsibility and accept the obligation of trying to make this country the guiding light of the world in this hour of dark- ness. You are challenged to contribute your efforts and talents to the preservation of democracy for free people by applying your knowledge and training in whatever field of service you are called upon to direct we wish for the members of the graduating class of l9b9 all of the success that it is humanly possible to attain. The Tri-State College Printing Shop was organized in 1937 at which time the school purchased one 7x11 Chandler-Price hand-fed Platen Press and a few fonts of foundry type. The next year Roy C. Bodie was placed in charge of the shop. Since that time the undertaking has grown into a modern printing shop which includes an automatic Miehle Vertical Press, two Platen Presses Q7x11 and 10x1Sj, one offset press, one automatic power cutter, an automatic stitcher and an automatic 17x22 Baum folder. In the spring of 1948 the original one room was expanded to cover the entire west half of the Administration building's first floor. The extra space and modern equip- ment enables the College to do nearly all of its printing. It also provides steady em- ployment for an experienced printer and three assistants as well as part-time work for a number of college students. Besides printing, the shop personnel has charge of the alumni file, directs student housing, and acts in an advisory capacity for student publications. PRINT SHOP SCENES Roy C. My of ,pf kn...J i kt The objectives of the Society are to promote good fellowship, furnish an oppor- tunity for students to develop leadership, and to disseminate technical information of interest to student engineers. These objectives are accomplished through meetings con- ducted wholly by and for the students which are held on the campus three Wednes- days a month. Much valuable information is obtained from listening to speakers engag- ed by the Society at frequent intervals. These men are experts in their field and fur- nish the student an insight as to what lies beyond graduation. In addition, at nearly every meeting a short movie depicting some phase of engineering is shown. OFFICERS EDWIN A. ANDERSON, Svvrciary ,,,.' It is their Society organized by and for them. Activities during the past year included speeches from outstanding technicians in the Radio Engineering fieldg as well as talks by men in such positions as the depart- ments of large corporations afforded much valuable information to the Society mem- bers. The most notable achievement of the Radio Engineering Society during the past year was its reorganization under a new constitution which Was Written during the fall term. An especially exciting event attendant upon these meetings was the gathering in the ham shack of a number of students and professors to observe the Television programs. Those of us who are graduating give those members remaining strict charge to maintain the high standards and ideals of our Society, so that in the years to come we may look with genuine pride upon our Society. F STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS JOHN OFHARE, Treaszwm' CARLO MARTINEZ, Secretary DONALD CREEDMAN, President CHARLES WITT, Vive Presidefzf The Student Council is an organization made up of students to promote such cam- pus activities as dances, inter-collegiate sports, election of senior class officers, and other activities that will benefit the student body. It is the voice of the students, expressing their views to the college and the public. The Council is composed of two members from each student organization on cam- pus. It is the duty of these members to attend all meetings, participate in Council ac- tivities, and to report to their organizations any and all progress that has been attained. Although this last year has brought about a greater and better Student Council program than any in the past, there are even higher hopes for the future. 6 Slacfenl' Gaunci STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES HARRY D. During the summer term the Skull and Bones was occupied with internal organi- zation and at the end of the term inducted 13 new members. Honorary members elect- ed were Theodore Wood, J. Glenn Radcliffe, and Bill Sunday as faculty advisors. Skull and Bones in its ideals is to recognize outstanding student leadership in extra- curricular activities, to promote student activities by encouraging students to become active in at least one campus organization, to promote student spirit and brotherhood and, iinally, to promote to the highest degree the traditions, honor, and prestige of Tri-State College. Four years later, Phi Lambda Tau having grown apace with the leading fraternal organizations on the campus decided to merge with the national fraternity, Alpha Delta Alpha. After the disbandment of the Alpha Delta Alpha in 1935, members petitioned the national executive oflicer of the Alpha Kappa Pi for a charter which was received in November of 1935. Alpha Kappa Pi prospered for the next eleven years and then on September 6, 1946, a consolidation was effected with another great national fraternity, Alpha Sigma Phi. Standing for charity, culture, loyalty, patriotism and perpetual friendship, mem- bers face a future made bright by the fire of personal development which has always been kindled within the walls of Alpha Sigma Phi. x .4 if , wlliix JOHN ACKER GERARD B. The origin of this organization dates back to 1921 when it started its activities as the Club Hispana-Americana composed totally of Spanish-American students attending Tri-State College. After six years of existence, it was registered under the laws of the State of Indiana as the Alpha Chapter of Gamma Eta Alpha fraternity. An intensive movement begun by this organization culminated in fusion with the Phi Lambda Alpha fraternity as the Eta Chapter. On December 26, 1931 during our annual convention, the Phi Lambda Alpha merged with the Sigma Iota to form the present Phi Iota Alpha fraternity of which we are the Iota Chapter. The aims are to foster a better sense of duty and study among the members and to create that Latin atmosphere which is an integral part of far-away homes of the mem- bersg constantly striving for that great ideal, the ultimate goal: The political and economical union of all Latin-American countries. The ideals and the characters of the founders of this fraternity were of the highest quality, the wisdom and sincerity imbued in this fraternal body by these men has burned a traditional flame in the hearts of all brothers. Dehnite leadership in all fields has been shown in the years gone by and will continue in the future, as long as our neophytes are taught the high moral, traditional, and brotherly standards, perpetuated by the original leaders of Sigma Mu Sigma. Even with the most valiant efforts of the loyal members, the national crisis of the 193O,s forced this fraternity to become inactive. It was reactivated in 1940 through the efforts of the alumni. The Board of Directors of the College ofhcially recognized the organization on February 2, 1938. The society progressed from its humble beginning and in the fall of 1939 became the Theta Mu Pi fraternity. Theta Mu Pi flourished with the years until early 1942 when due to the exodus of its members into the armed ser- vices, the activities of the fraternity were interrupted. The return of previously active members to the campus brought about the reactivation of the fraternity during the sum- mer term of 1946. The aim of Theta Mu Pi is to foster the educational, social, and spiritual life of its members. During the Winter term of 1949 Theta Mu Pi elected to inaugurate another chapter into the fraternity. The original chapter shall be the Alpha chapter and shall be composed of members of Jewish faith. The new chapter shall be the Beta chapter and shall be non-sectarian. At sports events a rousing march is often followed a by a light fantasy in boogie-Woogie or jazz, which delightfully proves that there are no Squares in the outnt. il .I i 6, 'l lu, l 3 i I 14 I 1 l I 1 la il in if: 5 if in iff EN. ls Ili ri ilg 'r I - cz, 31 ff - ff ri, 5 S 1- Xsxn - AQ! The initial turnout was small but it was quite evident that the group was enthusiastic. The summer term was spent in outlining the aims of the club and the rules and regulations by which it should abide. It was agreed that the club would welcome students, faculty members and townspeople as members - to boost athletics at Tri-State. There would be no dues and the only membership requirement would be to have an interest in promoting Tri-State sports program. Divine, over- came many difficulties last season to field a team that showed a definite and steady improvement as the season ad- vanced. These men put on a great show, playing fast and hard every minute of every gameg and the fans displayed much more spirit. There were also bigger crowds and higher gate receipts than in previous years. The Engineers played such outstanding teams as Lawrence Tech, Wabash College, Assumption College and others. Tri-State will continue to schedule worthy oppo- nents - and all concerned are hoping and working for an even better showing in the won and lost column during the coming season. r ROBERT J - 1 HEMRICK 1, y W ,Q ' 99 ' 5 JDK ' vii N 'En 'lv Ep , 1 I Banda!! The baseball team, under Coach Bob Divine, is looking forward to the forthcom- ing season with a great deal of anticipation. A large number of men turned out for spring tryouts, making competition keen for all positions. Facilities have been made available for indoor practice, thus enabling the team to get an earlier start and dodge bad weather. With the revised coaching staff and good material to work with, Tri-State is going to field a good team this year. STANDING! The Fall term found the fencing enthusiasts of Tri-State hard at work recruiting new members and following an intensified training program. The resulting team defeated Illinois Tech and Highland Park College and lost very close decisions to Lawrence Tech and the Univer- sity of Detroit. Tri-State can well admire the Buccaneers for their sportsmanship and teamwork. Due to the supervision of Faculty Advisor Ben D. Sel- fridge and combined efforts of the individuals on the squad, Tri-State is justly proud of its fencers. . , L BEN SELFRIDGE Coach r 'G v 'X 35 S O' - 760064 J1-Tl O.
