Today a daily plunge is the rule. But in the Classical club affairs are deplorable. Caesar, Vergil, and Cicero have the privilege of only one bath yearly. ln Ianuary, the three Romans are thoroughly and none too gently removed of the grime of 365 days. A lowly scrub bucket furnishes their bath tub. With toothbrushes Vergil's curls are restored to their former whiteness and Caesaris bald spot is tenderly cleansed. Respectable once more, they are restored to their posts. They have no desire to be modern. Une bath per year is enough for them. Of course, taking a spill while skiing is getting rather close to Mother Earth, but that's not what they Want. Their ambition is to hail each bug and bird familiarly by its first name. Those members who are zealous would-be ornithologists arm themselves with binoculars and hasten by daWn's early light to Oglebay where they may follow in the footsteps of the famous Mr. Brooks. Others, less inclined to early rising, glean their knowledge of Winged vertebrates from lectures and bird books. They use different methods, but they get practically the same result. They're getting closer to nature. NATURE CLUB ' if ii? ' LES GRENDUILLES Les Grenouilles may help its members a lot, but it's helping the postage revenue of France and United States a lot too. The mail of both countries must be palpably heavier with the French correspondence that rushes back and forth across the Atlantic. Hitler may take all Europe and all sorts of international crises may occur, and yet the feminine French club members still await, with palpitating hearts, the latest missives of their French heart-throbs who write such charming letters. They may have to use a dictionary to decipher their mail, or they may have to use a translator, which is embarrassing occasion- ally, but itis still romantic. It's a sort of Lonely Hearts' club on an intellectual basis. And besides the romantic interest, think of all the international good-will it builds up! --225 49 Ere- 11 MODEL CLUB There are thousands of everything in the world, including airplane models. To an average Triad an airplane model is an airplane model-they all look alike. Only a connoisseur of airplane models can de- tect and explain the minor details which distinguish a Spad from a SES. All Model club members are expert in that line. To the amazed onlooker they give detail after detail building up irrevocable proof that this or that is a Lock- heed Vega. They pore over mysterious diagrams, patiently glue together minute bits of Wood with some terrible-smelling glue, and eventually have an- other model airplane. Sometimes they get ambitious and build a gasoline model. Perhaps one of them will get excited some day and build a real one. - eil 50 ll? ' STUDENT COUNCIL Every government has its unemployment prob- lem, including the Student Council. Congress worries about those millions of unemployed. The Student Council worried about occupation for those 1000 stu- dents Who threatened to raze the building every noon in their attempt to find amusement. But everything- almost-has changed. Breathless students pore over the adventures of their favorite heroes in the library while the boys' study hall has become an arena for mighty battles over Chinese Checker boards and domi- noes. Some barbarous students still insist it's more fun to turn the halls into a shambles, but there are always radicals and W. P. A. In a panic they rush from third floor to basement and back to second, hunting a room probably in the Annex. They've heard awful tales about what happens if you're late to class and just when the halls begin to look deserted, along comes a Girl Reserve. A glimmer of hope lights the eyes of the freshman. Having gleaned the much needed in- formation he rushes off to the right room at last. And his guardian angel hunts out another forlorn lost soul and guides him on his way, perspiring but on time. - all 52 231- W ln the Annex is the temple of the aborigines-that is, the Annual staff-and they worship reverently a green cabinet overflowing with the priceless treasures, which, during a year's time undergo a magical metamorphosis, and emerge as a full- fledged Annual. At times the cupboard reveals an appalling neatness, rapidly remedied by the natives, who admire the Old Curi- osity Shop and proceed accordingly. Cameras and snapshots hob-nob with subscription pads and ancient annuals. ln this Annual hash there are the ingredients of a book, and eventually, after being unscrambled, there is a book. Others may fail, but if a certain snapshot just has to be here or a write-up there, some Annual member dashes to the cabinet with the unerring instinct of a bird dog, and although it may be an hour or a day, he gets what he goes after. ANNUAL STAFF 53 gag Founded in 1925, the hand since then has given an oppor- tunity to over 500 boys to strut around in uniforms and make as much noise as they please without being reprimanded. Perhaps in recent years they haven't quite dared to strut much since there was always the chance that the uniforms might fall apart, hut now with the new uniforms there is no such danger and they may hedazzle the feminine eye as much as -they please. And while their uniforms may have gone to pieces, they continue to blow and hang out their overtures and marches as lustily as ever. They've even gone radical enough to play 'LAlexander's Ragtime Band. VVho knows, perhaps someday they may even hold Il iam session. -fil 54 ls BAN D GRCHHSTRA 1 Most Triads are uneducated in the matter of music- that is, the classical variety, A combination of Benny Good- man and the Wolverine Blues is enough to cause a stampede among the jitterbugs, but if there's any difference between Chopin and VVagner they wouldn't know it. To the orchestra thats a deplorable state of affairs and as zealous reformers they take up the burden of teaching Tri- adelphia the art of enjoying the three B's-Beethoven, Bach, and Brahams-and most of the rest of the alphabet too. With carefully selected and interpreted morsels of Herbert, Dvorak, Schubert, and Strauss, they attempt to foster a passion for classical music in the impressionable minds of high school students. The green table, siren of the third floor, lures lettermen, subs, subdebs, and grinds with its gay tune. They crowd about, Watching with hypnotic stare the smashing drives, the delicate close shots, as two life-or-death opponents smack the ball with deadly aim, burning up 312 calories per hour. In this infinitesimal ex-broom closet, working in total darkness, they wield their mysterious pans and chemicals, turning out such surprising results as those of medieval alchemists in their search for the compound of gold. Ordinary mortals would find the adventure quite harrow- ing, what with no light and heaven knew what hiding there. Of course, not many ghosts or mice could get in a room holding only two people, and that with considerable crowd- ing. But these queer people enjoy it.
