When we hear the phrase The Competitive Edge we are usually reminded of sporting events where one team may have a distinct advantage because they are playing on their home field or home court. That advantage, of course, is nothing mysterious since the home team has reaped the benefit of constant practice or training in the environment in which the game is played. In any endeavor or activity familiarity always provides a distinct advantage. So it is that we say that vocational graduates always enjoy the competitive edge in whatever your choice of career may be because, unlike many other high school graduates, you are very familiar with the work environment. Not only have you attained the necessary skill to do whatever your job demands but additionally you have learned well how to succeed and progress in the workplace. The realization that one must follow directions, subscribe to rules and regulations, be respectful to others, maintain good attendance and respond promptly are habits that you have developed after four years of practical experience at Tri-County. The great majority of your competitors in the workplace will not have had that advantage and will need to take valuable time to master practical skills and to practice favorable on-the-job behaviors. They will not enjoy the advantage that you have because, until graduation, their learning had been strictly theoretical and the workplace will be new to them. Whereas, your familiarity with the entire scope of the work environment makes it your home court - and therein lies the competitive edge - please use it to your advantage. Congratulations and on behalf of all faculty and staff at Tri-County - thank you for having been with us. 2
