Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1983 volume:

The Tri-County Summit The Summit is the highest peak on a mountain. It is the place every mountain climber wants to get to. In order to reach the summit the climber must work and sweat. He or she must use skills that have been learned, and by making mistakes, learn new skills. The climber must go on in spite of pain, weariness, and many setbacks. What is the reward? To get to the top. To get above the crowd and see the beauty of the world, and to know you earned every breathtaking sight you see. Learning is no easy task, either. It is work. It is tiring. It can be painful, and it often has setbacks. To achieve, a student must overlook all of this. He or she must keep climbing . ” What is the reward? Knowledge. Knowledge that enables the student to rely on himself and what he knows to get where he wants to go. Knowledge that enables the student to question those who would take away the rights of an unaware population. Knowledge that puts the student above the crowd where he can see the breathtaking sights that only the enlightened mind can see. Does receiving a High School Diploma mean you have reached the Summit? It means you have reached a Summit. But as every good climber knows, there's always another, more challenging peak to conquer. Good luck Graduates. May you always conquer the Summits that challenge you. Cover design by Jerry Thomas. Commercial Art. Book Title, The Summit, contributed by Rob Wyman. 4%, 'S' o V V NP , 9 'o ''s f s At some point in our lives most of us come into contact with another person who is truly unforgettable. For those of us who are fortunate enough to know him, John T. Lane is that person. His commitment to the dignity of labor is surpassed only by his dedication to personal and human dignity. He taught us that authority and discipline can be helpful, that humility can be strength, that we can cooperate in a competitive situation, and that temporary failure will spur us on to greater success; and he taught us the real meaning of pride. We thank you, Mr. Lane, for exposing us to the most important trade of all - that of human relations. Best wishes for a happy and active retirement. - Class of 83 4 Air Conditioning Refrigeration 6 auto body Fronts G. Healy, S. Downing, M. Amiro, R. Anderson, T. Hehir. Rear: Mr. Spargo, J. Dalton, M. The staff is small, so the amount of work for each person was great. Many lay-outs were done by Patty Branco, Mike Maher and Connie Donovan. Photographers Helen Lawrence and Brian Mathis were invaluable. Many ads were sold by Kim Osowiecki, Carl Erikson, Cindy Lucas and Pam Morsehead. The cover was designed by Jerry Thomas. I want to thank these people, particularly the loyal few who came to nearly every meeting. Their work was a great help to me, and their humor and earnestness a great encouragement. M.E. D’ESpinosa 85 OKTOBERFEST The Culinary Arts Seniors have undertaken an adventure this year. They are presenting a National Cuisine Day each month in the Rainbow Room. Each month a country is chosen. The students research the foods of this country, and find recipes they would like to prepare. The menu is decided, and the food ordered. Next, the Seniors plan decorations for the Rainbow Room which will add to the atmosphere of the restaurant. The first National Cuisine Day featured German foods. The seniors presented an Oktoberfest which presented over fifteen German dishes from Thine Carrots to Kartoffle Klosse. The Oktoberfest was designed after the first Oktoberfest which took place in Germany in 1810, in Munich’s Festival Meadows. The main attraction was beer, food and fun. Oktoberfest was a party for all! The Oktoberfest at Tri-County succeeded in being fun as well as an adventure in foreign dining. There are varius levels of certification for operating HAM radios, each level requiring that the operator master certain skills. To be licensed at different levels a person must pass a written test. Soccer games and a Cross- Country meet. The Cheerleading Squad worked hard to become good athletes who showed they were proud of their Tri-County Teams, their school, and their squad. They worked hard to lift the spirits of team members throughout the season. Coach Gomes, a former Tri-County student, felt that this was a great squad to work with, and greatly appreciated the girls’ hard work. 93 O c O v UO The Cross-Country team had its most successful season ever during 1982. The team's accomplishments included two trophies, two championship banners and superlative individual performances. The team posted a 1-2 final record and came within one point of being undefeated in Colonial League competition. Their one league loss meant a share of the Colonial League title and the Co-Champions Banner. The team proved their superiority, however, by triumphing in the Fnd-of-the-Year League Championship Meet. The team came away with the winner’s trophy and banner, a first for a Tri-County Cross-Country Team. For the third year in a row, the team took home the Franklin Trophy, defeating cross-town rival Franklin High School in their dual meet. The team accomplishments were made possible by some very impressive individual performances. Co-Captain Juniors Charlie Huidobro and John Houlihan ran 1-2 all year. Charlie won eight out of ten races during the year. He was undefeated in league competition beating 32 other runners in the championship meet. John was right with him all year, finishing third in the championship meet. Charlie and John, along with Sophomore Mike Houlihan, were named Colonial League All-Stars. Sophomore Craig Jordan and Senior John Gokey were consistent point scorers. The supporting cast of Sue Goulet, Dennis Akroyd, Robert McCormick, Paul Butts, Tony Dastoli, Paul Wilson, Billy Donnell and Farley Rezendes all contributed greatly to the successful 1982 season. Led by Co-Captains Bruno Gianelli and Todd Bryda, the team posted a 4-8-3 record, scoring 30 goals and giving up 45. Junior Mike Steinborn led the Cougars with 14 goals and 6 assists. Senior John D’Agostino was named Most Valuable Player. He and Mike Steinborn were voted to the Colonial League All-Stars. Senior Bruno Gianelli and Junior Mike Cobb earned Honorable Mention. Letters were presented to seniors John D’Agostino, Todd Bryda, t Bruno Gianelli, Joe Nuovo, Dave Fisher, Dave Smith and Tom Jones. Many Juniors also received letters. Hopefully, they will return next year to lead our team to another exciting and successful season. Front Row Left to Right: G. Dwyer. M. Albee, M. St. George, B. Gianelli (Co-Captain), T. The team is only two years old, and this season it grew closer together as a team. The girls worked hard at every practice, never losing morale. Many of the players improved their skills as individuals as well as team members. Tri-County should be proud of this hard working team. Even though, at times, the scoreboard displayed ”0”, in spirit the team never lost a game. Front Row Left to Right: C.A. Gleason, C. Yancy, M. Erikson, L. Stoddard, P. Weidman. This is the most competitive league in the state. Tri-Valley teams generally take top spots in state competitions. The Tri-County Indoor Team has had many accomplishments in this league. Two important personal goals were achieved by Senior, Chris Charette and Junior, Charles Huidobro. Chris brought home an award for the Shot Put in league competition. Charlie brought home an award for the Mile in this meet. Coaches Hichborn, Sloane and LaVoie have a great deal to be proud of in this team and the effort it puts into being truly a class act. I. _ 101 In 1982-83 the Tri-County Girls’ Basketball Team had to look for satisfaction beyond wins and losses. The team joined the more powerful Mayflower League and finished with just one win. That victory was a close and exciting 40-37 contest with the Norfolk Agricultural School. The strength of the team was due mainly to three very productive and outstanding players, Candy Bryda, Amy lltzsch, and Lu Ann Cormier. This group led our team in nearly all categories. Candy was our leading rebounder. Amy, a four year veteran, provided scoring and leadership. Lu Ann, a good ball handler and play maker, was easily our most improved player. Other letter winners who contributed were Donna Lester, Erin Erickson, and Carol Ann Gleason. Though we did not win many games, there are only two starting seniors and several capable younger players on this year’s team. These younger players will improve and make positive contributions in the next few years. s «s 103 a s e t b I I The boys Basketball team consisted of an enthusiastic group of individuals who were not willing to stop trying regardless of the opposition met during the season. The spirit of the team was kept alive with contributions from seniors Frank DeMase, Brian Fisk, Keith Jaros, Dennis Begin and Charlie Butts. Underclassmen also contributed in important situations, and worked to improve their skills for next year’s team. The J. V. team also showed great spirit and worked hard to develop skills that will contribute to a future season of great basketball at Tri-County. f -i 'v -y a 34 H 104 m Fronti G. Dwyer, J. Krula. S.
