A Cappella at General Assembly Is there no seat for Jan? GENERAL ASSEIVIBLY The sixteenth General Assembly and conventions of the Church of the Nazarene convened in Portland, Ore- gon, in June, 1964. The Assembly opened with a communion service with 21,000 present. This was theblargest gathering in the history of the Church of the Nazarene and of the Port- land Coliseum. Included in the General Assembly and conventions were the following: Dr. George Coulter, former Execu- tive Secretary of the Department of Foreign Missions, was elected General Supt. Dr. E. S. Phillips was elected Executive Secretary of the Department of World Mis- sions, succeeding Dr. Coulter. Mrs. Gordon Olsen was elected President of the General N.F.M.S. Rev. John Hancock was elected N.Y.P.S. President. He is the first from the southeast zone to serve in this capacity. Re-elected was Mr. Paul Skiles, Secretary of the Gen- eral N.Y.P.S. Also, one of the major decisions of the General As- sembly was the authorization oftwo new Nazarene colleges on the junior level. The theme of the next quadrennium was proclaimed by the inspirational platform banners: In The Power of the Spirit-Preach, Teach, Live, Win. 19 Fun on the bus in Portland Stop-off for refreshments.
