TREVECCA NAZARENE COLLEGE NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE Bess Kirby • Editor Joe Moses • Business Manager From these roots of Trevecca Nazarene College go forth lives that are exemplary of wisdom, lives that are examples of true worship, lives that are triumphant because they have found their place in the world, and lives that fit because they know the real meaning of togetherness. Everywhere Trevecca students can be found as their lives blossom in the tumult of the seasons . . . Jrom JlieSe J ooIa . • . Gold, or the value of what is equivalent to gold, lies at the root of wisdom. With the devoted lives of our faculty members used in personnel services, counseling, and classroom teaching, out of this root are developing useful lives to be of service in all phases of life. Wisdom is an important characteristic to keep in mind when molding a young life. I rxi rAi k H vsa i s mi fiiili Worship is transcendent wonder. From the root of worship bud blossoms of prayer, song, and care for others. One major organization which exemplifies this root is our Christian Workers Association. From this root characteristics of Christian Character can be developed to help make a well-rounded young person. The reward of a thing well done is to have done it. Triumph is honor received for work well done by one ' s own choice. Sports, clubs, and extra-curricular activities all play an important part in the ripening process of a bud into a beautiful flower which is character- istic of a well-prepared youth. Together we stand; divided we fall. With the spirit of cooperation which is so prevalent at Trevecca, the students portray lives of helpfulness to be used as pastors, missionaries, teachers, nurses, doctors, and social workers. DR. A. B. MACKEY, President of the College THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE The wisest thing in the world is the search for wisdom. It has been said that wisdom is the right use of knowledge; it might well be said that wis dom is the right use of any good thing whether it be knowledge, skill, wealth, talent or time. Solomon was called a wise man because he did not ask God for wealth nor for the destruction of his enemies but for wis- dom to rule his people. Because he did not ask for those minor things, the Lord gave them to him. The twin sister to wisdom is worship, and true worship is the worship of the true and living God. Worship is the recognizing of a true evaluation. Worship should be a chang- ing something — it should develop as we become wise enough to recognize more and more the true worth of godliness and righteousness. Trevecca Nazarene College should seek to develop a greater and greater appreciation for the value of true worship; not necessarily the special times of worship, but a worshipful prayer that never ceases. This annual should be a representation of the togetherness which characterizes the highest type of education. Education is not an individualistic affair; it must be a group enterprise. The Bible teaches that two working together can put to flight ten times as many as one working alone. The cooperative pro- gram in school should be the beginning of a cooperative program which should extend throughout our lives and to the ends of the earth. Wisdom, worship and togetherness will bring daily triumph to the participants and a final triumphant entry into an eternity of peace and happiness. A. B. MACKEY, President THE MACKEY STORY Wisdom garnered from more than forty years of teaching and administration and from the workings of an agile mind has been a treasure that President A. B. Mackey has shared in countless ways with the students who have come within the portals of Trevecca. The seeds of success were planted when as elementary teacher, high school teacher, principal, college instructor, dean, and college vice-president he formed an acquaintance with the many aspects of education. Added to this were college and graduate work in economics, educa- tional psychology, and educational administration beyond that usually required for a doctor ' s degree. This experience gave valuable training for the immeasurable service he has rendered to the cause of Christian education. Worship of God, he has taught us, by both precept and example, must include a life of maximum service. The sense of mission and devotion to a cause so desperately needed in the troubled world has certainly been exemplified by this good man. Education for some purpose has been his goal. Holiness educational evangelism is his phrase to picture what Trevecca is emphasizing in order to enlarge the bounds of the Kingdom and cope with the problems of our civiliration. Triumph has been his, but only after years of sacrifice to perpetuate a college being tried in the crucible of adversity. The day has come when, under his guidance, Trevecca Naz- arene College has achieved an enviable standing in the edu- cational world with a campus valued at one and a half million dollars. These resources, together with the staff he has selected, send forth Nazarene youth in ever-increasing num- bers to lead satisfying and useful lives. President and Mrs. A. B. Mackey and their nephew, Gene Dalton Togetherness implies a close relationship between pres- ident and students possible only in a college the size of Trevecca. The weekly chapel messages, the willing counsel, and the frequent associations make possible a sharing of the thought and spirit of our president which has value beyond calculation. To you, Dr. Mackey, we of the Trevecca family wish to express our deep appreciation for your rich contribu- tion to our college and pledge ourselves to be indeed sons and daughters she ' ll be proud of. Your influence has strengthened such an aspiration. WE DEDICATE THE 1961 DARDA • To one whose life exemplifies the standards of the college. • To one who is understanding, and has the ability to make every student feel welcome. • To one who, in all the seriousness of her job, never loses her sense of humor. • To one who is a graduate of the college, and who left an enviable record behind her. • To one whose Christian living will always be an inspiration to all who know her. • To you, MISS EULA JEAN STEPHAN THE ROOT OF WISDOM • ADMINISTRATION • DIVISIONS OF DEPARTMENTS • FACULTY AND STAFFS • OFFICE ASSISTANTS • LIBRARY • PERSONNEL SERVICES • CLASSES ADMINISTRATION The administrative staff of Trevecca Nazarene College is composed of the Board of Trustees, President, Dean of Arts and Sciences, Dean of Religion, Dean of Students, Dean of Admissions, Registrar, Librarian, Business Manager, Field Representative, and High School Principal. THE MACKEY LIBRARY Standing in honor of one who has devoted his life to Trevecca is our new library, which is to be dedicated in June, 1961. This, the newest of our buildings, is named in honor of President A. B. Mackey who has set goal after goal for our college and then worked hard to reach each goal he had set. The Mackey Library will consist of three floors. The ground floor, for the present, will house temporary faculty offices, a large classroom, additional stacks space, and an informal room with kitchenette for faculty and faculty groups. The main floor provides space for a large reading room which will seat one hundred and eleven. There will be eleven individual study tables. Beyond this room will be found the stacks area in which are eight study carrels. The circulation desk, with reserved book section adjoining, will be accessible from the lobby. Opposite the stacks at the south end of the building will be the staff room, offices for the librarians, work area and storage space. The second floor has the periodical reading room with seating space for seventy-eight. There are also rooms for music listening equipment, historical material on Trevecca and the Southeastern Zone, and conferences. Addi- tional stacks area will occupy a large portion of this floor. The entire floor area will have more than twenty-two thousand square feet of space. MRS. A. B. MACKEY A B . M.A., B.S. in L.S. Librarian The MacAey Library PROFESSOR WILLIAM JERNIGAN A.B., B.D. EDWARD LAWLOR Secretary of Evangelism of the Church of the Nazarene On November 16-17 Trevecca Nazarene College, with the cooperation of the Department of Evange- lism and the twelve districts of the Southeastern Zone, presented the quadrennial program, Evange- lism First. The speakers were Dr. V. H. Lewis, Dr. Edward Lawlor, and the twelve district superintend- ents of the Southeast. In this conference there was a spiritual mandate. Our speakers reminded us that this is our hour and that we must win souls now. These words were not the pleas of those inaugurating a program. They were the cry of burdened souls for lost men and women. STUDENT COUNCIL The student government for our school is the Student Council. It has a vital part in directing campus affairs, both as a study governing body and as an advisory council to the faculty. The activities at the beginning of the school term in September are supervised by the student council members. They have an active committee that enforces the traffic laws and registers all campus cars. They sponsor all student elections, including those for the major officers who are elected in the spring. This is usually a lively campaign. The Student Council also emphasizes the spiritual aspect when they choose a layman for the annual Student Council Lectures. They have charge of all class and club activities. They, along with the faculty council committee, choose a Class and Club of the Year. They also select individual awards. These are deter- mined by points of merit. This is a very responsible job and the Council takes its work seriously. The Council is sponsored by Dr. Homer J. Usually when we think of a yearbook, we think of the past school year ' s activities. To be even more specific, we wonder what main theme could represent the year ' s activity. Usually the editor and, at times, the staff mem- bers decide what they think is a logical theme for the year ' s work. This year the theme of Roots grew out of the fact that trees grow from roots. And so we know that out of environ- ments of wisdom, worship, triumph, and togetherness grow stable Christian men and women of tomorrow. We, the staff members of this year ' s DARDA, hope that through these pages you may ever remember that what we are tomorrow is a result of our environment today. The year began with a new boom in enthusiasm and each society ' s making claim on football, basket- ball, and softball championships. It is exciting to watch the societies battle for the trophy each season. Along with these sports the T.A.A. has volleyball, shuffleboard, and tennis games for students athleti- cally inclined in those areas. The T.A.A. is a well-organized society with sports of interest going on throughout the entire year. 98 ATHLETIC SOCIETIES ALPHA SOCIETY The Alphas elected Bob Cook as their society chairman. They looked forward to maintaining their championship title in football but were eased out of that position by the Beta Society. Their fine performance made this claim a struggle for the Betas. BETA SOCIETY Beta is derived from the second word in the Greek alphabet, but this does not mean that they are in second place in society ranking. Proof of this is the fact that they won the 1960-61 football championship. To show that they were really en- thusiastic this year, the cheerleaders sponsored a banquet in honor of the Beta football team. Jimmy Stocks headed the Beta Society this year and was very capable in his position. DELTA SOCIETY In the past years the Delta Society has been at the top of the list, but this year they have had a bit of trouble holding their rank. The loss of a few leading players did not help them in the least. But in basketball they are moving to the top. Leading the team to the top again is Byron Dollar, captain of the team, and Charlie Kirby, chairman of the society. 99 ALPHA FOOTBALL With four cheerleaders, much excitement, and an experi- enced team the Alphas began the football season to main- tain their last year ' s championship. Bob Cook, captain, led the team through the season in the close race with the Beta team. BOB COOK Captain of the team Alpha Football Team ALPHA CHEERLEADERS, left to right: Cindy Chesley, Lois Kolar. The deciding game was a 12-8 victory over the Alphas, last year ' s champions, under the leadership of Jim Stocks as captain and Roger Costa as chairman. The team was cheered on by the six cheerleaders, and the foot- ball victory was theirs. JIMMY STOCKS Captain of the Football Team DELTA FOOTBALL Charles Kirby, chairman of the society and captain of the football team, made good leadership for the Delta Society. They worked hard and showed good sportsmanship throughout the football season. CHARLES KIRBY Captain of Football Team GIRLS ' BASKETBALL ALPHA GIRLS The Alpha Girls played excellently last year and almost took the trophy. This year under Carol Light, captain, they plan not to be second but the champs. The Alphas seem to be trying too hard for Mickey McMeans, who injured her ankle, and Karen Cox, who broke her toe. BETA GIRLS The Betas, having an overflow of girls this season, have the desire to take the championship this year. Mary Jane Still, captain, and an outstanding player, has a very good team to help her. DELTA GIRLS Last year the Deltas won the tournament games and will perhaps win again this year. They were short of players at first and had to recruit some new ones. A good team is now founded with outstanding players Chiquita Russell and Polly Kea under leadership of Esther Blume, captain. BOY ' S The Alpha basketball team for the past three seasons has been the reigning champion, but this year they received a blow when their captain and leading scorer, Ed Sisson, did not register for the winter quarter. Back from last year ' s team are: Wendell Poole, who succeeded Sisson as captain, Dave Brown, Bob Cook, and Laverne Deal. With these experienced players back from last season the Alphas could still come out on top. WENDELL POOLE Captain of the Basketball Team BASKETBALL The Betas this year have a strong team with Roger Costa and Morton Estep leading the way. They have not been a threat to anyone for the past few seasons, but this year we find a very aggressive and hard-playing team that works well together. With a few breaks, this could be their year. ROGER COSTA Captain of the Basketball Team BOYS ' BASKETBALL DELTA The Deltas this year have their hopes built around their captain, Byron Dollar, and Charles Kirby. They have an exceptionally tall team and shoot very well from the outside. This, plus their speed, could very well earn for them the title, champions. BYRON DOLLAR Captain of Basketball Team The Delta team Our referees, Ronald Doolittle and Richard Smith 106 An action shot of the Deltas and Alphas playing bal SOFTBALL According to the poets and novelists, every spring a young man ' s fancy turns to thoughts of love. On the campus of Trevecca Nazarene College the young men are not exceptions to the rule, but sharing the limelight with their romantic interests is the national pastime, the grand old game of softball. The softball season at Trevecca opened with plenty of action on the softball diamond. The three societies, Alpha, Beta, and Delta are all pushing for the championship. The Deltas will be trying to defend their last year ' s champion- ship. An outstanding contribution that they make is their sponsorship of the Saturday evening program and social activities. The Dee Cees are appointed in September at the beginning of the school term and meet monthly to discuss problems and make plans for projects. This is especially evidenced at reunion time — no matter where or when they meet. Everyone is young when with former classmates. Nobody knows for certain what makes Trevecca reunions so much fun. Whatever it is, it seems to work some kind of magic. A greeting jars memories loose, and a handshake can whisk you back to another decade. It is this spirit that brings alumni back to the banquet each year, that makes them want to be here. They come back to laugh and talk and remem- ber when. They come back to see how far they have gone away, to see how much they have changed. They come back to see their youth, because a part of it is always here. Many long hours of hard work have gone into the making of this book. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people that have helped to make this creation possible. We extend our sin- cere thanks to Associate Editor Sylvia Young and Assistant Business Manager Melvin Welch for their splendid work on the 1961 DARDA. To our staff members, our ad- visors, our photographers, our printers, and our cover company, we say thank you. The 1961 DARDA is completed — we hope that you have enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed making it possible for you.
