ft Ft 7he I9S 7 h«r4a TREVECCA NAZARENE COLLEGE NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE ELIZABETH STUCKI, EDITOR CHARLES CORK, BUSINESS MANAGER To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Ecclesiasfes 3:1 CONTENTS A TIME TO HONOR A TIME TO LEAD A TIME TO PROGRESS A TIME TO WORSHIP A TIME TO PARTICIPATE A TIME TO PLAY A TIME TO REMINISCE A MESSAGE The word Trevecca has its origin in the name Rebekah, who became the wife of Isaac. Therefore, Trevecca appropriately means the chosen of the Lord to become the Bride when Jesus returns for the Mar- riage Supper. The background for our college being named Trevecca was a school in Wales. This school was started on the Trevecca (Welch) Estate in 1767. John Fletcher was its first president, and John Wesley did the preaching in the opening school revival. Charles Wesley led the singing, using songs of his own composition. The Tre- fecca Estate was named for the daughter (Rebecca) of a prominent Welchman ap- proximately two hundred years prior to the opening of that school. The school was in operation four or five years ago and prob- ably is at the present time. The probable reason for Brother McClurkan choosing the name for his college in Nashville was the visit of Rev. G. Campbell Morgan and the feeling that the school in Wales had at one time been the type of institution that Brother McClurkan wanted his school to be. Trevecca ' s annual was named Darda in 1924. The meaning of the word was stated to be the pearl of wisdom. The name is found in I Kings 4:3 I . Darda was the name of a man who was considered among the four wisest men in his day and yet was not as wise as Solomon. I trust that Trevecca and its yearbook will ever measure up to the meaning of their names. A. B. MACKEY Our President ' s Home. Dr. and Mrs. A. B. Mackey and nephew, Gene TO HONOR... DEDICATION V. NEIL RICHARDSON Business Manager Somebody said it couldn ' t be done, But he with a chuckle replied That maybe it couldn ' t, but he would be one Who wouldn ' t say so till he tried. So he buckled right in with the trace ot a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn ' t be done, and he did it. For those who give up in the thick of the fight Have only themselves to blame If they feel no whit of the keen delight In successfully winning the game, The game that calls on the heart and head, The best man ' s strength and nerve; He proved that it can be done by the man Whose business it is to serve. Victor, Carol, Mr. Richardson, Mrs. Richardson and Mary Beth at home. Our busy, efficient business manager. n m i; M O R I A M RICHARD DALE HEMMERLY Son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis F. Hemmerly Born October 3, 1936 Died October 19, 1956 In perfect honor, perfect truth, And gentleness to all mankind, You trod the golden paths of youth, Then left the world and youth behind. Ah, net! ' tis we who fade and fail — And you, from Time ' s slow torments free, Shall pass from strength to strength and scale The steeps of immortality. JIMMY LEE AARON Son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville L. Aaron Born September 17, 1934 Died September I, 1956 The death-change comes. Death is another life. We bow our heads At going out, we think, and enter straight Another golden chamber of the king ' s, Larger than this we leave, and lovelier. And then in shadowy glimpses, disconnect, The story, flower-like, closes thus its leaves. The will of God is all in all. He makes, Remakes, for I — I i s own pleasure, all. 10 w HQ ' S H O BILL STRICKLAND SAMMIE BELL BILL JERNIGAN RUTH JOHNSON LARRY FINGER One of the top honors attainable at T.N. However, the sands of time moved more rapidly than we realized, and at last we found ourselves, the largest freshman class in history, in a strange new place, con- fused, and a trifle homesick. Time, fleet- ingly passing, soon obliterated those nos- talgic feelings, and right away we felt an important part of our new school home. Memories are many — the hardships of orientation, the fun of freshman night, the Christmas Party, and just living — but now as we leave the past, and with eager faces turn toward the future, we anticipate the prestige which will come with the acquisi- lion of the title, Sophomores! Emphasizing also the need for those who will pray and give, the group strives to bring them face to face with the needs of the mission fields so they may be intelli- gently, as well as spiritually, acguainted with our missionary program. Its function is the coordination of student activities with that of the college. At the beginning of the year it directs the organization of the clubs for the school year and plans the Friday evening programs. A revised student hand- book was also published this year. Because of lagging interest in sports the athletic activities of the college were reorganized into societies instead of the class basis of competition with the formation of the Trevecca Athletic Association. As a project this year the Council adopted a plan of fire prevention. This year ' s Student Council Lectures were given by Dr. Haldor Lillenas, song writer of world-renown in the Nazarene Church. The DARDA Staff perhaps more than anyone else realizes the necessity of mak- ing every second count as we wcrked tirelessly to bring together the culmination of all the year ' s activities which have come alive in these pages as we recaptured the fleeting moments of this school year. Without a loyal and hardworking staff the 1957 DARDA would have remained only a fragment of the editor ' s imagination. My sincerest thanks go to those who helped make it a reality. As I look through these pages I see the results of Harley ' s camera flashes; Ruth ' s literary genius; Wesley ' s artistic touch; the tireless typing efforts of Roberta, Barbara, Jo Lynn, and Lucille; Norma Jean ' s skilled organiza- tion; Lee ' s promotional ability; Corky ' s business techniques; Rudy ' s snaps, and Jim ' s untiring efforts and cooperation in aiding me to guide the 1957 DARDA to its successful completion.
