Captain Larry C. Baucom United States Navy Commanding Officer Captain Larry C. Baucom, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, is a 1970 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and holds Masters' Degrees in Systems Management from the University of Southern California and in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He received his Naval Flight Officer wings in August 1971 at Naval Air Station Glynco, Georgia. After a brief tour at Fighter Squadron 101 detachment Key West, he reported to VF-32 at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia following replacement training in the F-4 Phantom. During this tour, he made two extended Mediterranean de- ployments aboard USS Iohn F. Kennedy QCV-67, in both the F- 4B and F-14 aircraft. Captain Baucom graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Maryland in June 1977 and served as Project Officer for the development of the radar and weapons system in the FfA-18 at Strike Aircraft Test Directorate. In April 1980, following refresher training, he again reported to VF-32 where he served as Maintenance Officer. In May 1982, he reported to the Naval Military Personnel Command in Washington, D.C. where he served as Fighter Placement Officer until May 1984. He then assumed duties as Training and Readiness Officer at Fighter Wing One at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. Captain Baucom joined the World Famous Pukin' Dogs of USS Dwight D. Eisenhower QCVN-693 and commanded VF- 143 from September 1986 until February 1988. He then en- tered nuclear propulsion training and upon completion served as the pre-commissioning unit Executive Officer of USS George Washington QCVN-733 until Iuly 1991. He completed the course of study at the Naval War College in Iune 1992. In September 1992, he assumed command of USS Trenton QLPD- 14j. His decorations include two Meritorious Service Medals and the Navy Commendation Medal. Captain Baucom is married to the former Linda Diane Shull of Charleston, South Carolina. They reside in Virginia Beach with their four children, Brian, Kevin, Diane and Allison. ,affix , . Captain Stephen Ries United States Navy Commanding Officer 29 january 1991 - 8 September 1992 Captain Steven Ries was born in Iowa City, Iowa on Ianuary 13,1945. After enlisting in the United States Navy in July 1963, he was appointed as a midshipman to the United States Naval Academy. Graduated and commissioned as an Ensign in Iune 1968, he reported to USS Hamner QDD-7181 and served as Gunnery Officer and later as ASW Officer until April 1971. Completing the Department Head course at the Destroyer School in Newport, R.I., Lieutenant Ries returned to sea in USS Eversole QDD-7891 as Weapons Officer from Ianuary 1972 to April 1973 and served a second department head tour as Operations Officer in USS Kansas City QAOR-31 from May 1973 to August 1974. As a member of the United States Naval Academy Brigade Officer Staff from August 1974 to August 1977, he was assigned duties as a company officer and in- structor to the Brigade of Midshipmen. Promoted to Lieutenant Commander, he reported for duty on the staff of Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group Eight in Norfolk, Virginia and served as Flag Secretary until Ianuary 1980. Next he attended the Armed Forces Staff College joint officers course, and then reported to USS Manitowoc QLST-11803 as the ship's Executive Officer from August 1980 to March 1982. In May 1982, Com- mander Ries was assigned joint duty in Washington D.C. on the staff of the Deputy Director for Operations fNational Military Command Systemsj, Organization of the Ioint Chiefs of Staff until May 1985. Subsequently, he returned to sea as the Commanding Officer, USS Sumter QLST-11811 from Novem- ber 1985 to April 1987 and as Commanding Officer USS LaMoure County QLST-11945 in May 1987. Prior to reporting as Commanding Officer USS Trenton QLPD-141, Captain Ries served as the Executive Assistant to the Chief of Naval Ed- ucation and Training in Pensacola, Florida from May 1988 until October 1990. Captain Ries has been awarded the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service, Navy Meritorious Service, Navy Com- mendation, and Navy Achievement Medals. He has received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the United States Naval Academy, Master of Arts Degree in Ad- ministrative Science from George Washington University, and a Ioint Subspecialty from the Armed Forces Staff College. Captain Ries is married to the former Bette Peery of An- napolis, Maryland. They have two daughters, Susanne and Amanda. ,,Q.A.. Executive Officer Commander Alfred Steven Nugent, III United States Navy Commander Alfred Steven Nugent III was born August 1, 1956 in Paterson, New Jersey. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy in Iuly 1974. Commissioned as an Ensign in Iune 1978, he reported to USS Decatur QDDG-315 and served as First Lieutenant, and later as Damage Control Assistant. In June 1982, he was assignedas ,Course Design Director at the N avy's Organizational Effectiveness School and Development Center at NAS Memphis, Tennessee. After com- pleting the Department Head Course at SWOS in Newport, Rhode Island, Commander Nugent reported to USS Marvin Shields QFF-1066, and served as Chief Engineer from Iune 1985 to February 1987. From March 1987 to Iune 1989, Commander Nugent served as Damage Control Assistant on USS Con- stellation QCV-64j. He then attended the College of Command and Staff at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and received a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies in Iune of 1990. Prior to reporting as Ex- ecutive Officer USS TRENTON CLPD-145, Commander Nugent served as Flotilla Operations Advisor to the Royal Saudi Navy's Arabian Gulf Fleet during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Commander Nugent has been awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Ioint Services Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal CZJ, and Navy Achieve- ment Medal.
