THE TRENTON HISTORY ln the late nineteenth century the first USS TRENTON was commissioned. This was a 3800-ton wooden steam vessel, also with a full rig of sails. As flagship of Commander-in-Chief of the European Station, Rear Admiral William E. LeRoy, USN, she cruised to the Mediterranean as well as Northern Europe and was part of a squadron that was felt to have a stabilizing effect on chaotic European affairs. In 1883 she became the first United States vessel to use an electrical system. After major overhaul, she was recalled to Naval service in 1887 and sent to the south Pacific in 1888 to protect American interests in Samoa when Germany attempted to annex the Samoan Islands. The TRENTON was caught in Apia's circular harbor in March 1889 during a typhoon, where she was finally driven ashore and sank. Heroic efforts of both officers and crew kept the loss of life to one man and enabled the remainder of ship's company to be rescued with the assistance of Samoan natives. The current TRENTON is the third Navy ship and at least the seventh vessel that has honored the city of Trenton, New Jersey. ln 1784, the first namesake vessel was a cargo ship intended for West India trade. This ship was locally constructed in Greenwhich, New Jersey and commanded by Captain Charles Clunn, a member of a prominent Trenton family of navigators. A sailing packet member of a Boston, Massachusetts shipline was the next TRENTON. This ship offered first class passenger accomodations on a trip from Boston to Liverpool, England for approximately 5140. Robert L. Stevens, Esq., a Trenton native, designed the next TRENTON, a river steamer in the mid nineteenth century. Known as the fastest of its type in the country, this vessel steamed her usual route from Trenton to Philadelphia for the first time in two hours and fourty-seven minutes. 'w if USS TRENTON CSTEAM DRIVEN SLOOP OF WARD In 1924, a 7,000-ton Omaha class cruiser was commissioned by the Navy. This TRENTON, CCL-115, had a speed of 35 knots and was designed especially for fast scouting missions. During her twenty years of Naval service the TRENTON operated in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Her wartime operations included being part of anti-shipping task force 92 in the waters off the coast of Japan near the end of the war. After the second world war she received one battle star on the Asiatic Pacific Area service Medal. She was stricken from the Naval Register in August 1945. USS TRENTON CCL-113 ,,,,..,4f-

USS TRENTCDN CLPD-14 Today's TRENTON: the keel laid on 8 August 1966, was christened TRENTON and launched on 3 August 1968 by Mrs. Richard J. Hughes, wife of then governor of New Jersey. As an amphibious transport dock, CLPDJ it is a unit of the most versitile class of amphibious assault ships. By combining the troop carrying capability of the LPA, the floodable well deck of the LSD, and the and helicopter operating deck of the LPH, TRENTON maintains in one ship an integrated and balanced landing force. Trenton, therefore, provides fast transport of troops and their combat equipment and can rapidly land them ashore by vertical envelopment and boat waves. On March 6 TRENTON celebrated eleven years of commissioned service during a short, cake cutting ceremony on the mess decks. K X .. , ...,. Q ,,,,....,..
