It happened 13 December 1972 at anchor in Naples. After having come aboard to the pre- commissioning detail in Seattle, Washington on 1 December 1970, having put the ship in com- mission and having served since as the first Commanding Officer, Captain THIELE Was releived by Captain MCCORMICK- As a re- memberance of his tour, Captain THIELE re- ceived the commission pennet from MMCM NORMAND, Senior Enlisted Advisor and an engraved pocket watch and pendant from the wardroom, Captain MCCORMICK, a fighter pilot, received command of his first ship. PHIBLEX 6-73 commenced two days after he took command.

Captain Daniel G. McCormick , 5W.'73'7 Q fvf , , V ,, fe ff: f, f ,- f f, ,ff VW, f 7 ,J ,wb-LM' Captain MCCORMICK, the son of Mr. and Mrs. D.G. MCCORMICK of Hialeah, Florida, graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology prior to entering the Navy in March 1952 as a Naval Aviation Cadet. He was designated a Naval Aviator and received his Commission as Ensign in September 1953 Captain McCORMICK's first fleet assignment was with Attack Squadron 104 at Naval Air Station Cecil Field, Florida. Two deployments to the Mediterranean aboard the USS CORAL SEA CCVA-431 were com pleted during this tour of duty. His next assignment was to the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland, as a student in the Test Pilot School. Upon graduation in June 1957, he was assigned to the Board of Inspection Branch of the ELECTRONICS Test Division. Projects included BIS trials of the A3, F3, F9, A4, F8 series aircraft Assignment as Flag Lieutenant and Aide to Commander Carrier Division FIVE deployed in the Western Pacific followed duties at NATC, Patuxent River. His next assignment in June 1962 was with Fighter Squadron 114, the first West Coast Fleet Squadron to receive the F4 aircraft. During this tour, two deployments to the Western Pacific were made on board USS KITTY HAWK CCVA-631. In 1964 Captain MCCORMICK attended Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia. This was followed by a tour in the Office of Chief of Naval Operations COP-901 Program Planning and Budgeting. In November 1965 he was assigned to Fighter S-quadron 101, Key West, and in May of the following year he became the first Assistant Officer in Charge of VF-101 Detachment Oceana. Next Came a tour of duty as Executive Officer of Fighter Squadron 41 deployed aboard the Carrier USS INDEPENDENCE fCVA-62D. Captain MCCORMICK assumed duties as Commanding Officer VF-41 in February 1967. Fighter Squadron 41 became the first Navy squadron tol receive the newest F4 series aircraft, the F4J, the same month. In March of 1968 he was assigned duties as Air Operations Officer of the USS RANGER ICVA-615 then deployed to South East Asia. The next twenty-six months aboard RANGER included two Combat Cruises to Yankee Station and assumption of duties as the Operations Officer. In July 1970 Captain MCCORMICK assumed duties as Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron 101, NAS Key West, Florida. VF-101 with its detachment atNAS Oceana, Virginia, was the Nav,y's largest fleet replacement training squadron, responsible for training all East Coast F4 aircrews and enlisted personnel. Captain MCCORMICK Comes to USS TRENTON from the Naval Air Systems Command, where he was head of the Fighter Design Branch. Captain MCCORMICK is married to the former Barbara Jean WALDRON of Miami, Florida. The MCCORMICK's currently reside in Alexandria, Virginia with their three teenagers Glenn, Karen, and Chris.
