' 'Captain Karl R. Thiele - Captain Karl R. THIELE served as TRENTON's first Commanding Officer. Prior to reporting aboard in December, 1970 he served at U.S. Atlantic Fleet Headquarters, where hewas Assistant Director, Fleet Operations. A I Inhis Naval career Captain THIELE has served as Operations Officer on several sea duty assignments: Staff of Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla TWELVE, the nuclear powered guided missile cruiser USS LONG BEACH CCGN-9J, and on board two destroyers, USS HUGH PURVIS CDD-7095 and USS ROBINSON CDD-5623. Captain THIELE had duty in ROBINSON suring the Korean Theatre conflict. He has .made fifteen deployments to the European area' and three around-the-world cruises, including Operation Sea Orbit, the circumnavigation cruise of Task Force ONE. In addition, he served as Navigator on board the heavy guided missile cruiser, USS CANBERRA CCAG-25. A I - Captain THIELE has had previouscommand of two U.S. Navy ships. The first was an amphibious landing ship USS LSM 398, engaged in experimental work for the Naval Research Laboratory. The second command was a, destroyer, USS CONY CDD-5081. Captain THIELE sailed the CONY ona variety of missions in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas. L ' I Additional assignments for Captain THIELE ashore included two years in the Strategic Planning Di- vision of the Chief of Naval Operations Staff, duty on the Staff of Commander Destroyer Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and Aide and Flag Secretary to Commander, Operational Development Force. He is agraduate of the Air Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama, the Combat Information,Center School at Glenview, Illinois, and the Anti-submarine Warfare School at Key West, Florida. Although born 'in New York City, Captain THIELE has spent most of his life in New jersey. His secondary schooling was performed at Boonton High School, Boonton, New jersey, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and played four years of varsity football. Captain THIELE entered the service in July 1944, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Captain THIELE and his wifefthe former Carol Louise NINGARD of Baltimore, Maryland, have one son, Karl Douglass. They reside at 1677 Sheppard Avenue, in Norfolk, Virginia. V After being relieved, Captain THIELE reported to the staff of Commander Amphibious Operational Support Command Atlantic. r

It happened 13 December 1972 at anchor in Naples. After having come aboard to the pre- commissioning detail in Seattle, Washington on 1 December 1970, having put the ship in com- mission and having served since as the first Commanding Officer, Captain THIELE Was releived by Captain MCCORMICK- As a re- memberance of his tour, Captain THIELE re- ceived the commission pennet from MMCM NORMAND, Senior Enlisted Advisor and an engraved pocket watch and pendant from the wardroom, Captain MCCORMICK, a fighter pilot, received command of his first ship. PHIBLEX 6-73 commenced two days after he took command.
