Departure or 182 and a Wakeup!! 28 July 1972. Some looked forward to it. Most did not. Nevertheless for all it marked the beginning of an adven- ture in many ways- in patience if nothing else. One day out of Norfolk it was time to pick up our constant companions, a few good men, the troops of the 34th Marine Amphib- ious Unit. In less than 8 hours the five ships of Amphib- ious Squadron FOUR had loaded aboard 1500 plus marines, their vehicles, equipment and supplies and were headed due east. Next stop for most-the unknown.
