Mathematics Department IRIS the other departments of instruc- ' tion, the mathematics department offers the student body a choice between non-academic courses and college pre- paratory courses. The variety of courses is wide enough to allow each pupil to select work suited to his needs, desires, and ability. The tenth year offers plane geometry, and some honor students are given in- struction in trigonometry. In the junior year the student may select intermediate algebra. There are fast moving classes in this subject for apt mathematicians who cover trigonometry as well as algebra in the junior year. Seniors enter class- es in which they s t u d y advanced geometry. There is also a course in ' . s - I. XX iiiixi-N KUI.l.l industrial mathe- matics to aid pupils In obtain positions in industry. Special classes. covering more than the required course. enable many pupils to omit the lirst half year of college mathe- matics. College records reveal that Tren- ton High students have an unusual high record ot success in their mathematical courses not only in their freshman year but throughout the entire four years of study. These in- clude: Latin, French, ltalian, Spanish, and German. Latin, a good basis for the study of modern languages, is offered for four years, while French, the most popu- lar language, is studied for a period of three years with emphasis placed on reading and conversation. German is also offered for three years. ln this course the best literature of Germanic writers is Foreign Language read. Newspapers and magazines in the German tongue are also utilized in the instruction. Spanish, a two-year course. has the first year of work devoted to gram- mar and vocabulary, the second, to the Spanish conversation and literature clas- sics. One of the recent offerings in the mod- ern language department is instruction in ltalian. This course is offered for a period of two years. During this time the pupil gains a mastery of grammar and vocabulary. K.-xxii lmrtmcnt has had a busy time inter- preting world affairs to its pupils. ln addition to its instruction in current events. this department gives special train- ing in a wide variety of courses. Tenth-vear students have a choice of Iiarly liuropean History or a general course in XVorld History. Economic Geography. a study of world populations and commodities, is also offered to sopho- mores. juniors may take lVIodern Euro- pean History, which covers historical lfirirf lfffri' 1ln'I'l to Yljlltll Mmli-lim Hilti. lflilzilietli l71il.rmzm Social Science Department events from the time of the French Revo- lution to the present time. Seniors may select either Social-Problems classes to study present social life, take the lico- nomics course to study problems which affect man in business. or select American History and Problems of Democracy for a study of the development of our country and its present-day problems. An innovation this year was the lndus- trial Group. This course was composed of honor pupils who were interested in the community's business life. Through cooperation with the Trenton Chamber of Commerce,these pupils obtained inter- views with members of the chamber.
