Sophomores are given a series of lectures on the drama, the short story, the novel. verse, and prose nonftiction. Those sopho- mores who receive honor marks in ling- lish in their ninth grade are eligible for special courses in creative writing. juniors showing ability in creative writing may enter Spermlor I or the English Department l,flllVc'fIft' classes. Drama classes are open to those wishing to act, and speech classes, to those having oratorical ability. junior business students select business corre- spondence while the other students take the regular English course, l llia. Senior honor students are eligible for the Press and liolmxlzvlfz classes and for Spvrfnfor' II and Drama ll. College Board classes aid those preparing for col- lege entrance examinations. These in- clude: Latin, French, ltalian, Spanish, and German. Latin, a good basis for the study of modern languages, is offered for four years, while French, the most popu- lar language, is studied for a period of three years with emphasis placed on reading and conversation. German is also offered for three years. ln this course the best literature of Germanic writers is Foreign Language read. Newspapers and magazines in the German tongue are also utilized in the instruction. Spanish, a two-year course. has the first year of work devoted to gram- mar and vocabulary, the second, to the Spanish conversation and literature clas- sics. One of the recent offerings in the mod- ern language department is instruction in ltalian. This course is offered for a period of two years. During this time the pupil gains a mastery of grammar and vocabulary.
