It was the first period and objects were finally beginning to come into focus. The start of Mike's day had been predictable---a late start. At breakfast he had given up the effort to doublecheck his math. His ionic equations and scrambled eggs made a poorly balanced meal. He decided instead to give his history notes another once-over for the quiz. Caligula didn't taste too bad with buttered toast. Mike glanced over at Corri two rows away. Her feet were still tapping from her disco- donut breakfast down in the cafe. But she had more reason than that to be excited. Last night, after one of her best nights of the season in basketball, she discovered a very special letter waiting at home. She had been accepted to Rutgers. And tomor- row, if all went well, she'd be a licensed driver. By fourth period Mike was awake enough to hear some good news from his English teacher. Two of the poems he had submit- ted to the Talisman had been accepted for publication. There had been some stiff competition, and he was pleased enough with himself to lean back, gaze out his class- room window at the fountain shining in the sun, and imagine himself the first McCorris- tin graduate to receive the Pulitzer prize. Fortunately a nudge from a classmate be- hind him let him know that Sister waited to hear what he thought of Bronte's charac- terization of I-lealthcliff in Wuthering Heights.
