AHR, S.T.D. Bishop of Trenton THE VERY REVEREND THOMAS J. FRAIN, PH.D. Superintendent of Schools The education of the full man - this is the motto of a Catholic school. Upholding this standard is an important work - one greatly supported by our Most Reverend Bishop. Realizing the importance this challenge owes to the future, Bishop Ahr unceasingly urges the creation of new centers of learning to accommodate the ever-growing population. His present plans include the building of a sem- inary and five high schools. As superintendent of schools, Monsignor Frain has the responsibility of the functioning of the entire diocesan school system. Under his capable management the many parochial schools run smoothly and develop the youth who attend them into a well prepared citizenry. Second to none in his untiring efforts to educate youth is Monsignor McCorristin, our founder. Unselfishly giving of himself, he transformed a vacant field into the smooth run- ning system we know as St. Anthony High. Our thanks are not enough to give to him whose work as a pastor is certainly carried out to the nth degree. Finally, we owe our gratitude to our princi- pal, Sister John Joseph, O.S.F. Through her, law and order remain the code of justice here. Day after day finds Sister at her post, working for the good of the students. To these, we the graduating class of 1968, give heartfelt thanks for the opportunity of a firm background as we enter the world. shadow of one man. -R W. Emerson THE MOST REVEREND MICHAEL P. With it came an influx of new teachers, who, nevertheless, soon caught the spirit of S.A. and joined with the other faculty members in the education and guidance of the students. Then with January came another change. We returned from Christmas vacation to find our Sisters in a new garb. Again for a while it all seemed strange, but we soon became re-accustomed to the familiar faces and all proceeded as before. To all our dedicated teachers, old and new, we owe heartfelt thanks for the inspiration and guidance they have shown us. 7 SISTER CHRISTINE MARIE, O.S.F. MRS. EXPANDING TUDIE PROGRAM AUGME T TUDE T OPPORTUNITIES According to the old saying, L'Variety is the spice of lifef' and life at St. Anthony High has plenty of variety, not only in extracurricular activities but also in curricular offerings as well. Choice of subjects here follows the up-to-date single curriculum, which allows students a wide variety of choices from academic and business programs. Studies range from college preparatory courses to the newly installed Co-operative Work Program, which enables sen- ior business students to divide their school day into school and business life. This program will go into full effect next year. College preparatory courses permit advanced students to prepare themselves for higher education. For example, the academic math program offers both modern and tra- ditional algebra, while the science department includes two types of biology and two types of chemistry. Scientific minded students can take four years of science and four years of mathematics, just as those more interested in language can progress up to four years in any two lan- guages: Latin, and French or Spanish. Two years of German also are offered. Students who wish to take part in the Co-operative Work Program can begin freshman year with general busi- ness training. Each year new courses are offered to inter- ested students. Two new studies this year are salesmanship and small business organization. With the actual start of the C.W.P. next year, new business courses will be introduced. For S.A.'s artistic boy or girl, courses in fine art and commercial art are available. Mechanical drawing is also open to boys, while home economics is open to girls. All students, regardless of their other choices, must take four years of English and two years of United States History. Four years of physical education and health are also required. Indeed S.A.'s curriculum is as varied as the students who share in its benefits. It is arranged to suit the many different personalities that form the student body. Two heads are better than one. James French and Gary McAbee put their heads together over a physical science balance problem. STUDE T PARTICIPATIO I solemnly promise to do my duty as a member of the Student Council of St. Anthony High School . . . These words began the installation of the Student Coun- cil officers for the year 1967-1968. The weeks of campaign and indecision were over, the ballots were cast, and the mem- bers chosen. Campaign managers dis- carded their speeches, and loyal supporters put away their buttons and posters. An- other election had come to an end. But for the new Council members, it was just a beginning. Campaign promises and glib speeches were a thing of the pastg it was time for action. As the officers became acquainted with their duties, new plans and ideas began to take shape, and S.A. saw an increasing interest in Student Council activities. The student body was encouraged to cooperate more fully with the Council, and everyone was invited to attend the weekly meetings and to express his opinions. To strengthen the relationship further, the minutes of the meetings were read in the homerooms, and suggestions were solicited from all the students. As a result of student requests, certain innovations were addedg such as, music during lunch periods and the senior privilege to use the front door. The Student Council also sponsored dances and raffles to augment the student treasury. RI GS, ROSES I wish, I wish, I wish . . . This lovely wishing well was part of the Junior Dance decor. M., Jolly juniors proudly display their new rings, symbolic of their rank as future seniors. A D FO D REMEMBRANCES To anyone else, it would have been a routine Friday morn- ing, but to the juniors it was something special. Today, they became official', upperclassmen. It was Ring Day. The day commenced with attendance at Holy Mass, celebrated by Father Bohnsack. In his sermon, Father Bohnsack reminded the class of their new commitments in the coming year. Being seniors did not mean taking it easy, it meant working hard to attain that diploma. The rings were not simply a symbol of upperclass status, they signified leadership, understanding, and good example. When the new rings were finally blessed, each student proudly accepted his own. Classmates gaily turned rings, wish- ing luck and prosperity to one another. By noon, the junior class had been dismissed in a flurry of excitement. The climax of the day was the long-planned-for Junior Dance. In preparation, the cafeteria had been transformed into a riot of colors. Tender ls the Nightw was no exaggera- tion of that evening. Contentment shone on everyone's face as all danced even up to the last song. Junior Day may have been enjoyed only briefly, but it shall be remembered forever. 39 The beauty of the cascading waters of the fountain reflects Tender Is the Night in the eyes of Mary Tiedemann and Kenneth Miller. ff fftf ...Aw J,-ws. AND WO DERF L Hey, look us over, lend us an ear . . . sang the cast of Wildcat in their opening number, and the audi- ence in St. Anthonyls Gym-Auditorium did just that. For three hours they were captivated by the school's second musical presentation, the result of many weeks of hard work and earnest practice on the part of the entire cast and crew. But hard work and earnest prac- tice are not without rewards, and the cast of Wildcat received theirs on April 27, 28, and 29, when the musical proved to be a huge success. Based on the book by N. Richard Nash, the play unfolds the story of a young girl and her efforts to strike oil. Wildcat Jackson, portrayed by Lisa Toma- sulo, '70, comes to Centavo City to raise money to enable her crippled sister Jane, played by Barbara Volen, '70, to walk without limping. Though she owns no land, Wildcat is determined to strike oil and enlists the aid of the somewhat reluctant Joe Dynamite, the townls notorious foreman, who was portrayed by Charles Campagnucci, ,68. With a little luck and a lot of perseverance and ingenuity, Wildcat achieves her dream and sees her oil well prosper. I guess thislll show 'em, exclaims Wildcat Jackson in her triumph over the oil gang. Other important parts were played by James Corti, 567, as Sookie, Fern Magee, ,67, as the Countess, and John Avanzato, ,67, the Sheriff of Centavo City. Members of the Glee Club and of the Drama Club supported the lead cast. The success of the play was credited largely to Mrs. Constance Wokoun and Mr. Harry Lombardo, who directed the play, and to Mr. Michael Wallace, who was responsible for the scenic arrangements. Mrs. Isabelle Johnson was choreographer. As the 'fCorristin goes to press drama and choral groups are preparing their 1968 production, Finian's Rainbow. It is spread throughout the world. The S.A.H. Chapter opened last year and now num- bers over sixty members. The Third Order is not an ordinary club or activityg rather it is a lifelong commit- ment. Before one becomes a full-fledged member, there is a probationary period of one year. Monthly meetings include spiritual guidance, discus- sion of pertinent business, recitation of the Office, and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Spiritual director of the group here is the Reverend Giles Van Wormer, O.F.M. Conv. Patricia Piepsak is prefect, Anita Allegretti, vice-prefect, Elaine Ander- son, secretaryg and Barbara Borkowski, treasurer. During the various sports seasons, many intramural and interscholastic games are played. Here the Mikettes prove that their athletic ability is on a par with their male counterparts. The sports year is climaxed by the annual G.A.A. show. A fierce competition between the Brown team, headed this year by Barbara Steuulak, and the Gold team, by Linda Puhalski, provides a feeling of sports- manship, fun, and school spirit for both sides. The girls' sports agenda ends with the Sports Banquet held for all Brown and Gold athletes. A. SENIORS GRADUATE SHARON ARMOUR BARBARA AULT NANCY BACKES LAWRENCE BALDASARI Four long years ago, we pushed our way through the glass doors of St. An- thony High School, greeting new ac- quaintances with hesitant smiles. With high hopes and big dreams we sailed through our first year, amazed to find ourselves in the realm of high school. Freshman year rolled into sopho- more year and we found ourselves con- fronted with cut up frogs, and sub- junctive moods, and new locker com- binations. But we took these problems in stride-we were sophomores. We were classmates and then we were friends! By junior year we had bound together as a class. Strength in spirit and unity saw us through this first upperclassmen year, which was culminated in the bond of our class ring. As seniors we came through different glass doors, earning the privilege of front-door service by our honored rank. In these past four years we learned many things-spiritual, intellectual, and social. But we are leaving now, the glass doors are closing behind us. We gaze at them long and hard, then locking them firmly in our memories, we turn toward the outside world, knowing our past is solidly behind us.
