Thlnk I'll 1nvest1gate As he swoops down to a Slde w1ndow and looks 1n he sees that lt IS Mary Wagenbach and who should be s1tt1ng at the counter sxppxng a cup of coffee, but the newly elected congresswoman V1rg1n1a Keller' W1thout opemng the w1ndow the sp1r1t of '51 goes 1ns1de and perches unseen on the sal shaker 1n front of V1rg1n1a as she says Rally, fellow countrywoman would you Illllld turn1ng on the rahd1o to statxon DRIP so that I can hear t.he stock car race at Tremont s Speedway Some of the knds we went to school w1t.h are dr1v1ng, I understand Ah yes, I knew some of em were slated for that career when we were m school By th1s t1me the rad1o has warmed up and we re just 1n t1me, because the annotmcer lS say1ng 'Th1s IS station DRIP transferrxng you to t.he newly buxlt Speedway on Tremont s so th s1de where Ken Stuber IS wa1t1ng to broadcast an on the spot report w1th h1s rov1ng m1.ke Come 1n Ken ' 'How do you do lad1es and gentlemen Th1s lS your sports broadcaster, Kenneth Stu r, down on the Koch Baurer Speed way the largest 1n the world, g1ven to our falr c1ty by the mulu m1ll1ona1res Mlrlahl Koch and Verla Baurer The cars are warmmg up now and the mechamcs are look1ng them over 'Ah yes 1t s a beaut1fu1 day for the races, and now here IS the l1ne up Dr1v1ng car No 6 owned by the gay d1vorcee, Leona Pflederer, IS Bob Roosa, the Mad Man at the wheel Dale Sauder, the lead footed farm lad, and h1s mechan1c Elmer Papenhause, one of t.he same are tun1ng up the1r beat up Chrysler No 20 Over to our r1ght4s let's see No 8 314 15 the only g1rl dr1ver 1n th1s race the blush1ng blond Al1ce M1ller 1n that '36 Ford owned by Shirley Rowell fash1on desxgner The bets on today s race are commg 1n th1ck and fast It's rumored that the luck1est better 1n the Unxted States 15 here None other than W1lma D111 Seems l1ke t.he whole class of '51 IS here today I was just glanc1ng over the stands and I saw a good number of fam1l1ar faces I see the W1neburners are here -Shorty and the former Marllyn Beyer you know I guess Short's back home before h1s new season of Football Wllh the Canton Jets I-Ie's made qu1te a name for h1mself Unless I m m1staken they re talkmg to t.hat All An1er1can 1n girl's basketball, Mar11yn Lohnes who IS also home on vacatlon after a heavy season of 54 w1ns and no losses It looks as though the race IS gettmg near startmg t1me Pete Pa1ne, foreman of R A 's construct1on gang, IS mov1ng that Bu1ck up to t.he starung gate wh1le Duke Welty lb glVlDg h1m one of those pep talks that he's noted for Pull1ng 1n next to them IS a maroon Pont1ac dr1ven by Bob Brenkman HIS mechamc, Ioanne Woerner the only mechamc who IS fldlng 1n the race fkeep your hands on the wheel Bobl seemed to be havmg a lxttle trouble w1t.h the motor a wh1le ago but lt'S purr1ng l1ke an over grown B 29 now Hawkeye Moser, the plow Jockey, has made qu1te a name for h1mself w1th that Hudson HIS mechan1c, Ray Moser a p1pef1tter by trade, says that Hawkeye's the best yet There are supposed to be e1ght runn1ng today but John Mason had a l1ttle m1sfortune wh1le dr1v1ng over McCluggage brxdge 1n Peor1a the other day I d1dl'1,t get all the deta1ls but lt was somethmg about a maroon Bu1ck converhble Last but not least lS one Bunny Hoffman and h1S Plymouth It's startmg t1me now and Mary Ann Hellemann, chosen as queen of the track IS takmg her place 1n the Judges stand She's to klSS the w1nner Don Mlchel owner of M1chel Brxck Lay1ng Assoc1at1on but starter for the race IS ra1s1ng the flag and 11,5 down' They re off' Lead1ng them around on th1s f1rst lap IS V1rg1n1a Wexsen hofer back from Texas r1d1ng a Texas long horn She s settmg qu1te a pace Look at them g um Before we transfer back to t.he tower I'll say that at the end of the f1rst lap Bob Roosa, Wlul a tremendous takeoff has just lapped the f1eld for the second time Now back to the tower 'Use Sharpo Razor Blades for a shave that's smooth, sharp and qu1ck' MOVIC star, M lene Schlumph tMarlene Sauder to youj says, I l1ke men who use Sharpo Blades They're so MMMMMMMMMM Th1s IS Ken Stuber back on the track aga1n and the last of the 500 laps lS over The race IS over Ican't see the number of the car for the people around The w1n11er has Jumped down Mary Ann our queen IS runmng out to meet h1m She has thrown her arms around h1s neck and planted a b1g k1ss rlght on h1s grease spattered What's happened though?
