Qisfozjy The community of llaha is in the Southeast comer of Travis County, near the Bastrop and Caldwell county lines. The nearest approach of white 'people to-llaha was nada by the Spaniards many years ago, for a few miles' to the East runs the Old Spanish Road which was once the main thorough fare betleen Ban Antonio and Houston, and much used during the Texas Revolution. lhen the first settlers cane here more than fifty years ago, they saw possibilities of a rich farming country, then covered with meaqulte trees and mesqulfe graasa ' These people, either for lack ot a better name or through an unflinching sense of humor, called their settle- ment the 'Poor ?arm 3 but it gradually came to be known aa llaha 'because of Maha Creek, which flows through lt. In the early-part of the nineties the first schoolhouse was-built. It Iac a small bulld- lng 56:29 feet,.of crude lumber withthe hea-ry wooden shutters, and windows cr doors on all sides. The sto-ve stood in the center of the room. ' In 1908 a modern building was -erected. It was described in the 'hams School Journal ot 1909, as being, one of the very best county one-room schoolhouse inthe United 8tates......... well hullt, hyglenlcally lighted, mates and Ventilated. nr. n. Uv one, then e tryetem de- serves a great deal of credit for- the interest amd:-cttoiff he put forth ln the erection of this building. Other early settlers who' deserve hornorable mention are ltr. Young, who donated the first land for the white school, and llr. Oatmsn, who set aside a part of his property for lexlcan and Negro schools. In 1914, Maha School was honored with a prlse of 0100 through a county-wide contest for beautification and sanitation of school grounds. le honor the efforts of the teacher and pupils who were able to show their appreciation of the Haha we love. lost of the present residents of Maha have memories of school days in this bulldlng. The teachers of lhha, nen and women, have left their influence on the hearts and minds of the people, as well as in nore tangible evidence such as the piano, the old vlctrola, pictures, books, planting of trees, and costumes used in plays. The P. T. A. of Maha has also glvenuloyal support and effort in keeping up the standards of the school, as have muy boards of trustees. - But standards and needs of a ccamunity change, and laha decided that a new school was needed, so in the sumer of 1955, an optomfstlc 'move was made in tearing down the totally inadequate lexicon school and moving the white school over to tahe its place. The new bulld- ing will be a modern two-teacher sohoolfwlth the latest in lighting, heating, ondwentllationg a lunch room and adequate entertainment facilities. Nor, because of delay in getting funds, the children of lhha, for the first tline, are V going to school in an old residence, under two teachers. The spirit of our pioneers preiails and we carry onwith the vision of a new building soon to be realised for future classes md graduates. 1 ' o f '-Wife g X- E, 'f,XJp17r+'--',,1t ' , .ii , . ,f 10 X-P1T'x Tvs- X' N' -1-f-HM..
