College Preparation At Traverse City Senior High students could begin preparing for their careers as early as their sophomore year by taking aptitude tests and studying college brochures in the Career Center. Another opportunity offered to student: at TCHS was College Night. And in their junior and senior years students continued this preparation by taking several nationwide tests. Mrs. Bates, the Career Center aide, helped students locate various materials that were available to them. The Career Center offered a wide range of materials students could choose-from a multitude of information dealing with their specific career choices to college brochures from many colleges around the United States. She also arranged for students to talk to representatives from various colleges. College Night was another special feature at TCHS. It was held on October 22nd. with around 45 colleges and vocational schools represented: students and parents from all over the Grand Traverse area were invited to attend. After meeting in the auditorium to listen to a brief presentation on financial aid, students were then able to attend three separate presentaitons by the colleges present. An added feature was a special section just on financial aid for people that wished to learn more about the subject. Most students, especially seniors, found the evening to be especially beneficial because they were able to make tentative decisions about their futures through this opportunity- In the fall the juniors began the dreaded process of standardized testing by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, which is better known as the PS AT. This test was considered to be a practice run, so students could learn what the entrance exams they would be taking later in the year would feel like. Many college scholarships were also given to deserving students on the basis of this test. Later in the year these students took either the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) or the ACT (American College Test). Some students took both. Many students at TCHS took a special class called College Preparatory English to help them ' 'bone up for either of those tests. Another form of special tests for college bound students was the Advanced Placement Exams which were taken mainly by seniors in late spring. These tests enabled students who had an extensive background in subjects, such as English or Calculus, to receive college credit for the knowledge.

Students and parents find calculators along with special school-sponsored work sessions absolutely essential in filling out the complicated scholarship form. Microfilm is one of the many ways students can research possible careers, according to Debbie Goodney Michelle Rynd and Mrs. Bates look through the many college catalogues, hoping to find one that is Just right for Michelle Diligently poking holes through an answer sheet. Dana Davis wonders what interests wiH be revealed by the aptitude test.
