Local News In the school year 1980-1981 Traverse City continued its attempts to renovate both downtown and the entire area. The Downtown Development Association continued its talks about creating a mall downtown with a parking ramp. With the possibility of anew mall, the Buffalo Mall, in Garfield township in the background, increased interest was found in improving downtown While these talks were going on. Ellias Brothers opened a beautiful, new restaurant in the renovated Beadle Building where Cunningham Drugs once stood. The old Michigan Theatre was also in the process of being turned into a small shopping mall. Traverse City also purchased some land on East Bay to turn into another open space area The controversy on the future of the Clinch Park Zoo also continued. If friends could raise funds, plans were made so new and larger areas could be provided for all of the animals. But the people against the continuation of the zoo still continued their protests on the basis of the large cost for the renovation. Two school related items were also of local interest in the year 1980-1981. The first was the public high school's and St. Francis's shared time program. In the past years. TCHS has been able to run a branch at St. Francis for their students to attend a shared time program, but because of a court ruling over the summer, this annex was closed. St. Francis still was able to bus students to TCHS for some classes, but the program was no longer as efficient as it once was. Another area of local concern was the hugh amount of money spent in re-sodding Thirlby Field. Because of vandalism over the summer, all of the 1980 football games were muddy events, and the school system found it necessary to spend $50,000 in sod. However, the money was obtained through outside sources. A Hilton Hotel was also opened in Acme This hotel's golf course was partially owned by Jack Nicklaus, and a major golf tournament was to played there in the summer of 1981. Ex-President Ford returned to Traverse City to speak on behalf of Dick Allen, a candidate for Congress in the 1980 elections. The race between Republican Dick Allen and Richard Albosta was very close. But Albosta was re-elected to Congress at the end of this hotly contested race.

College Preparation At Traverse City Senior High students could begin preparing for their careers as early as their sophomore year by taking aptitude tests and studying college brochures in the Career Center. Another opportunity offered to student: at TCHS was College Night. And in their junior and senior years students continued this preparation by taking several nationwide tests. Mrs. Bates, the Career Center aide, helped students locate various materials that were available to them. The Career Center offered a wide range of materials students could choose-from a multitude of information dealing with their specific career choices to college brochures from many colleges around the United States. She also arranged for students to talk to representatives from various colleges. College Night was another special feature at TCHS. It was held on October 22nd. with around 45 colleges and vocational schools represented: students and parents from all over the Grand Traverse area were invited to attend. After meeting in the auditorium to listen to a brief presentation on financial aid, students were then able to attend three separate presentaitons by the colleges present. An added feature was a special section just on financial aid for people that wished to learn more about the subject. Most students, especially seniors, found the evening to be especially beneficial because they were able to make tentative decisions about their futures through this opportunity- In the fall the juniors began the dreaded process of standardized testing by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, which is better known as the PS AT. This test was considered to be a practice run, so students could learn what the entrance exams they would be taking later in the year would feel like. Many college scholarships were also given to deserving students on the basis of this test. Later in the year these students took either the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) or the ACT (American College Test). Some students took both. Many students at TCHS took a special class called College Preparatory English to help them ' 'bone up for either of those tests. Another form of special tests for college bound students was the Advanced Placement Exams which were taken mainly by seniors in late spring. These tests enabled students who had an extensive background in subjects, such as English or Calculus, to receive college credit for the knowledge.
