Many things happened during the year 1980-1981 of national consequence. Perhaps, the most memorable was the return of the American hostages on January 21, 1981. The Americans wrote thousands of letters to both the 52 hostages and their families during the 444 day ordeal. And when they came home, thousands of yards of yellow ribbon, tied around anything that would support it. welcomed them back. The 1980 election showed the country's swing to the right when both a Republican president and a Senate were elected. Ronald Reagan, the 69 year old actor from California, was victorious over Jimmy Carter, the 56 year old peanut farmer from Georgia, by a huge number of electoral votes. Later in the spring of 1981. John Hinckley made an assassination attempt on newly elected President Reagan, injuring four people, including the President. The United States made great advances in the field of space technology during the year. In November of 1980. the Voyager I successfully photographed Saturn. During April the US launched the Columbia space shuttle from Florida and landed it in California, and the country celebrated being the first to build a reusable space shuttle Natural disasters occurred with seemingly great frequency. Probably the most tragic was the MGM Hotel fire and the many tragic arson fires that followed. In the MGM fire alone, 84 people died. And nationwide, travellers started requesting rooms on the first or second floors of hotels. Mt. St. Helens, which first erupted on May 18. 1980, continued to keep the southwest part of Washington on edge as the citizens watched the volcano erupt again and again Fhcti es by Wide Work.1 Photos WELCOME BACK TO' FREEDOM •A a 20

Local News In the school year 1980-1981 Traverse City continued its attempts to renovate both downtown and the entire area. The Downtown Development Association continued its talks about creating a mall downtown with a parking ramp. With the possibility of anew mall, the Buffalo Mall, in Garfield township in the background, increased interest was found in improving downtown While these talks were going on. Ellias Brothers opened a beautiful, new restaurant in the renovated Beadle Building where Cunningham Drugs once stood. The old Michigan Theatre was also in the process of being turned into a small shopping mall. Traverse City also purchased some land on East Bay to turn into another open space area The controversy on the future of the Clinch Park Zoo also continued. If friends could raise funds, plans were made so new and larger areas could be provided for all of the animals. But the people against the continuation of the zoo still continued their protests on the basis of the large cost for the renovation. Two school related items were also of local interest in the year 1980-1981. The first was the public high school's and St. Francis's shared time program. In the past years. TCHS has been able to run a branch at St. Francis for their students to attend a shared time program, but because of a court ruling over the summer, this annex was closed. St. Francis still was able to bus students to TCHS for some classes, but the program was no longer as efficient as it once was. Another area of local concern was the hugh amount of money spent in re-sodding Thirlby Field. Because of vandalism over the summer, all of the 1980 football games were muddy events, and the school system found it necessary to spend $50,000 in sod. However, the money was obtained through outside sources. A Hilton Hotel was also opened in Acme This hotel's golf course was partially owned by Jack Nicklaus, and a major golf tournament was to played there in the summer of 1981. Ex-President Ford returned to Traverse City to speak on behalf of Dick Allen, a candidate for Congress in the 1980 elections. The race between Republican Dick Allen and Richard Albosta was very close. But Albosta was re-elected to Congress at the end of this hotly contested race.
