Some of the basic things around Traverse City will hopefully never change, like the sunsets over the lakes, and sailboats, and the downtown. Around the school some things never really changed either. There was a skinner coach, but football still was the students' favorite. The seniors' main goal was still the same-graduation! But probably the most important thing remained unchanged-good friends. 16

International News Many things of international consequence happened in the years 1980-1981. Iran became a focus of attention after the capturing of 53 American hostages on November 4. 1979. On April24. 1980. the US attempted a secret rescue mission, but it ended in disaster, leaving 8 servicemen dead when one of the helicopters developed engine trouble and crashed. Finally, on January 21. 1981. the remaining 52 hostages were released and were flown to Frankfurt. West Germany. Iran's troubles, however, did not cease. It was soon plunged into war with Iraq which left many of the oil fields destroyed in both countries. Then the USSR invaded Afganistan. and in reaction the United States boycotted the summer Olympics. Polish workers wanted better hours and more union representation, so they went on strike. This caused international concern, for many countries feared the intervention of the USSR in the affairs of one of its satellites. People from all over the world immigrated to the US during 1980-1981. Southeast Asian refugees settled throughout the country, and some entire families were adopted by communities. Thousands of Cuban and Haitian refugees entered the U.S. in Key West. Florida, after travelling across the ocean in generally unstable boats. Most settled in Miami which soon became like a country within a country. Clashes of culture soon resulted in riots, and the city became an armed camp. Droughts in already hunger stricken Africa and an earthquake in Italy caused the death of thousands of people. The earthquake killed 3.076 people and left 200.000 people homeless. The death of former Beatle John Lennon caused the world to focus their attention on Yoko Ono his widow. Thousands of notes of condolence were mailed to her. and there was a revival of many of the Beatle's greatest hits. Pictures by Wide Word Photos
