Homecoming Spirit Not Surpressed By Loss The 1976 Trojan homecoming was a disappointment when the Muskegon Reds shut-out Traverse City with a 33-0 defeat. Both teams were expecting a close game where lucky breaks and concentrated teamwork would determine the victor. Muskegon showed exceptional offensive play, gaining three touchdowns before the teams oroke for half-time. The Trojans tightened their defense upon returning, but after a few minutes into the 3rd quarter, the Reds picked up a Trojan fumble which resulted in another Muskegon touchdown. T.C. continued their efforts that proved fruitless against the Muskegon line. The Reds concluded the scoring when they earned their final touchdown during the 4th quarter. Although homecoming was an important contest, it was more than just the football game to many. Activities such as the big mouth contest, floats, sign painting and a pep assembly provided competition between the classes to heighten the spirit of the event. Preparations for homecoming began weeks earlier with each class creating a float to compete with the other classes' entries. The sophomore class took 1st place for their Tip the canoe and the Reds, too” entry. The junior and senior floats with their themes of Wrap up the Red and Let the north winds ring with glory, tied for the 2nd place honors. Candidates for homecoming king and queen were selected from the senior class and then voted on by the student body. The winners, Ben Lautner and Linda Dreves, were crowned by school principal, Arthur Schubert. A homecoming dance after the game wrapped up the festivities with music by Masquarade.
