It ' s the first of September again and the college stu- dents are coming to town. Lexington porks up, shakes off summer lethargy, and extends welcoming arms. Transylvania housekeepers work overtime to clean rooms and sort leftovers so that each room will have at least ono surprise package. Mrs. Franks sighs for the departed peace and rushes smilingly out to greet new arrivals. (See above.) Hamlltonlans lug alrplans bags up forty-four steps and go through trying hours endeavoring to locate keys, last year ' s stored equipment, and roommates. Old girls hang over the railings to eye the new girls; new girls timidly return the gaze. Remnants of family kiss daughter good- bye and tearfully leave her to the mercies of the cruel college world. Ewing lights up again and boys trickle In from the globe corners at all hours of the day and night, mostly night. (Thus no picture.) Mrs. Darnall dries their first homesick tears and settles down to a happy hectic life in Bedlam. WE ARE WELCOMED

THIS WAS THE YEAR when we lisfened to reports or London air raids, sang God Bless Annerica between halves at football games, learned a great deal about democracy from our chapel speakers. The boys and younger faculty members registered for the draft, and many of us found ourselves vitally Interested for the first time in government goings-on. Order number and deferment until June sprinkled conversations; plans had to be changed; American defense and a third term became new topics for bull sessions. Second semester registra- tion fell short, the few graduates augmented by a couple of early-bird draf- tees and several future air cadets. Other things, too, engaged our Interest. Transylvania beat Georgetown, and the bell rang for days and days and nights and nights. (Remem- ber Summe?) Morrison chapel emerged from the dirt of years; we cele- brated Its rebirth along with the hundredth anniversary of Raflnesque s death. This was the year that more people voted In the Transy Day elections than ever before, and more people went to school more days than ever before, and some of them petitioned for two more days off Thanksgiving, but didn ' t get them. In fact, a great many things happened on the Transy campus this year. On the pages of the CRIMSON most of them are recorded. That we could not include them all is because, inconveniently, the book did have to go to press. But here you will probably find what you are looking for. If you do, we will consider our job well done.

Freshmen rook to him for advice on class schedules and conduct in general. He is the student minister ' s best friend.
