1 PRINCIPAL ' S We have raised the roof at Trafal- gar! Our school is substantially more than steel and bricl(, plaster and paint. The dedication of our new facility affirms our long tradition of program development, growth and excellence in education. It is, we believe, a stimulating envi- ronment where young girls come to learn and grow in the understanding of themselves and the world around them. We hope that the class of ' 87 has developed a love of knowledge, that MESSAGE they have learned respect, understan- ding and tolerance along with skills for academic and professional success. The faculty has shown by its effort and concern that they are supportive of these objectives. With pride we say collectively to this year ' s graduates: go forth to greater achievement — you have much to offer and we wish you well. 2 3 5 Life at Trafalgar is... unique. Face it gals, how many schools fit twenty kids (at one time) into an 8 by 6 foot changing room after Phys Ed class? How many schools have a common room that could be used as a set for the movie INFERNO ? How many schools serve cream of mystery soup for lunch? Come on, admit it- you really do love it here - because nowhere else in this world can you find a place with more laughs and more friendships. Not only do Trafites leave with a better education, but they leave with fond memories... turning into a savage line pusher on Muffin Day or when tuck has new stock... losing a piece of your gym uniform once a week... that wonder- ful stiff feeling in your legs after sit- ting in assembly for twenty minutes... Well, one thing ' s for sure: Traf builds character! When you- leave those front doors for the last time you ' ll be ready to conquer the world! Yours truly. Head Girl. Top left: Robbie Sanders, (Games Tursi. ECHOES ECHOES I The Stratford trip was a great success once again. The four days flew by as we went sight- seeing, feasted in quaint restaurants, visited Western University and saw 4 excellent plays: HAMLET, THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, HENRY VII, and ROSENCRANTZ AND GUIL- DENSTERN ARE DEAD, all either written by Shakespeare or based on his works. Thank you chaperones, Mrs. Packer, Mrs. Rollins, Mrs. Randall, Mrs. Manicom and Mme Boily. 8 TRICIA ANDREA SUBUHI JESSICA KATIE JILL LARA BRYN TARA CHERYL CELIA WENDY KATHY DOROTHY CHERYL TRICIA ANDREA JESSICA KATIE z Ul oc o s LISA ANNA AUDREY :k o X H 5 m o) H Z c_ m LAURA MELISSA VALERIE SHARON SUNITA VERONICA JULIA ANDREA CELIA GINA JULIE SUSIE LISA CONNIE MICHELINE TRICIA DEBBIE LAURA STEPHANIE TRICIA JANE PEPPER IRISH, PEP. Stephanie Burnett, liB. Swaying from side to side, the Nave (Italian for ship) makes its way through the North Atlantic Ocean, having already passed the mid Atlantic ridge 450 miles ago. Our destiny is New- foundland, specifically the Grand Banks. First, however, we must go to Cape Race, where I told my colleagues to meet us. My five colleagues are with me on the ship; three others have already arrived, since they left two days before us from Palermo, Sicily, where we all live, in order to buy supplies in Lisbon and prepare It, for our arrival so we can begin instantly. Sorpresa, Gianni! ( Surprise, Jack! ' ) Claudio! Come sta vostro gita? ( How did your trip go? ) Abbatanza bene, grazie. ( Fairly well, thanks. ) The sight of my colleagues and the thought of what awai- ted us invigorated me. I was to start working immediately. The eight of us had come to meet here, in Cape Race, which was a harbour and fis- hing area, to buy a boat big enough to enable us to live in it, plus, fit all our expensive equipment in it. After having done so, we hitched a ride to the nearest vil- lage ' s food and supply store. Buying an adequate amount of essential foods, to last us for at least a week or so, including fishing gear, for fresh seafood. On the way back, we managed to thumb another ride. This time, from a red-bearded, unreaso- nably plump truck driver with a distinct stench of perspiration. Arriving at our meeting place we hauled our new acquisi- tions onto the boat we had recently bought. A timeworn fisher- man was watching and listening deliberately to our conversa- tions, which he oisviously didn ' t understand, while we worked and made ready to leave Cape Race. Ya ain ' t from here, eh? grunted the old man, as he lim- ped towards us. Che cosa dice lui? muttered Enrico, one of my eight col- leagues who spoke only Italian. ( What is he saying? ) We are doing ichthyological research, colda water sharks! I replied loudly, close to the fisherman ' s ear. Well at least ya did somethin ' right. Ya picked tha best place for fishin ' . But ya have to have a permit to fish here, and a Cana- dian citizenship if ya want to work or buy a boat; it ' s just like ya buying a house and settling down ta live here for a long bit! informed the old man. There was a long silence as the ones who understood thought about what he had said, and the others who didn ' t, just went along with the silence. ' ' Ya, but which one of ya would want to give up ya life and family in Italy? ' coughed the old fisherman. Well that ' s no matters. Wea go now. Addio! chorused everyone. ( Good-bye! ) Advancing forward at a reasonably slow speed, we met ano- ther boat, which was much smaller than ours. Two fishermen were on the deck pulling in their nets. One stopped and began to ask us questions. Where ya headin ' ? Grand Banks, hollered back Goglielmo (William), which was probably the only English he had learned on the trip over to Canada. Uno minuto. (just a minute), stressed Goglielmo as he held out his index finger as he told Gilffredo (Jeffery) to go find me. Yes, signore? I asked the dirty, sweaty fisherman who had stopped working to talk to us, while his partner kept on working. Yua know where ya goin ' ? Wea stop some wheres in Grand Banks! Wea exploring waters! Oh, good! mocked the fisherman who had chosen to keep on working. Well, ya know it ' s a shoal and fishin ' area, it ' s in the Atlan- tic, just off the southern and eastern coasts of Newfoundland! screamed the dirty, sweaty fisherman, as he swung around poin- ting to various areas. It ' s 200 miles wide and it extends 500 miles from west ta east! Ya can ' t miss it! he shouted, waving good-bye as he zoomed off. We picked a shallow, clear place to start with. Gianni, Adriano, Christanio (Christopher) and I put on our scuba gear (but of course, I kept my brother Sergio Valente ' s jeans on, they fit great!) and jumped in the neck-high, rather cool, somewhat warm water. Surprised that it was not frigid, Enrico was quick to point out, whether he was right or wrong, we didn ' t know; that it wasn ' t supposed to be cold. If yo u looked on a map Grand Banks is situated directly facing the Bay of Biscay, which sur- rounds the left side of France and Spain, on the other side of the mid Atlantic ridge. Under the water we went. The water was a beautiful clear blue-turquoise and thousands of colourful fish of various sizes swam along calmly. This type of quiet day continued, and there was no sign of sharks. Our food supply was exhausted so we returned to shore, this time to St John ' s instead of Cape Race. During our stay, I realized I was enjoying myself more than I had in Sicily. I went to the government immigration office. There, I spent time filling in a questionnaire in a tacky office. The next day, one of the staff contacted me at the hotel where I was staying. I had been accep- ted! I was now a Canadian! Maybe if I returned to the bar I had been at last night, I would meet that good-looking waitress; maybe she ' d marry me? But who knows, maybe I ' d turn her down and go join my brother Sergio in San Diego, California. It was very early, the sun wasn ' t even up yet. Our instru- ments showed a sign of change in the water. Usually, the machi- nes could also detect fish. Gianni and I decided to go down. Adriano lowered the brightest light to the surface of the water. We ventured along, underwater flashlights in hand. They did not remain there long. Paralyzed, we dropped them at the sight of an amazingly large, voracious cold-water shark. 54 BUT A WALKING SHADOW -Alix Ohiin IVB Don ' t cry for me. Too many teardrops in debt- Shadows washed from a tired sea, Yearning to forget. Please don ' t plead. Silhouette of heroic gesture It ' s never the fools who roam the world Searching for a cure. Don ' t follow me: The tears of blind obligation Add poison to bloody guilt; As the flowers of honor learn to wilt, I bid goodbye the prison I shun- t cry for me. WINDOWS Diane McMath, IVB Men came last week to put new windows In my house, and suddenly the view is Different, familiar yet new. The scene Is just the same: the fields are green; The cherry weeps pink petals on rain Pools; the sea ' s as blue as the shirts The workmen wore. But there ' s a kind of Gloss it did not have before, both Inside the house and out. I think it Comes about because windows are more Than glass or places where walls grow Thin and I look out and light looks in. They are the little pieces of the world Chosen, framed, and hung, and what Comes through for all to see is one Householder ' s vision of -REALITY! MS. LORD -Silja Howard, lA Ms. Lord is our teacher Who married a preacher in the bleachers. She came to school the next day, Leaned on her desk and started to pray. Effortlessly, without exactly thinking about what she was doing, the girl began to draw a zoo scene with cages. She drew a lion in one, and a monkey with a crooked face in another, and a zebra in ano- ther. She drew more cages and put animals in all of them. Under each one, she drew signs and wrote what animals were in them, polar bears, penguins, ostriches and so on, and then she noticed a cage that was empty. She tried to think of other animals (that she could draw), but none came to her mind. For some strange reason, the girl felt she wanted to cry. She rubbed at the empty cage with her eraser, but when she had finished, she could still make out the bars. She rubbed harder, but the dents made by the sharp pencil could never be erased. Finally, the girl crumpled up the paper and pushed it into the back of the desk. No one would find it there, only perhaps the janitor, and he would never know who had written it. That night, as she lay in bed, the girl closed her eyes and tried to drift into her dream world. Her world was beautiful and green. An orange sun blazed through the lush green leaves of trees so tall their tops were lost in the clouds. Animals, lovely and savage, ran freely throu gh the brilliant grass, and softly rooling hills were freck- led with dazzling red, orange and purple flowers. The girl tried to drift into her world, tried to build it all around her so that she was in it. But she couldn ' t. The last thing she saw before she fell asleep was the cage she drew. Something, she knew, was in it. Excerpt from ' Doodles ' -Paisley Preston IVA 58 THE DREAM -Faye Boyce, IVB It is blue, A dark and eerie navy blue Mingled with a satanic black, black as peat. Winds gush through the winding ruins of the castle walls, Wailing like bag-pipes. Swishing dark black water around my waist. Hell ' s fire burns ahead of me. Red, orange and yellow, hungry, cold tongues of flame. Lapping the cold stone fortress. Blackness engulfs me, pulling me downwards. Then, my head and shoulders are pushed above, again. Again, bobbing and dipping, up and down continually. A face, my friend ' s, appears, red in Satan ' s glow. Her mouth opens, but The silent scream fades into the bitter night As the black water rushes into her mouth, into her lungs. Blackness, once more, engulfs me, rushing into my ears, Introducing itself loudly. Up again I ' m pushed. Then, He shows himself. My frozen limbs await, he draws nearer, I pray. Again I dip And the snappers of the crocodile Shut... On an old oak table The green candle sits Gathering dust Thinking of wax. The arrival of gypsies in our small town always made quite a sensation among the villagers. The brightly-coloured caravans, tinkling merrily with their metal cargo strapped to the sides, would come rolling through the town until they reached Birch Wood. Then we, the children, would come visiting to watch the dancing bears, talkings heads, jugglers and to have our fortunes told. Treasured coins saved from Chrlst- mases and birthdays went toward buying wooden dolls clothed in colourful dresses or wooden trains and boats. It must be said that our parents were far from unprejudiced. They believed strongly In the silly superstitions: that gypsies would steal well-off chil- dren and sell them for ransom, that they cheated you out of your money. As a result, we children could only visit the camp in large groups. Exerpt from ' The Gypsies ' - Victoria Mundell, MA LA RENCONTRE -Julie Ostopkevich, VB En le voyant assis tout seul, a cette table de cafe, j ' ai heslte longuement avant de decider quoi faire. Enfin je me suis approchee. RASPBERRY JAM -Sonia Hanson lA It was two A.M. And I couldn ' t sleep For there was Raspberry Jam Crawling on my feet. I think it had rotted For it turned Murky green And I had to fight it With my brother ' s Tonka machine I finally got the jam off With quite a struggle But it blew up into A great green bubble I then threw it outside And I went to sleep But the next morning Guess what I found on my feet! J ' etais prete... nous avons marche ensemble vers I ' ascenseur. 60 VIGIL -Carey Knight VA A trail of mourners wet and gray, Hooded, muted, glum. Fix their eyes on cold cement Then scan the horizon. FROM AN OLD WORKED GARDEN % ° ] ' to i 3- 3 if « o • a 1 1 OF HAPPY DAYS GONE BY TRAFALGAR SCHOOL DAYS IN THE seconds - just long bad mark in. LATIN - One of the dead languages, unduly troublesome owing to the fact that it has not been buried. UR SCHOOL was founded, in the words of Donald Ross, To qualify young persons for discharging in the best manner such duties as ordinarily devolve on the female sex . The phrasing may sound slightly ponderous today, but the goal is as sound today as It was seventy-five years ago, and Trafalgar still tries to teach us to live In the best manner possible. Women ' s Interests and duties have greatly broadened since Donald Ross said this, but it is equally important to discharge our new duties to the best of our ability. Up until the time we leave school, most of our decisions are made for us; then sudddenly we have to decide for ourselves the direction our lives will take, and It Is an Important and frightening step. The school Is trying to prepare us to do what is best, and to continue to do so. Of course no one can learn to do the right thing all the time; but If we try to recognize our responsibilities In life, and act accor- dingly, we will become adults In the true sense of the word. -Taken from 1963 yearbook. THE MORE THINGS CHANGE Early students remember When Trafalgar was founded, life in Montreal was completely different from what it is today. The surrounding land was almost country, with large estates with spacious grounds. There were no cars, and the girls were not allowed out on the streets wiUiout a chaperone. The school itself was an innovation and there were very few pupils. There was boarders ' walk, much the same as today, but with considerably fewer girls. In the first school magazine (1918) the first boarder to arrive in 1887 recalls going on walk, much the same as today, but with considerably fewer girls. In the first school magazine (1918) the first boarder to arrive 1887 recalls going on walks alone for a month accompanied only by a teacher, and living in the house in solitary splendour, waiting anxiously for the arrival of the second boarder. Also remembered were two daughters of a missionary in the Caribbean, who had only one coat between them, so that only one at a time could go out in the winter. After Miss Fairley ' s arrival, Scripture lessons were held every Sunday, with one girl reading a passage out of the Bible each week. Everyone wanted to choose the 117th psalm (two short verses) but no one quite dared. Short plays and concerts were put on by the girls in the coach-house, and they were much enjoyed, despite the frequent lack of audience. Early students remember many things, serious and funny, but their stron- gest memories are of Miss Fairley, and what she did for them and for the school. THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME When Donald Ross died in 1877, lie left the Trafal- gar property on Cote des Neiges hill to the Trafal- gar Institute. The Provisions of Mr. D. Ross ' will were such that it would be many years before the stipulated amount of money for the erection of the School could be realized. Fortunately, Lord Strathcona contributed a considerable sum. He insis- ted, though, that the school be built within the Mon- treal city limits. (Cote des Neiges was then so somew- here in the suburbs.) Chalderton Lodge on Simpson Street was acquired for $30,000. It had large lofty rooms which served as classes, dormitories and living rooms. The east wing, built in 1890, provided a music room and a dining room. Girls danced and painted in the for- mer coach house, which later became the boarding house. A modernish extension south ward on Simpson was erected in f 956 and inaugurated by the Rt. Hon. Vincent Massey. The two story Caverhill wing, with a new dining room and gymnasium, was built in 1973. The most recent addition has been the fourth floor, complete with auditorium. From catering to a dozen girls to housing 280, Trafalgar has come a long way. 89 ORIGIN OF THE G . BADGE he G badge was as highly-valued by Trafalgar students fifty years ago as it is today. A 1923 edition of Trafalgar Echoes lists the qualities required of those students awarded this highly- prized possession. The article states: Tra- falgarites would like to be on the Team; they would like to be Prefects and A girls. But most of all they would like to win the G badge. For one thing, the G badge combines everything. It j stands for ' esprit de corps ' — thait ' undefinable but most desirable of qualities... keeness, energy, good-fellowship, unselfish- ness fairness — all these count ever so much more than the ability to clear 4 feet, or to score goals. So the girl who wins the G badge may well be proud. RESOLUTIONS M.B.J.-.V. THE NIGHT BEFORE EXAMS M.B.J.-V. The clock strikes seven - I yawn and say, ■ Oh, many good things will I do today, I will get right up, though ' tis early still, And when I am dressed I will study until The breakfast bell rings, i will not be late. But start for school at a quarter past eight. Arriving there I ' ll be sure to see, That my shoes are put where they ought to be, I ' ll fill up the ink -wells with greatest of care When we go up for benches - of course I 11 be there! I ' ll not let my thoughts wander, nor at noon linger late But be out of the cloak-room - the clock strikes eight! I jump out of bed feeling very dismayed. And the harder I hurry the more I ' m, delayed, I rush through my breakfast and run down the street, Just missing my car by a couple of feet. After waiting for ages I see one at last, Though it ' s going at a pace which is surely not fast. I run up the hill for I know I am late. And breathless arrive at the Simpson Street gate. The class-room I reach at two minutes to nine, And quickly join in at the end of the line. And after that day it may safely be said That I don ' t make such plans til I get out of bed. •Twas the week of exams, and all through the school, There was not a word spoken nor broken a rule, Our pencils were sharpened and near by were laid. With ruler and compass to come to our aid. Both girls and the teachers had settled their mind, And all were prepared for a steady week ' s grind. All evening we studied till terribly late. Trying to find in our memories a name or a date, And then, quite tired out, to bed we would go, And dreams would arise that would cause us much woe, For Caesar and Shakespeare seemed quite to change plac And amo - to love - took the ablative case, And all the French verbs seemed joined into one, And the rays of the moon had more heat than the sun. Poor Chaucer was priest, and Joseph, the poet, And Spenser went blind, though the world didn ' t know it, The sides of triangles were less than the base. And parallel lines were enclosing a space. Charles I. fought at Hastings, and won it what ' s more, And Amiens ended the Seven Years ' War. And so it went on all, all through the night, And so it went on all, all through the night. And when we awoke we were shaking with fright But all were relieved, though real it did seem, To find after all it was only a dream. SIMPSON STREET HILL G.W. -Upper II. Simpson Street Hill has only one good point, which is, it is very nice to walk down. Otherwise it is the worst street in Montreal. When you are late, and go rushing and puffing up the hill, you feel you could knock it to the ends of the earth. If it only could be closed up like a telescope people ' s love for it would increase greatly. In the winter, when the sidewalk is de- cidedly icy, walking up the hill, every three steps you take forward, vou slip back two of them. In summer you are so hot, that by the time you reach the top of the hill, you have had a heated argu- ment and a quarrel with your best friend. There is not a word in the dictionary that would express the longness and the warmness, and the sllpperiness of Simpson Street Hill.
