urtmurd To the knights of King Arthur's court there came a vision of a Holy Grail. A vision and a challenge to their youth and sincerity. For this challenge they fully prepared themselves with the finest instruction and ecluipage obtainable. And when they were considered capable they were bid God Speed by the court sages and sent to ,join in the search for the Grail. A reflection on our college career, from matriculation to graduation, shows an irrefutable analogy between these medieval gallants in their aspiration for the Grail and ourselves as modern students in our aspiration for a successful future in education. As the knights of old made ready for their quest by fasting and prayers. we lit ourselves lor teaching through study and work. The court counselors instructed them with all scholarly knowledge at their disposal. And because the roads of England were unguarclecl and survival was certain only lor the most ht, the knights were drilled in the use of arms and were girded with the finest of armor. Our faculty have done their utmost to advise us of the latest trends in education and to teach us the subject matter which is invaluable to any teacher. fledgling or experienced. And because all schools are not ideal and all children are not paragons. we are sent student teaching and are helped to gain the necessary classroom techniques. The hnal supplement to the knights accoutrements and training was his sword and shield made of purest tempered steel and ornamented to suit his rank and personality. For ns the last touch to our period of preparation, our college years, is our commencement. On this day we receive the diploma which proves our worth to enter the teaching profession. lVhere these knights of the sixth century searched in vain lor the height of their ideal, the Holy Grail. we can perceive our vision of successful teaching as something near, yet not quite in reach. And as their maxim was the Latin, Excelsior-even higher-so ours must be, too.
