-. mn 1949 TOWER EUHUES EDWARD L. BILLER, IR Editor MILDRED LEVY Associate Editor NORVILE MCDCNALD Business Manager THE 49'ERS PRESENT THE TUWER EGHUES PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE TOWSON. MARYLAND 4 ft' Dru Hrnflcy Wlhen covered wagons rolled across the vast wilderness that was the United States in 1849, their occupants were greatly indebted to the friendly Indian guides who helped them find the way. The Class of Forty-Nine has likewise been fortunate to find, among the faculty of the State Teachers Col- lege. one man whose interest. understanding and guidance has been indispensable to us on our trip. It is doubtful whether we would have ever reached our goal had it not been for the presence of our advisor. Dr. YVi1liam H. Hartley. Certainly the trip without him would have been considerably less pleasant and fruitful. Our Doc is a man of unquestionable bril- liance. limitless Charm and unforgettable wit. To his role as advisor, instructor, supervisor and friend he brought a deep understanding of our tribula- tions, constructive solutions to our problems and an inspired sense of humor. For these reasons. and because we love him, we dedicate to Dr. XfVilliam H. Hartley this saga of our journey-a tale which without him could not have been written. Fi' XX'Il,1,l,XNI H. The steady increase in lreshman cmollmcnt has lilcewisc meant much. But the finest thing that has happenccl, anal can continue to happen, is the increasing realization by the stutlent hotly that college means more than merely attcntl- ing'classes. lt means participating in classes satislactorily ancl with increasing achieve- ment: it means taking part in the activities of the college: it means accepting responsibility lor the morale and achievements of the col- lege: it means developing as a person. socially. emotionally ancl spiritually, as well as intel- lectually: it means leaving the college as at mature, socially-conliclent inclivitlual, who is reacly to participate in the work of the world ancl contribute his services to the education of Nlllliyllllllls youth. Reflecting over four years, we realize proudly why a part ol us. individually and collectively, will remain here always. It is our hope that our deeds. our leadership, our pioneering will continue to inlluence those who are now here and those who are to come. In our Freshman year we originated a Glen Party which has been one of our yearly highlights ever since. XVQ were new in the college. yet we tried lirsts. and they proved to be big successes. By the next year we were really a part ol the student family. Our members were now leaders in many school organizations. The thrill ol' the year was Demonstration Night when we proudly accepted the plaque for vic- tory. In April we presented a very charming and original dance, the April Showers Dance. Once again we began a first -entertainment during intermission. Two outstanding events of the Junior Year were the XVooden Shoe Dance and once again victory on Demonstration Night. Now, all too soon. our years at State Teachers College have drawn to a close. The senior year has been an exciting one with stu- dent teaching, year book planning, May Day and graduation exercises filling every wonder! ful day! During the four inspiring years in these ivy covered buildings we have cotne to know and to love the rights for which the college stands, the ideals she tries to uphold. and the hopes she dreams of lor the future-the rights ol freedom and equality, the ideals ol honesty. truthfulness. and fairness. the hopes for peace and brotherhood. These have becotne so much a part ol! us that they will live with us vitally in our every endeavor. XVe have pioneered successlully. and the reward was well worth tlte ellort. Now that we have tnade our strike, we wish to express our apprecia- tion and thanks to all who have made it pos- l tains, and 1500 miles of country were in the Way. sible.
