We are a prep school, for we prepare for college, but TC is varied, for we extend to those who desire it a fine business course. We are a parish school, but we are more than that, for our student body represents thirty-four parishes. We are a coed school, aware of the realities of life, and prepared through our associations to meet them with intelligence and maturity. We are a Catholic School, too, and reverence our faith, our country, and its flag. โ pb Welcome to Mr. Lansinger, TCHS conductor. Freshmen need refreshments. A cherry bomb, for sure! A school is a love. It is a strong love imebdded in the hearts of its faculty and students. We are its voice that shouts its worth to the world; its cry at the games; its presence at a con- ference; its character at a social. A school is a door, too, through which we step into the world of maturity. Beyond that door stretch paths of trial, work, success . . . the test of life itself. Is TC preparing us for that test! Yes! . . . and the pages of this book will show you. โ pb f atn a wearer of saddles titacs . . . receiver of dreams T owson Catholic symbolizes ARCHBISHOP SHEHAN ' S dream for Catholic Youth When we seek great spiritual leader- ship in our archdiocese, confidently we look to His Excellency, Archbishop She- han who combines wise foresight with strong decisions in the important fields of Church and community relations. In his desire to promote the cause of Chris- tian unity. His Excellency has established a program that daily earns the respect of world leaders. As an educator, he is tire- less, dynamic. His tremendous education program is a source of pride to all. Truly, our good Shepherd gives us the incentive to become alert, informed Catholics, the kind that the Church needs today. โ SM The Most Reverend LAWRENCE J. Bishop Murphy, is beside him in their pro- gram of profound charity and selfless dedication to the welfare of the Catholics of the archdiocese. Closely connected with the hierarchy in the fields of education are Monsignor Donahue and Father Roman. With almost every issue of the Catholic Review, we read of important new steps being taken to improve, broaden, and vitalize instruc- tion in the Baltimore parochial schools. โ SM John Neumann has gone up into heaven, concludes Peggi Banner. Tom Bosley, Steve Sheeler, Marshall Kinsley, Gary Wolfsheimer, Dick Miller, Mark Kram, and Mike Gallagher approve as the dress rehearsal for the October assembly honoring the Beatification of Bishop Neumann ends satisfactorily. Bishop Neuman is the saintly founder of the Sisters of St. Francis who staff Towson Catholic and many schools and hospitals. ,C ?lN. , ' f The Right Reverend MONSIGNOR JOSEPH M. Not all students are aware of Monsignor ' s distinguished past as rector of the Basilica of the Assumption, vice- chancellor and chancellor of the diocese, recipient of community awards. Even now, despite engrossing duties, Monsignor also serves as National Chaplain of the Catholic Daughters of America. Mount St. Mary ' s College spoke well for us, when awarding Monsignor an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws: A large and varied store of knowledge he brings perfectly into focus . . . to serve the archdiocese, fellow priests, and his parishioners ... a priest beloved and respected. โ MC Father McMonus Father Rafferly II ' I 10 .โขrH. With Barbara Tassone and Stephen Dennis, she interviewed Professor W. Gordon Zeeveld of the University of Maryland who initiated TC ' s Shake- speare Festival by addressing the student body on the great Bard. Shakespeare ' s Four Hundredth Anni- versary was noted at TC by a school-wide program, taking as its theme Shakespeare ' s Understanding of Youth. Each class contributed a dramatic interpretation of his power to depict youth. 30 Worth it! Just admitted to the National Honor Society, these juniors have begun to see that hard work pays ofF. Pam Schettler lights the candle of service as Mary Karen Andrews, Lucille Flanagan, Clara Finnegan, Tom Wandishin, Tom Pey- ton, Ken Maskell, Henry Fiorini look on. Elaine Diggs, also a new member, was absent when the picture was taken. When TC has fun, well, it has fun! Seniors here are reacting to the Fall Variety Show (part of the immortal Fall Bake) probably when Warren Starkloff and his pals had the center of the stage. All at once, I k n o tv a little about WHY 31 TC IS THE STUDENT COUNCIL On Monday mornings, when the school vibrates with week-end anecdotes, the Stu- dent Council assembles to plan future TC events. Primarily, the Student Council is an important liasion between faculty and the students. With Sister Rita Gertrude ' s en- couragement, the Council (composed of four directing senior officers and the president, vice-president, and secretary of each home- room) strove for its current aims: 1 โ to deepen faith by recitation of the rosary; 2 โ to promote scholarship and personal integ- rity; 3 โ to foster a living school spirit. โ BD Sister Rifa Gertrude administers the pledge of office to Betsy Beck, Student Council President. Below, Father Rafferty congratulates President Betsy, Treasurer Barbara Tassone, Vice-President Rich Herbig, Secretary Rich Cramblitt, and urged students to cooperate effectively with their officers in all school projects. v Homeroom Officers are, foreground: Dolly Davis, Nicole Bourque, Susan Bauer. Knee ng.- Timothy Pac, Michael Johnson, Ray Burrows. Seated: Justine Price, Fran Brune, Joan Casey, Frances Haffner, Michele Clayton. Sfanding: Peggy Poffel, Mary Young, Gus Grason, Henry Fiorini, Joseph Dorsey, Jill McEvoy. After the Instailotion Ceremony on September 18, the Student Council functioned in a varied program. Members sponsored the successful an- nual dance, performed duties in individual homerooms, promoted the honor system, and this year participated actively in the newly formed Student Council Union of Baltimore. TC ' s Student Council is not a dis- ciplinary body but a significant link which plans, discusses, and acts upon its decisions for the betterment of the school. 33 Mine! At last! Can ' t you see these senior officers exulting as they match their rings with Dick Cramblitt ' s? L-r are Mary Ellen Finigan, Richard Herbig, President Betsy, Gary Wolf- shelmer, Bonnie Lambert, Richard Galster, and Barbara Dalina. This Is one of the lucky shots that sur- vived Jim Rettberg ' s disaster when a burglar stole his cameras, our films โ remember? We had planned that you would see us at the Ring Dance on Friday, November 1, when the Dellonaires played and we were quite posh. Fate stepped in in the form of a camera snatcher. Well, the 1964 Seniors are different, we all admit. 34 1 โ 1 โ 1- i 1 , L โข 1 1 The long-awaited moment has finally arrived. Austin Wallace watches seriously as Pat Toye receives her school ring from Monsignor. Richard Herbig assists. What dreams, triumphs, and happy memories may crystallize in a gleaming blue stone! Marilyn Cross ' joy is evident as she quietly admires her newest treasure during the assembly at which Monsignor graciously presided. Eight steps up was a tense climb. Then, a smile. Congratulations, a warm handshake, a small white package. Then, through a golden arc topped by a simulated blue stone. A door swung closed. The arc was a door . . . one yet many, and as one door closes another must open. So here. Eight steps down, but unnoticed. The auditorium seat squeaked as it un- folded, was filled. At last โ a snap of the staple, the crinkle of paper and then โ for a secondโ just a fraction of a minute โ everything halted. The past, ho! the present stood still . . . the future stretched ahead. There gleamed a royal stone set in a gold bank engraved with symbols . . . a year, a challenge, a pledge. Yet the ring was a symbol in itself โ the CLASS of 1964โ The night of the Ring Dance would be filled with special moments โ danc- ing to a favorite soft melody, beneath the ring, before the grotto; a whisper private between two; a joke shared by all; the March . . . But nothing would recapture that split second of realization . . . Sister asks these seniors busy finding material for their papers for history and English classes. Lew Kaufman, Betty Crom- well, Oona Byron, Peggy Judge, Tom Hiser, Ed Widerman, Cindy Supik, and Ronald Gonseski have learned that there is much more to library facilities than the card catalogue. Pyramus and Thisbe? Of course, as only Jane Anderson and Steve Sheeler know, demonstrating for this Latin IV class where Kathie Franz, Anita Smith, Judy Herrling, Mary Vaefh, and Sister Theodore may also be seen. Often termed a dead language, Latin may be the key to other tongues and to literary allusions. In TC ' s four-year program, Latinists acquire essential skills, learn of the gods and goddesses, follow Caesar ' s conquests, watch the Cicero-Cataline debates, and trace the steps of the glorious Aeneas. This year, the object of the Latin Club was to study the Roman and Greek myths. 38 Studying is humility, arrogance, patience, push . . . Je pense que . . . Carol is also president of TC ' s chap- ter of the National French Honor Society and has been active in the aims of the organization. French, once the language of diplomats, completes TC ' s language program. In addition to the fundamentals of grammar, translation, pronunciation, qualified students plunge into the waters of French history, civilization, government. Third year pupils read Dumas, Moliere, Victor Hugo, en francais, of course. The important goal of I. rench Department is to achieve swift conversational French thtougn good oral expression. โ BD 39 TC CLUBS Seeing , being , joining . . . open many doors Doors open to many different experiences as those who belong to one or more of the TC clubs can tell. Room 300 admits CSMC and Sodalist members who are interested in promoting Catholic Action. This year, the CSMC aided the missions by donations, stamps, prayers โ even adopted a Korean orphan. The Sodality collaborated with the Student Council in collecting toys and clothes for the poor. Room 100 opened its doors to the Josephenum Club whose special object is to pray for vocations, especially through a weekly holy hour. The success of assemblies depends on Jim Owings, Tim Whitley and Jim Cos- grove, experts in manning lights, shifting property and making mikes work. As for- wards break, guards rebound, and whistles blow, the season appears in full swing. But the color and action of the games do not tell the whole story. Valuable hours of practice, trial and error are woven into a good team. With techniques learned and plays to be experimented with. Varsity and Jayvee respond eagerly to Mr. Karseras ' s excellent coaching. A typical practice begins with drills. The five-man weave develops efficient ball handling and coordination. The figure eight improves passing and shooting. Other drills stress guarding. A good player himself, Mr. K points out defenses, strives to make the simplest moves accurate. Improvement grows. Outside shots and jump shots become skilled. Under strong direction, the Owlettes hoped to defeat teams with more experience. Sometimes they did. Next year they will. โ F.M. Gary (Aladdin) and his good friends, the pixies, plot more and more confusion. Everywhere there is activity: in the music room, behind the stage, in the art room โ all throughout TC. Even ordinarily quiet places come alive in the preparation of another operetta. The buzzing of the saw in the wings, the har- mony of the glee club on stage, the tension of the leads practicing, oh, anywhere โ all this is part of the wonderful atmosphere which makes TC spirit and enthusiasm burst forth as each student willingly does his share to make another success. This year, under the capable direction of Mr. Spiros Karseras and Mr. Lester Wolf, TC presented an original score highlighting music from recent Broadway shows and former TC operettas. โ B.D. 80 True love never did run smooth, as Pat (Gypsy), Skip (Prince Franz), Rick (Billy), and Barb (Kathie) are discovering in this moment when stars are crossed. T D little pixies (Maddie and Janice) are all alremble for fear Judy (Madame Fortissimo Sole) will discourage their wonder- ful Aladdin. Meanwhile, Vince (Madame ' s nervous husband) searches his pocket for some place to hide. OpereMo Time, 1964! It was a quiet afternoon, the silence broken only by amused chuckles filtering from Room 302. What was up. The idea of TC ' s first senior play. That reading of The Barretts of Wimpole Street led seniors to request a school performance. The green-light was given by Sister Jeanette Clare with the challenge for a purely senior project.
